Bosra (Arabic:بصرىBuṣrā, also spelled Bostra, Busrana, Bozrah, Bozra and officially known Busra al-Shamبصرى الشام) is a town in southern Syria, administratively belonging to the Daraa District of the Daraa Governorate.
According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Bosra had a population of 19,683 in the 2004 census. It is the administrative center of the nahiyah ("subdistrict") of Bosra which consisted of nine localities with a collective population of 33,839 in 2004. Bosra's inhabitants are predominantly Sunni Muslims, although the town has a small Shia Muslim community.
Bosra has an ancient history and during the Roman era it was a prosperous provincial capital and Metropolitan Archbishopric, which became a Latin Catholic titular see and the episcopal see of a Melkite Archeparchy. It continued to be administratively important during the Islamic era, but became gradually less prominent during the Ottoman era. Today, it is a major archaeological site and has been declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Bosra Festival Syria Orient Culemborg The Netherlands
Our folkdance group from Culemborg The Netherlands was invited by the Syrian Ministry of Culture to participate in the 21th International Festival in Bosra Syria august 2009.
We performed in the Bosra Amfitheater for over 15.000 spectators. Later that evening the famous Ali al Deek performed and invited the group to dance with him on stage again. It was an amazing happening.
During this week we performed in Suweida, Tartous and the wonderful historic Azem Palace in Damascus.
In between the performances the organisation showed us several interesting sites elsewhere in Syria.
The video shows part of the performances in Bosra and in Damascus.

The Roman Theatre Of Bosra Syria
The theatre was originally built outside the walls of the town, but was later completely enclosed by an Ayyūbid fortress. The city of Bosra had its fortifications expanded between 481 and 1251. When later integrated into the fortifications, its role was to serve as a citadel and to guard a road leading to Damascus.

Popular around the world, the talented Fujii Kaze is a Japanese singer and pianist known for his sultry R&B grooves and catchy songwriting. His adventurous spirit was strong as he settled into the Tiny Desk way — a concert that's intimate, mostly acoustic and recorded without reverb, effects, in-ear monitors or wedges. During the rehearsal, the band quickly acclimated to the environment and adjusted instrument volumes to hear each other better. The end result was a beautiful 30 minute set, captured without pause and with no stops, restarts or retakes.
This video is part of the second international version of Tiny Desk, a joint venture between NPR and The Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) — the sole public media organization in Japan that is operated with the purpose of providing the latest news, education and culture both domestically and internationally. This new series will spotlight emerging and established Japanese artists with the same engaged performances, look and feel of the original Tiny Desk Concerts series.

In the corner of a busy office at the NHK Broadcasting Center in Shibuya, Tokyo, a staffer rearranged books, vinyl records and tchotchkes on a bright red shelving unit. The production crew double-checked equipment settings and made small adjustments to the lighting. Another worker added a few more posters to the tall white file cabinets. Cameras were set and microphones were ready because Fujii Kaze and his band had just rehearsed the night before. Everyone in the room — including a few of us from NPR that were there to help — was eager and excited because the very first performance for Tiny Desk Concerts JAPAN was about to start.

In this vlog, I visit the ancient city of Bosra Al Sham in southern Syria's Dara'a governate. We explore the Roman amphitheatre, as well as later Ayyubid ruins. I also discuss the political situation and the affects of the Syrian war. The entire video was recorded in January 2020, including places visited on my Syria tour.

Travel video about destination Bosra in Syria.
Around a hundred and fifty kilometres south of the Syrian capital of Damascus, and located amid the fertile Nuqra Plains, lie the ruins of Bosra. The rural atmosphere of the surrounding landscape can also be felt within the ancient city as sheep and goats graze between the ruins that back to various epochs. The Bahira Basilica is a legendary place. According to legend it was here that the monk, Sergius, introduced the Prophet Mohammed to Christianity and described to him his divine mission. Both architectural and historical examples of the Roman Empire, such as the Southern Thermes, still cover large areas of the ancient city. The well-preserved remains of Bosra’s second century Well House, the Nymphäum, still provides a good insight into the fine setting given to it by the Romans. A nine hundred metre long street was once the main axis of the city that, at its zenith, had around eighty thousand inhabitants. Today the ancient metropolis has a population of around a thousand and they earn their living from tourism, agriculture and livestock. Its unique combination of numerous historic and cultural epochs continues to make this Syrian city a most worthwhile and fascinating destination.
