The Battle of Nineveh(Ἡ μάχη τῆς Νινευί) was the climactic battle of the Byzantine-Sassanid War of 602–628. The Byzantine victory later resulted in civil war in Persia and for a period of time restored the empire to its ancient boundaries in the Middle East. This resurgence of power and prestige was not to last, however, as within a matter of decades an Arab Caliphate emerged from Arabia and once again brought the empire to the brink of destruction.
Prelude
When Emperor Maurice was murdered by the usurper Phocas, Khosrau II declared war, ostensibly to avenge his benefactor's death. While the Persians proved largely successful during the first stages of the war, conquering much of the Levant, Egypt, and even Anatolia, the ascendancy of Heraclius eventually led to the Persians' downfall. Heraclius' campaigns altered the balance, forcing the Persians on the defensive and allowing for the Byzantines to regain momentum. Allied with the Avars, the Persians attempted to take Constantinople, but were defeated there.
The Battle of Nineveh is conventionally dated between 613 to 611 BC, with 612 BC being the most supported date. An allied army composed of Medes and the Chaldeans, rebelling Assyrians and Babylonians, together with Scythians and Cimmerians besieged it and sacked it, leading to the destruction of the Neo-Assyrian Empire over the next three years as the dominant state in the Ancient Near East, as well as the destruction of what was at that time the greatest city in the world, covering 750 hectares. After this battle the archeological record shows that the capital of the once mighty Assyrian Empire was extensively de-urbanized and depopulated.
Babylon became the imperial center of Mesopotamia for the first time in over a thousand years leading to the Neo-Babylonian empire, claiming imperial continuity as a new dynasty.
Background
The Neo-Assyrian Empire which arose in the 10th century BC, succeeding the Middle Assyrian Empire (1366-1074 BC), is generally regarded to have reached its peak in the 8th and 7th centuries BC, and was the largest empire the world had yet seen.
It was the largest city in the world for some fifty years until, after a bitter period of civil war in Assyria itself, it was sacked by an unusual coalition of former subject peoples, the Babylonians, Medes, Persians, Chaldeans, Scythians and Cimmerians in 612BC. Its ruins are across the river from the modern-day major city of Mosul, in the Ninawa Governorate of Iraq. The two main tells, or mound-ruins, within the walls are Kouyunjik (Kuyuncuk), the Northern Palace, and Tell Nabī Yūnus.
Name
The English placename Nineveh comes from LatinNinive and SeptuagintGreekNineyḗ (Νινευή) under influence of the BiblicalHebrewNīnewēh (נִינְוֶה), itself from the AkkadianNinua (var. Ninâ) or Old BabylonianNinuwā. The original meaning of the name is unclear, but may have referred to a patron goddess. The cuneiform for Ninâ is a fish within a house (cf. Aramaicnuna, "fish"). This may have simply intended "Place of Fish" or may have indicated a goddess associated with fish or the river itself, possibly originally of Hurrian origin. The city was later said to be devoted to "the Ishtar of Nineveh" and Nina was one of the Sumerian and Assyrian names of that goddess.

The Sack of Nineveh (612 B.C.E.): The Rise of the Iranics in the Near East
In this video I discuss the battle and eventual sack of the Assyrian capital, Nineveh, in 612 B.C.E. The battle saw the triumph of a joint Babylonian and Median army against a declining Assyrian Empire. Ultimately, this victory proved pivotal in the rise of the Iranics in the Near East, beginning with the Medians and later with the emergence of the Achaemenids. Furthermore, it also saw the decline of native Semite dominance in the region, which would last until the rise of the Arabs and Islam in the 7th century.

I've compiled a reading list of my favourite history books via the Amazon influencer program. If you do choose to purchase any of these incredible sources of information then Amazon will send me a tiny fraction of the earnings (as long as you do it through the link) (this means more and better content in the future) I'll keep adding to and updating the list as time goes on:-
