Blackpool South is a constituency in Lancashire, represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 1997 by Gordon Marsden of the Labour Party.

History

This seat was created for the 1945 Election. This marginal constituency has been represented by both the Conservative and Labour Party parties since the Second World War. It was held by the Conservatives until 1997 when the current MP Gordon Marsden gained it for Labour.

Constituency profile

The seat encompasses the central and southern parts of Blackpool, including the famous Tower, the three piers and the Pleasure Beach. Also included is the suburb of Layton to the east and the Bloomfield area, home to Blackpool F.C. In the southern end of the seat, near to the Fylde border, Squires Gate is the site of Blackpool Airport.

Tourism is a major industry in the area, and while Blackpool has been less affected by the decline in domestic holidaymaking than some resorts, there are nonetheless some run-down areas which were once rather more glamorous. Traditionally seaside seats were very safe for the Conservatives, but these days the party would need an overall majority on a uniform swing to stand any chance of winning it back.

Blackpool

Blackpool ⁱ/ˈblækpuːl/ is a seaside resort in Lancashire, England, on England's northwest coast. The town is on the Irish Sea, between the Ribble and Wyre estuaries, 17.5 miles (28.2 km) northwest of Preston, 27 miles (43 km) north of Liverpool, 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Bolton and 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Manchester. It had an estimated population of 142,065 at the 2011 Census.

Throughout the Middle Ages and Early Modern period, Blackpool was a coastal hamlet in Lancashire's Hundred of Amounderness, and remained such until the mid-18th century when it became fashionable in England to travel to the coast in the summer to bathe in sea water to improve well-being. In 1781, visitors attracted to Blackpool's 7-mile (11 km) sandy beach were able to use a new private road, built by Thomas Clifton and Sir Henry Hoghton. Stagecoaches began running to Blackpool from Manchester in the same year, and from Halifax in 1782. In the early 19th century, Henry Banks and his son-in-law John Cocker erected new buildings in Blackpool such that its population grew from less than 500 in 1801 to over 2,500 in 1851. St John's Church in Blackpool was consecrated in 1821.

Blackpool (TV serial)

Blackpool is a British television musical comedy drama serial, produced in-house by the BBC. It was screened on BBC One as six one-hour episodes on Thursday nights at 9pm from 11 November to 16 December 2004. When retransmitted by BBC America in 2005, it was renamed Viva Blackpool, and went on to win a Peabody Award for BBC Worldwide, the commercial overseas distribution subsidiary of the BBC. A sequel in the form of a TV movie was produced by the BBC, also called Viva Blackpool in the UK (2006).

Plot

The plot concerns the murder of a young man in a Blackpool arcade, and how it affects the people involved in the arcade and the investigation:

Ripley Holden (David Morrissey), the ambitious, arrogant arcade owner who believes strongly in luck, and who is planning to turn his arcade into a Las Vegas-style casino hotel and thus revive Blackpool's fortunes;

  Join Theo and myself as we check out the rides and attractions of South Pier Blackpool in 2023. Based in the South of Blackpool Promenade, South pier is 1 of 3 piers in Blackpool and 1 of 2 that offer a fun fair. Rides are priced individually but token bungles are available. We did 30 tokens for £30 in this vlog, and rides vary from 2 tokens to 4. South Pier is open every day. Rides are weather permitting and closing time varies on weather and public activity but can be open as late at 10pm. There are 2 arcades, game stalls, cafes, shops, toilets and a family bar. In this vlog we show you the whole site and take you on rides too. Please note we use specific equipment to film on rides. We strongly suggest that you don't use your phone on rides. We've been to look at things to do for free in Blackpool at South Shore near Solaris Centre. Come and take a look... The Mirror Ball is usually the largest single landmark here but it was away being refurbished on the day we made this video. We did 30 tokens for £30 in this vlog, and rides vary from 2 tokens to 4. South Pier is open every day. Rides are weather permitting and closing time varies on weather and public activity but can be open as late at 10pm. There are 2 arcades, game stalls, cafes, shops, toilets and a family bar. In this vlog we show you the whole site and take you on rides too. Please note we use specific equipment to film on rides. We strongly suggest that you don't use your phone on rides. Please also note that permission to film on any of the piers in Blackpool, should be gained before filming. Join Theo and myself as we check out the rides and attractions of South Pier Blackpool in 2023. Based in the South of Blackpool Promenade, South pier is 1 of 3 piers in Blackpool and 1 of 2 that offer a fun fair. Rides are priced individually but token bungles are available. We did 30 tokens for £30 in this vlog, and rides vary from 2 tokens to 4. South Pier is open every day. Rides are weather permitting and closing time varies on weather and public activity but can be open as late at 10pm. There are 2 arcades, game stalls, cafes, shops, toilets and a family bar. In this vlog we show you the whole site and take you on rides too. Please note we use specific equipment to film on rides. We strongly suggest that you don't use your phone on rides. Please also note that permission to film on any of the piers in Blackpool, should be gained before filming. We've been to look at things to do for free in Blackpool at South Shore near Solaris Centre. Come and take a look... The Mirror Ball is usually the largest single landmark here but it was away being refurbished on the day we made this video. The sea bees on the seafront are great rock pools for beachcombing, and you can explore the huge pieces of public art on the promenade. There are plenty of things to do for free in Blackpool if you look for them! South Shore is the bit beyond the Pleasure Beach, with a big flat promenade for you to bike ride and walk along, and plenty of beach.
