The Blackwater's sandy bottom, white beaches and large sandbars contrast with the dark tannic water that gives the river its name. "Blackwater" is a translation of the Choctaw word oka-lusa, which means "water black".
31 miles (50km) of the river are navigable by canoe, kayak or small boats. This section of the river, from Kennedy Bridge near Munson, Florida to Deaton Bridge in the Blackwater River State Park, is designated a Florida Canoe Trail — part of a statewide system of greenways and trails.
The river's average flow rate is 2 to 3 miles per hour (3.2 to 4.8km/h), with an average depth of 2.5 feet (0.76m). Depending on rainfall, water levels can fluctuate rapidly and low-lying areas are seasonally flooded by the river. This floodplain supports a wide variety of flora and fauna.
A blackwater river is a type of a river with a deep, slow-moving channel flowing through forested swamps or wetlands. As vegetation decays, tannins leach into the water, making a transparent, acidic water that is darkly stained, resembling tea or black coffee. Most major blackwater rivers are in the Amazon Basin and the Southern United States. The term is used in fluvial studies, geology, geography, ecology, and biology. Not all dark rivers are blackwater in that technical sense. Some rivers in temperate regions, which drain or flow through areas of dark black loam, are simply black due to the color of the soil; these rivers are black mud rivers. There are also black mud estuaries.
Blackwater rivers are lower in nutrients than whitewater rivers and have ionic concentrations higher than rainwater. The unique conditions lead to flora and fauna that differ both from whitewater and clearwater rivers. Where the water types combine is attractive to a diverse group of organisms. The classification of Amazonian rivers into black, clear and whitewater was first proposed by Alfred Russel Wallace in 1853.
The Blackwater River or Kerry Blackwater is a river in County Kerry, southwestern Ireland. It is not to be confused with the much longer Munster Blackwater, which also rises in County Kerry.
A Special Area of Conservation, protects most of the basin of the Blackwater River. This is one of the areas in which the rare Kerry Slug is known to occur.
Florida (officially Florida Este) is a mostly residential barrio of the Vicente López Partido in the northern suburbs of Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is principally a middle-class neighbourhood and is located between the barrios of Olivos and Vicente López, also in the same partido (department).
Location
The city is located between The Autopista Pascual Palazzo (mostly known as "Panamericana" or "Acceso Norte") highway and the Maipú Avenue. The Acceso Norte splits the district into two neighborhoods: Florida Este (from Panamericana to Maipú Avenue) and Florida Oeste (from Panamericana to De los Constituyentes Avenue).
Florida is served by the Mitre Line, which provides easy access to the city of Buenos Aires. Due to the railway lines, Este and Oeste neighborhoods are also called "Florida Mitre" or "Florida Belgrano". Its main commercial area is centered on General San Martín avenue.
History
Florida was founded in 1891 when the Buenos Aires and Rosario Railway opened a station in the section from Belgrano that then reached Bartolomé Mitre, Borges and San Isidro. Some versions state that the station (and subsequently the village) was named "Florida" to commemorate a victory over Spanish army in the Paraje La Florida of Alto Perú on May 25, 1814, during the War of Independence.
Florida was founded first as a barrio of Barceloneta in 1881 when a priest, Father Carrión, the mayor of Barceloneta, and other dignitaries arrived at a terrain of almost 4 acres. They decided to establish a new barrio and the owner of the place, Don Manuel Cintrón granted the land while he retained a piece of it. The barrio was first called "Florida Adentro".
During the 20th century, several efforts were made to declare Florida as a municipality. First, on April 14, 1949, House Representative Francisco Díaz Marchand presented a project to create a legislative commission that would study the economic and social conditions of the barrio, to determine the suitability of it as an independent municipality. The project was unsuccessful. On 1960, Manuel Frías Morales presented a law that would permit the study to establish the municipality but it didn't succeed either.

Tubing in Florida's CLEAREST RIVER waters | OUTDOOR ADVENTURE in BLACKWATER STATE PARK
#hiddenoakshomestead #outdoors #florida
Wherever you go in Florida, you're never more than 60 miles from the beach. Sand beaches, a Florida signature, account for 1,100 miles (1,770 km) of the state's 1,800 miles (2,898 km) of coastline. Florida has more than 8,460 miles (13,620 km) of tidal shoreline, second only to Alaska in that category. But Florida is more than beach!
We take a break from the farm and drive down the road to have some river family fun. Big Coldwater Creek is a major tributary of the Blackwater River, originating in Conecuh National Forest in Georgia before covering 28 miles and joining the Blackwater, which holds the distinction as the only remaining pristine sand river in the United States.

We're a small family farm in the Florida Panhandle. After relocating back home from the Middle East we wanted to build up the most self- sufficient lifestyle possible with our kids, in order to grow as much of our own food as possible. Through raising livestock, tending to a garden, preserving food through canning and fermenting, learning about local fauna for medicinals and wild edibles, we are hoping to encourage others to do as much as possible for themselves through re-learning some of the forgotten "old" skills.

The water is clear and tea colored, stained by the tannins from the surrounding forest, and the river is the only pristine pure sand bottomed river in the US, and one of the last in the world! Sandbars on nearly every bend provide plenty of opportunity to stop and rest, eat, play, fish or camp!
I'm going to build a directory of different launches and landings in the Covington County/South Alabama area to help enable locals who might've never tried a particular landing or lake, or out-of-towners who might want to come around and try them. If you have any questions about a featured spot, or suggestions on how to improve the series, by all means, fire away!

7 mile float down the Blackwater River in Florida. We were in a double hard shell kayak and an inflatable paddle board. Would not recommend an inflatable as there were many spots that could have punctured the paddle board. Big sandy beaches. We did have to portage a large wood pile Water was cool.

The Blackwater River in north Florida near Pensacola is one of the purest sand bottom rivers in the country. Almost every bend in the river has a large pure white sand bank. The Blackwater River IS a blackwater river. A blackwater river is a river where the decaying vegetation leaches tannins into the water, creating a transparent water that is darkly stained. The water is very clear and pure, just stained. Blackwater rivers are lower in nutrients than whitewater rivers which leads to flora and fauna that differs from both whitewater and clearwater rivers. The Blackwater River is the largest contiguous longleaf pine/wiregrass ecosystem in the world.

The Blackwater River rises in southern Alabama, near the Covington/Escambia County line, and flows 56.6 miles south and west to the Gulf of Mexico. 31 miles of it is deemed navigable, and is part of Florida's Designated Paddling Trails. The water is clear and tea colored, stained by the tannins from the surrounding forest, and the river is the only pristine pure sand bottomed river in the US, and one of the last in the world! Sandbars on nearly every bend provide plenty of opportunity to stop and rest, eat, play, fish or camp!
