The American Breed's 2:05 single mix of this song was sped-up during mastering for release, while the widely available original 2:25 version was done at a normal speed. The following year, The American Breed released their last single, “Anyway That You Want Me,” which borrowed its title phrase from this hit. Co-songwriter Scott English later went on to write and sing “Brandy,” which Barry Manilow later covered as his 1974 breakout hit “Mandy.”
There have been other cover versions of the song. The first cover was released by The Models in 1966 on the MGM label. Other notable versions include one by Amen Corner, slightly altering the lyrics, which reached No. 3 in the UK Singles Chart in 1968. A group called Storm tried a cover version in 1971, but it missed making the Billboard Hot 100. An updated version by Donna McElroy appeared on the Gumby album in 1989. The song was featured in the 1997 film, Wild America.
Bend Me, Shape Me is the second album from the 1960s jazz–rock group The American Breed, released in February 1968. The album peaked at #99 on Billboard's pop albums chart, and the title song became the group's only Top 10 hit, reaching #5 on Billboard's pop singles chart in February 1968. The album and the single both went gold, and remains the group's biggest selling album to this day. The only other major hit single from this album was "Green Light" (#39).
Gilla (born Gisela Wuchinger, 27 February 1950) is an Austrian singer from the late 1970s disco era.
History
Gilla was discovered by German producer Frank Farian who got her signed to Hansa Records in 1974. After an unsuccessful German cover version "Mir ist kein Weg zu weit" of Marcella Bella's Italian hit single "Nessuno mai", Farian had her record a German disco version of Labelle's "Lady Marmalade". Despite being a modest hit (#24), it caused some attention of being the first German record to feature such explicit lyrics as "Willst du mit mir schlafen gehn?" (Do You Want to Sleep With Me) (1975). It was followed later in the year with "Tu es" (also recorded in English as "Why Don't You Do It") which became Gilla's biggest hit, peaking at #10 in the German charts and giving Farian a commercial breakthrough as a producer. Gilla's debut LP, featuring a mix of disco, pop and schlager tracks, was released shortly after.
Gilla: Bend Me, Shape Me [Full Album + Bonus] (1978)
After Gilla's Tu es! became a Top 10-hit in Germany and the English version a Top 20-hit in Holland, her second album Zieh mich aus did not land any hits for her. However, her single Help! Help! (which had originally been released in August '76) suddenly started charting in Holland where it reached #19 in March '77, and Farian and Hansa decided Gilla should release an English-language album. Having already recorded Tu es as Why Don't You Do It, A Baby Of Love, and First Love (B-side of Help! Help!) a further 5 cuts were selected from her two German albums to be re-recorded in English. The LP Help! Help! was released in July 1977 and saw Gilla promoting the single Gentlemen Callers Not Allowed together with Boney M.'s Bobby Farrell. She landed another Top 20-hit in Holland, but found no su...

The LP Help! Help! was released in July 1977 and saw Gilla promoting the single Gentlemen Callers Not Allowed together with Boney M.'s Bobby Farrell. She landed another Top 20-hit in Holland, but found no success in Germany with it. The LP did not sell well, so Farian decided to pull out all the stops with a disco-rock-cover version of the American Breed's 1968 hit, Bend Me, Shape Me. The single was released early 1978, and Hansa Benelux decided to re-release the album, adding the single. After Gilla appeared in a TV-special together with Boney M., the single hit #12 in the Dutch charts, and while it still was no hit in Germany, Hansa also re-released the album there, including the single's B-side The River Sings (which was not on the Dutch LP). With Boney M.'s Rasputin being released September 1978, Farian recorded a German version with Gilla, but it failed to become a hit for her. Gilla would record a second album in English, I Like Some Cool Rock'n Roll, which was released early 1980, but she would soon after withdraw from the music business to raise her and Helmut Rulofs' daughter, Nadine.
