Bosra (Arabic:بصرىBuṣrā, also spelled Bostra, Busrana, Bozrah, Bozra and officially known Busra al-Shamبصرى الشام) is a town in southern Syria, administratively belonging to the Daraa District of the Daraa Governorate.
According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Bosra had a population of 19,683 in the 2004 census. It is the administrative center of the nahiyah ("subdistrict") of Bosra which consisted of nine localities with a collective population of 33,839 in 2004. Bosra's inhabitants are predominantly Sunni Muslims, although the town has a small Shia Muslim community.
Bosra has an ancient history and during the Roman era it was a prosperous provincial capital and Metropolitan Archbishopric, which became a Latin Catholic titular see and the episcopal see of a Melkite Archeparchy. It continued to be administratively important during the Islamic era, but became gradually less prominent during the Ottoman era. Today, it is a major archaeological site and has been declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Bosra Festival Syria Orient Culemborg The Netherlands
Our folkdance group from Culemborg The Netherlands was invited by the Syrian Ministry of Culture to participate in the 21th International Festival in Bosra Syria august 2009.
We performed in the Bosra Amfitheater for over 15.000 spectators. Later that evening the famous Ali al Deek performed and invited the group to dance with him on stage again. It was an amazing happening.
During this week we performed in Suweida, Tartous and the wonderful historic Azem Palace in Damascus.
In between the performances the organisation showed us several interesting sites elsewhere in Syria.
The video shows part of the performances in Bosra and in Damascus.

The Roman Theatre Of Bosra Syria
The theatre was originally built outside the walls of the town, but was later completely enclosed by an Ayyūbid fortress. The city of Bosra had its fortifications expanded between 481 and 1251. When later integrated into the fortifications, its role was to serve as a citadel and to guard a road leading to Damascus.

Today the ancient metropolis has a population of around a thousand and they earn their living from tourism, agriculture and livestock. Its unique combination of numerous historic and cultural epochs continues to make this Syrian city a most worthwhile and fascinating destination.
