The McDonnell Douglas DC-9 (initially known as the Douglas DC-9) is a twin-engine, single-aislejet airliner. It was first manufactured in 1965 with its maiden flight later that year. The DC-9 was designed for frequent, short flights. The final DC-9 was delivered in October 1982.
The DC-9-based airliners, MD-80, MD-90 and Boeing 717 later followed in production. With the final deliveries of the 717 in 2006, production of the DC-9/MD-80/90/717 aircraft family ceased after 41 years and over 2,400 units built.
Design and development
Origins
During the 1950s Douglas Aircraft studied a short- to medium-range airliner to complement their higher capacity, long range DC-8. (DC stands for Douglas Commercial.) A medium-range four-engine Model 2067 was studied but it did not receive enough interest from airlines and it was abandoned. In 1960, Douglas signed a two-year contract with Sud Aviation for technical cooperation. Douglas would market and support the Sud Aviation Caravelle and produce a licensed version if airlines ordered large numbers. None were ordered and Douglas returned to its design studies after the cooperation deal expired.

Greetings! :D
In this two part series, we'll be looking at an airliner so successful that it nearly bankrupted its parent firm, the Douglas DC-9, having crawled its way from a proposed model with no commercial interest at the beginning of the 1960s, becoming one of the most popular short to medium range airliner models by the end of the same decade, having fought off the BAC 1-11 and even given Boeing a run for their money, and from its phenomenal rise would spawn its own successive generations of twinjets that would see work into the 1980s and 90s.

The aircraft came t a rest 5,634 feet past the runway threshold of runway 22 at Edwards Air Force Base, California, US. Seven crew members were aboard, one of whom, a flight test engineer broke his ankle in the landing. The probably cuase of the accident was determined as "the pilot's failure to stabilise the approach as prescribed by the manufactures flight test procedures"

Farewell: Revolutionary DC-9 Takes Final Flight
Jan. 6 (Bloomberg) -- A long era in U.S. aviation is ending. The last Douglas Aircraft DC-9 airplane in the U.S. commercial fleet makes its final journey Monday. The DC-9 was a revolution when it was unveiled -- fast, comfortable and functional -- and one of the first commercial jets able to take off and land on short runways. Greetings!

This aircraft was undertaking a flight test for certification to determine the horizontal distance required to land and bring the aircraft to a full stop. The aircraft touched down about 2,298 feet past the runway threshold the descent rate at touch down exceeded the aircraft structural limitations and the empennage seperated.

The Douglas DC-9 is a twin-engine narrow-body jet airliner created by Douglas Aircraft in the early 1960s. It was produced from 1965 till 1982 and became one of the most popular regional jet airliner in the world. In addition, it became the basis of the aircraft family: MD-80, MD-90 and Boeing-717, which were actively produced and operated until the beginning of the 21st century.

It may be retiring but the DC-9 leaves behind a legacy. Bloomberg's Matt Miller reports. (Source: Bloomberg)
does not include the md80 series, nor the 717
does not included ground casulties (although i do mention them)
rip to everyone who died in these crashes
