How Braniff Went Bust: The Collapse Of The Fastest-Growing Airline In America
The very simplified story of Braniff International Airways' downfall. There are MANY factors involved in Braniff's fall from grace. This video focuses on a few points relevant to the big picture (including American Airline's sabotage)
Braniff Airways was first launched around 1926 by Paul Braniff. After a few retries, the airline became profitable and begun expanding. Throughout the 30's and into the 70's, Braniff became the fastest growing airline in the country. Prior to Airline Deregulation, they were well known for their exceptional onboard service and their route network.
Once deregulation was enacted, Harding Lawrence, the president of Braniff, decided to respond to deregulation by rapidly expanding Braniff's influence. While the expansion was initially successful, unpredicted comp...

Once deregulation was enacted, Harding Lawrence, the president of Braniff, decided to respond to deregulation by rapidly expanding Braniff's influence. While the expansion was initially successful, unpredicted competition from other airlines, increased fuel costs, and economic unrest caused Braniff to lose millions.
The company went through a few changes in management, but many factors including pilot strikes, few passengers, declining value of service, and many others lead the airline to cease operations in 1982.

Hello all! :D
Today, we'll be talking about another airline of the past, this time Braniff International, a carrier which traced its roots back to the infancy of air travel, and throughout its lengthy existence was restarted six separate times for various reasons.
Special thanks to Jessica Martin of Braniff International for getting in touch and providing me with additional information relating to both this documentary and regarding the collapse of Braniff International Airways during May 1982.
For clarification, she has confirmed that the footage of Braniff airliners for the first 24 seconds of the video, as well as interspersed throughout the documentary, is Copyright, Braniff Airways, Incorporated, 1926 2022, therefore, the title of 'Unknown' should be considered obsolete.
For information regarding the collapse of Braniff during 1982, she has stated the following to provide an insider view of the final days of the company and its current status:
"There have been many rumors surrounding the cessation of air operations (only air operations ceased, all other subsidiaries and certain departments continued in operation to this day) and one of them is the belief that Mr. Putnam decided to close down the company because of his inability to receive a court injunction concerning a pilot strike. Rest assured that our pilots were not planning to strike and the only possible reason that this rumor may have occurred was because of a possible strike of Pan Am pilots. We were in discussions with both Pan American, Eastern and American concurring the transfer or our Latin America Division.
In a letter to creditors, dated May 17, 1982, Mr. Putnam detailed the exact dates and times of the cessation of air operations complete with explanations and reasons. None of the reasons had anything to do with a pilot strike or any other reason other than certain funds that we were counting on had not arrived and the Load Factor had dropped strangely and without reason down to only 29 percent during the last two weeks of operation. Rumors had begun swirling that we were shutting down as early at May 1, 1982, and those have since been traced back to a competitor."
Once again, I would like to thank Jessica Martin for getting in touch with me, and her additional information relating to the carrier is both enlightening and greatly appreciated.

Paul R. Braniff, Inc.
On April 26, 1926, Paul Revere Braniff incorporated Braniff Air Lines, Inc., with the Oklahoma Secretary of State but it was not used for airline operations and was eventually dissolved. On May 29, 1928, insurance magnate Thomas Elmer Braniff financed and founded an aviation company with his brother Paul, called Paul R. Braniff, Inc., doing business as Tulsa-Oklahoma City Airline. On June 20, 1928, service began from Oklahoma City to Tulsa using a single-engine 5 passenger Stinson Detroiter registered as NC1929 on June 20, 1928. Paul Braniff acted as pilot of the first flight with one passenger on board. The flight operated normally to Tulsa but was delayed for the return trip by thunderstorms in the Tulsa area.
The Braniff brothers remained a part of the company as the ownership was transferred to Universal Aviation Corporation in April 1929. With the purchase of the company by Universal, the entity began operating as Braniff Air Lines, Inc. Universal was a conglomerate of smaller airlines and railways that planned a southern US coast-to-coast air and rail service. In early 1930, the company was purchased by the Aviation Corporation holding company, which other holdings included the predecessors of American Airlines.

In the world of Air Crash Investigation, some of the most crucial pieces of evidence can be found inside an airplane’s flight recorders. Having a recording from on board an aircraft ready to be retrieved to tell the events of an ill-fated flight is invaluable to any investigation. They can tell some remarkable things, and sometimes investigators can get a whole lot more than they bargained for. We’ll be talking about one such case today.
When you think of the term Flight Recorder, two different objects may come to mind. There’s the Flight Data Recorder which records various parameters and technical data about a flight, and then there is the Cockpit Voice Recorder, which does exactly what it sounds like. One or more microphones positioned in the flight deck recording the conversations of the pilots.
Together these two items, though they are known colloquially as “Black Boxes” they are typically coated in bright orange. Done so to stand out amongst plane wreckage or at the bottom of the sea. As you’d expect therefore, given the sensitive nature of the voice recorder’s content, these aren’t always released to the public unlike say accident reports or photographs.
Sometimes they are for various reasons if it is in the public interest, some countries have been known to release these recording more liberally than others. In other cases the recordings themselves are withheld but they are transcribed.
Today though we are going to look into the case of Braniff International Airways Flight 352. This is a rather rare case of an air accident. Where though the disaster took place 55-years-ago and for almost all of that time the cockpit voice recording was kept from the public, just two months ago at time of recording this video, it surfaced. Though the recording was withheld, I’d say having looked into it, I’d describe it more as lost.
In remarkable circumstances it was only re-discovered recently and publicly released. And there is a story there, which we’ll get to later. This is one of the oldest Cockpit Voice Recordings to ever surface from a crash. The recording sheds further light into that flight deck of 55-years-ago.
What we are about to unearth and breakdown here today, are the events leading up to a fatal catastrophe that could so easily have been avoided and with the help of this recording, we’ll piece together why.
