The Bowery Mission is a rescue mission and men's shelter located at 227 Bowery between Rivington and Stanton Streets in the Bowery neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It provides food, medical services and employment assistance to the working poor and homeless men women and children. At night The Bowery Mission opens its chapel to serve as a emergency shelter for homeless men. In addition to these services, The Bowery Mission offers a long-term (6-12 month) residential program based on Christian Discipleship, providing homeless men the opportunity to rejoin society as working, contributing members.
History
The Bowery Mission was founded in 1879 by the Reverend Albert Gleason Ruliffson and his wife. It was the third rescue mission established in the United States, and the second in New York City. The Mission is currently administered by The Christian Herald Association.
In 1895 the Mission was bought by Dr. Louis Klopsch, owner of the The Christian Herald, to save it from economic distress; he also bought the building it was in, which up to that time had been leased. Klopsch became the president, and the Mission was formally incorporated in 1897. One prominent board member was Sarah J. Bird, a philanthropist who was known as "the Mother of the Bowery Mission" due to her long-time service to the organization from 1881 to 1914. Supervision of the Mission went to John Greener Hallimond, originally from England, who introduced many innovative services, such as a home for women in Brooklyn, an employment agency and a breadline, which began in 1902. With money left over from a food drive, Klopsch created a "Fresh Air Home" in Nyack, New York to get inner-city children into the countryside during the summer.
In the 17th century, the road branched off Broadway north of Fort Amsterdam at the tip of Manhattan to the homestead of Peter Stuyvesant, Director-General of New Netherland. The street was known as Bowery Lane prior to 1807. "Bowery" is an anglicization of the Dutch bouwerij, derived from an antiquated Dutch word for "farm", as in the 17th century the area contained many large farms.
Construction of this underground station began in August 1907 and was almost completed by the end of 1910. However, the BMT Nassau Street Line to the south did not open until August 4, 1913 when Chambers Street was ready for service.
This station was originally configured like a typical express station with two island platforms and four tracks; express service ran on the inner tracks and local service on the outer tracks. When it was built, the station was an important connection point for elevated and streetcar lines. With those lines long gone, a four-track station was no longer considered necessary. A renovation of the Nassau Street Line, completed in October 2004, resulted in the former northbound platform being sealed off with service in both directions now provided on the former southbound platform, so that northbound trains now use the former southbound express track. On the abandoned side, only the outer track remains.
The 1956 docudrama ON THE BOWERY is about as raw as you can get in its examination of New York City's infamous neighborhood the Bowery. Produced and directed by first time film maker Lionel Rogosin, On The Bowery pulls no punches in showing viewers this world populated by men on the edge of society.
Featuring real life Bowery residents Ray Salyer and Gorman Hendricks, this is a true life look at three days and nights in the life of the men who populate the Bowery.
On The Bowery strips away all the usual ideas we have of the 1950s, and gets down to the gritty truth of life.
Here are two other videos that cover other aspects of life in 1950s New York City.

Walking NYC: The Bowery (March 31, 2021)
I walk the entirety of the Bowery from Cooper Square to Chatham Square. The Bowery is a historical street that spans three neighborhoods from the East Village, Lower East Side, and Chinatown. It was a major road for all the farms in the area, but now is home to many boutique shops, restaurants, restaurant supply stores, and cultural institutions.

Note:
-Here we have a ride clip (via B car Kawasaki R160) passing the unused Canal Street / Bowery Platform (NOT the platforms that is used today, which is still open for all) on BMT Nassau Street Line. The platform was closed down somewhere between 2001-2004, and the current ones are used. The line has 4 tracks between Chambers Street and Bowery, which then becomes 3 at Essex St, 2 over the bridge and etc. I believe all were used at some point (4 tracks between Chambers and Bowery), of course back then (J)/(Z) would use to skip Bowery, while the brown (M) [Now orange 6th Ave (M)] would serve all stops in the 90s. Now its all 2 tracks used.

-As you can see, the station lights are still on, and tags are shown while passing.
-This clip was taken due to a General Order detour track work along the northbound (southbound Express track). Queens bound trains were rerouted via the unused Northbound track towards the right of the line. the Northbound Express track shown while passing, has no rails.
Clip is dark in the tunnel, please excuse this!
Anyways... Enjoy =)!

Bowery is an up-close and personal look into the lives of New Yorkers living on the streets of the Bowery - following their struggles with homelessness, drug addiction, harsh weather, job hunting, and eventually COVID-19 and the BLM Protests.
"Exuding empathy and understanding, the filmmakers generate a trust with their subjects rarely seen, displaying a refreshing frankness and compassion that leaves a lasting impression."
—Judd Taylor, Tribeca Film Festival

I walk the entirety of the Bowery from Cooper Square to Chatham Square. The Bowery is a historical street that spans three neighborhoods from the East Village, Lower East Side, and Chinatown. It was a major road for all the farms in the area, but now is home to many boutique shops, restaurants, restaurant supply stores, and cultural institutions.

Anyone who has seen The Matrix knows that Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne work together quite well, so many fans were quite happy to see Fishburne pop up in the second film of the John Wick franchise. Fishburne plays a mysterious character known only as the Bowery King, and like pretty much everyone in the Wick franchise, there is more to this character than meets the eye. Like the actors who portray them, John Wick and the Bowery King go way back, so let’s take a look at the untold truth of the Bowery King from the John Wick franchise.
