Basilica of Sant'Abbondio
The Basilica of Sant'Abbondio is a church in Como, Lombardy, northern Italy.
The current edifice rises over a pre-existing 5th century Palaeo-Christian church entitled to Sts. Peter and Paul, built by order of St. Amantius of Como, third bishop of the city. Erected c. 1 km outside the city's walls, it was intended to house several relics of the two saints which Amantius had brought from Rome.
The basilica acted as bishop's seat until 1007. Six years later bishop Alberic moved the seat within the walls. The basilica was then entrusted to the Benedictines who, between 1050 and 1095, rebuilt it in Romanesque style. The new edifice was dedicated to Amantius' successor, Abundius. The structures of the Palaeo-Christian church, discovered in 1863 during a restoration, are still marked by black and pale marble stones in the pavement.
The new basilica had a nave and four aisles. It was consecrated by pope Urban II on June 3, 1095.
The church has two notable bell towers rising at the end of the external aisles, in the middle of the nave. The sober façade, once preceded by a portico, has seven windows and a portal. Notable is the external decoration of the choir's windows. There are also Romanesque bas-reliefs and, in the apse, a notable cycle of mid-14th-century frescoes. Under the high altar are the Abundius' relics.

Presiede monsignor Oscar Cantoni Vescovo di Como Confortati dalla preghiera del nostro santo patrono, Sant’Abbondio, che non si stanca mai di intercedere continuamente presso il Dio della misericordia per la sua e nostra Chiesa di Como, anche noi, come il cieco di Gerico, Bartimeo, alziamo con fiducia un grido di supplica al Signore Ge-sù, il nostro Maestro. Gli chiediamo luce, perché in questo tempo di incertezza, ancora tanto condizionato dalla pandemia, sappiamo riprendere con maggior decisione e audacia il cammino di Chiesa che ci sta davanti, perché si tratta di una vera occasione di rigenerazione spirituale. Da un viaggio a Roma, Amanzio riportò alcune reliquie degli apostoli Pietro e Paolo e per esse fece edificare una nuova chiesa, 1000 metri circa fuori le mura.
La basilica fu dedicata a Sant'Abbondio ed elevata a cattedrale nell'818.
L'edificio venne, quindi, affidato ai monaci benedettini, i quali, fra il 1050 ed il 1095, riedificarono la chiesa in stile romanico. Il 3 giugno 1095 la nuova basilica fu consacrata da papa Urbano secondo.
Nel corridoio centrale sono posizionati i monumenti tombali dei Vescovi di Como, tra cui il cardinale Angelo Maria Durini .
Al di sotto dell'altare maggiore sono conservate ed esposte delle reliquie dei Santi Abbondio, Console ed Eusperanzio.
Gli affreschi che adornano il presbiterio costituiscono uno dei cicli pittorici più integri del primo Trecento in Lombardia.
Non si conosce l'autore dell'importante ciclo di affreschi, convenzionalmente chiamato "Maestro di Sant'Abbondio". Studi recenti collocano quest'opera tra il 1315 e il 1324 durante l'episcopato del vescovo francescano Leone Lambertenghi, committente dell'opera.
Nella esecuzione delle scene riguardanti la vita di Gesù l'artista si connota per un linguaggio capace di unire il ritmo pacato del racconto con l'attenzione naturalistica ai dettagli degli abbigliamenti, che offrono uno interessante spaccato sui costumi del tempo.

Abbondio, quarto vescovo di Como, alla sua morte fu sepolto nelle adiacenze della Basilica divenendo, per grandezza del suo ministero, Patrono della diocesi. Nel 450 infatti era stato scelto da papa Leone Magno per una missione a Costantinopoli grazie alla quale i vescovi dell'Oriente, nel Concilio di Calcedonia respingendo le opposte eresie di Nestorio e di Eutiche, si aprirono alla dottrina in difesa della divinità e umanità di Cristo. Le prime notizie risalgono all'anno 818 in cui si nomina per la prima volta la chiesa con la sua attuale dedicazione, ma è possibile che avesse assunto questo titolo già dalla seconda metà del V secolo, quando vi venne sepolto il vescovo Abbondio. Nel 1010 il vescovo Alberico donò la chiesa ai monaci benedettini che, a seguito di ricche donazioni con relative rendite, decisero di ricostruire l’edificio nelle attuali forme romaniche. Nel 1095 Papa Urbano II diretto a Clemond Ferrand per indire la prima crociata, consacrò la basilica permettendo ai monaci benedettini di realizzare il primo nucleo del monastero. Nel 1458, dopo la morte dell'abate, il monastero ormai in decadenza per mancanza di monaci, fu assegnato in commenda a diversi prelati che ne amministrarono il patrimonio. Tra il 1586 e il 1590 il cardinale Tolomeo Gallio fece molti interventi sull'edificio, allo scopo di uniformare la basilica alle prescrizioni del Concilio di Trento, realizzò un nuovo altare maggiore, fece abbassare il soffitto delle navate con la costruzione di volte e modificò la facciata aprendovi una grande finestra. Nel 1616 l'abbazia fu affidata alle monache agostiniane che vi rimasero fino al 1797 quando il monastero fu soppresso con i nuovi ordinamenti della Repubblica Cisalpina. Nel 1834 il vescovo Carlo Romanò fece realizzare il seminario minore negli spazi del chiostro cinquecentesco che rimarrà fino al 1966. Tra il 1863 e il 1874 si realizzarono radicali interventi di restauro ad opera del canonico Serafino Balestra; ulteriori restauri si realizzarono tra il 1928 e il 1936. La basilica presenta cinque navate slanciate e due campanili gemelli posti nella zona presbiteriale, soluzione molto rara in Italia ma comune nella zona renana, il campanile a sud è originale, mentre quella a nord fu ricostruita nel 1868 dopo il crollo del 1784. La copertura in legno della navata centrale è stata ripristinata con restauri del 1929 dopo la demolizione delle volte cinquecentesche in muratura che alteravano la struttura e la luminosità della basilica. Nel 1933, il vescovo Alessandro Macchi consacrò la nuova mensa dell'altare maggiore sotto la quale fece collocare le teche di cristallo con le reliquie dei santi vescovi Abbondio, Console ed Esuperanzio. Il ciclo di affreschi di sant'Abbondio è attribuibile a diverse maestranze, tra queste, importante l'opera di un pittore ignoto che operò tra il 1315 e il 1324 durante l'episcopato del vescovo Leone Lambertenghi, committente dell'opera. Accanto alla basilica, l’antico monastero medioevale, poi seminario, recentemente restaurato nel 2006 che ora è sede della facoltà di Giurisprudenza dell'Università degli Studi dell'Insubria.

Confortati dalla preghiera del nostro santo patrono, Sant’Abbondio, che non si stanca mai di intercedere continuamente presso il Dio della misericordia per la sua e nostra Chiesa di Como, anche noi, come il cieco di Gerico, Bartimeo, alziamo con fiducia un grido di supplica al Signore Ge-sù, il nostro Maestro.
Gli chiediamo luce, perché in questo tempo di incertezza, ancora tanto condizionato dalla pandemia, sappiamo riprendere con maggior decisione e audacia il cammino di Chiesa che ci sta davanti, perché si tratta di una vera occasione di rigenerazione spirituale.
È tempo di ripartenza: deve essere affrontato con coraggio e responsabilità da tutti noi.
Non illudiamoci che tutto ritorni come prima e non attendiamo momenti più favorevoli di questo, più adatti all'annuncio del Vangelo. Se ci lasciamo prendere dalla paura o dalla pigrizia, impediamo alla grazia di Dio di compiere efficacemente la sua opera.
Anche questo è tempo propizio per annunciare la misericordia di Dio e insieme è occasione per uno sguardo di misericordia, di compassione e di proposta nei confronti dei nostri fratelli e delle nostre sorelle, che "gridano a noi".
Accettiamo la sfida di trovare nuove vie di evangelizzazione, con linguaggi accessibili agli uomini di oggi, attingendo anche dai mezzi di comunicazione in uso, partendo però dalle grida che noi percepiamo e possiamo interpretare.
Anche noi, certo, sperimentiamo tanto sconcerto, come tutti i nostri contemporanei, ma ci dichiariamo discepoli del Signore, chiamati per essere inviati, proprio perché, in questo tempo dif-ficile, sappiamo essere uno strumento vivo dell'amore di Dio per tutti gli uomini. Il Signore non ha cessato di amarci e continua a venire in nostro aiuto!

Vorremmo dichiararci disponibili a condividere le gioie e le tristezze di quanti incontriamo e testimoniare a tutti l'azione trasformante di Dio nella vita delle singole persone e delle nostre Co-munità.
Il nostro obiettivo, vero impegno missionario, comune a tutti noi battezzati, consiste nel portare, in tanti modi diversi, il Dio di Gesù Cristo agli uomini di oggi, che agisce attraverso la po-tenza d'amore dello Spirito Santo.
Ciascuno si domandi se e come, nella vita di tutti i giorni, sa parlare esplicitamente, e con natura-lezza, di Dio agli altri, anche a coloro che non credono o sono indifferenti.
Sono tante le persone sfiduciate, che oggi hanno perso il gusto della vita, che si acconten-tano di vivere alla giornata, che hanno rinunciato alla ricerca di Dio o smarrito la gioia che Egli ha promesso ai suoi figli.
Come il cieco Bartimeo, seduto lungo la strada, molti vivono tante dipendenze che bloccano il loro futuro.
La folla di Gerico (in un primo momento) aveva dissuaso Bartimeo dal suo desiderio di ri-correre a Gesù, che passava lungo le vie della città. Eppure Egli solo è in grado di "illuminare coloro che stanno nelle tenebre e nell'ombra di morte"(Lc 1,79) Egli solo "dona la vista ai ciechi" (Sal 145) ossia a noi, con lo sguardo troppo spesso rinchiuso in spazi limitati, incapaci di vedere il bene pos-sibile, che si spalanca di fronte ai nostri occhi.
Come discepoli del Signore, vorremmo essere capaci di riconoscere e interpretare il grido di tanti fratelli e sorelle, che cercano Dio, a volte come a tentoni (At 17,27). Vorremmo essere tra la folla di Gerico che, in un secondo momento, ha poi incoraggiato il cieco Bartimeo a ricorrere a Ge-sù, mentre passava nella loro città: "coraggio, alzati, ti chiama!".
Il grido del cieco Bartimeo è così giunto fino a Gesù, che si è stupito e commosso di essere da lui chiamato "Figlio di Davide". Lo aveva riconosciuto, infatti, come il Messia venuto a salvare i poveri. Così Bartimeo non solo ha riacquistato la vista, ma si è manifestato come un credente.
Potremmo domandarci quale sia stato l'impegno della Comunità cristiana nei confronti del-le famiglie nel tempo della pandemia. Non è stato facile per le famiglie vivere ventiquattro ore al giorno nel ristretto spazio familiare. Sono sorti vari problemi di relazione, sfociati anche in episodi di aggressività.
Non sono i poveri che ricevono da noi, ma è il contrario. Essi ci insegnano a vivere il Vange-lo, sono i nostri maestri evangelizzatori. Domandiamoci perciò in che misura sappiamo accoglierli e andare incontro ad essi con amicizia e semplicità di cuore.

Confortati dalla preghiera del nostro santo patrono, Sant’Abbondio, che non si stanca mai di intercedere continuamente presso il Dio della misericordia per la sua e nostra Chiesa di Como, anche noi, come il cieco di Gerico, Bartimeo, alziamo con fiducia un grido di supplica al Signore Ge-sù, il nostro Maestro.
Gli chiediamo luce, perché in questo tempo di incertezza, ancora tanto condizionato dalla pandemia, sappiamo riprendere con maggior decisione e audacia il cammino di Chiesa che ci sta davanti, perché si tratta di una vera occasione di rigenerazione spirituale.
È tempo di ripartenza: deve essere affrontato con coraggio e responsabilità da tutti noi.
Non illudiamoci che tutto ritorni come prima e non attendiamo momenti più favorevoli di questo, più adatti all'annuncio del Vangelo. Se ci lasciamo prendere dalla paura o dalla pigrizia, impediamo alla grazia di Dio di compiere efficacemente la sua opera.
Anche questo è tempo propizio per annunciare la misericordia di Dio e insieme è occasione per uno sguardo di misericordia, di compassione e di proposta nei confronti dei nostri fratelli e delle nostre sorelle, che "gridano a noi".
Accettiamo la sfida di trovare nuove vie di evangelizzazione, con linguaggi accessibili agli uomini di oggi, attingendo anche dai mezzi di comunicazione in uso, partendo però dalle grida che noi percepiamo e possiamo interpretare.
Anche noi, certo, sperimentiamo tanto sconcerto, come tutti i nostri contemporanei, ma ci dichiariamo discepoli del Signore, chiamati per essere inviati, proprio perché, in questo tempo dif-ficile, sappiamo essere uno strumento vivo dell'amore di Dio per tutti gli uomini. Il Signore non ha cessato di amarci e continua a venire in nostro aiuto!

La basilica di Sant'Abbondio è una delle chiese romaniche più antiche e interessanti del lago di Como. Venne edificata sul luogo di una preesistente basilica paleocristiana intitolata ai santi apostoli Pietro e Paolo, costruita da Amanzio, terzo vescovo di Como.
Da un viaggio a Roma, Amanzio riportò alcune reliquie degli apostoli Pietro e Paolo e per esse fece edificare una nuova chiesa, 1000 metri circa fuori le mura.
La basilica fu dedicata a Sant'Abbondio ed elevata a cattedrale nell'818.
L'edificio venne, quindi, affidato ai monaci benedettini, i quali, fra il 1050 ed il 1095, riedificarono la chiesa in stile romanico. Il 3 giugno 1095 la nuova basilica fu consacrata da papa Urbano secondo.
Nel corridoio centrale sono posizionati i monumenti tombali dei Vescovi di Como, tra cui il cardinale Angelo Maria Durini .
Al di sotto dell'altare maggiore sono conservate ed esposte delle reliquie dei Santi Abbondio, Console ed Eusperanzio.
Gli affreschi che adornano il presbiterio costituiscono uno dei cicli pittorici più integri del primo Trecento in Lombardia.
Non si conosce l'autore dell'importante ciclo di affreschi, convenzionalmente chiamato "Maestro di Sant'Abbondio". Studi recenti collocano quest'opera tra il 1315 e il 1324 durante l'episcopato del vescovo francescano Leone Lambertenghi, committente dell'opera.
Nella esecuzione delle scene riguardanti la vita di Gesù l'artista si connota per un linguaggio capace di unire il ritmo pacato del racconto con l'attenzione naturalistica ai dettagli degli abbigliamenti, che offrono uno interessante spaccato sui costumi del tempo.

La tradizione vuole che la basilica di Sant’Abbondio, sorga su una preesistente chiesa paleocristiana nei pressi di un’area cimiteriale intitolata, da Amanzio terzo vescovo di Como, ai Santi Pietro e Paolo che aveva portato da un viaggio a Roma alcune reliquie dei Santi. Abbondio, quarto vescovo di Como, alla sua morte fu sepolto nelle adiacenze della Basilica divenendo, per grandezza del suo ministero, Patrono della diocesi. Nel 450 infatti era stato scelto da papa Leone Magno per una missione a Costantinopoli grazie alla quale i vescovi dell'Oriente, nel Concilio di Calcedonia respingendo le opposte eresie di Nestorio e di Eutiche, si aprirono alla dottrina in difesa della divinità e umanità di Cristo. Le prime notizie risalgono all'anno 818 in cui si nomina per la prima volta la chiesa con la sua attuale dedicazione, ma è possibile che avesse assunto questo titolo già dalla seconda metà del V secolo, quando vi venne sepolto il vescovo Abbondio. Nel 1010 il vescovo Alberico donò la chiesa ai monaci benedettini che, a seguito di ricche donazioni con relative rendite, decisero di ricostruire l’edificio nelle attuali forme romaniche. Nel 1095 Papa Urbano II diretto a Clemond Ferrand per indire la prima crociata, consacrò la basilica permettendo ai monaci benedettini di realizzare il primo nucleo del monastero. Nel 1458, dopo la morte dell'abate, il monastero ormai in decadenza per mancanza di monaci, fu assegnato in commenda a diversi prelati che ne amministrarono il patrimonio. Tra il 1586 e il 1590 il cardinale Tolomeo Gallio fece molti interventi sull'edificio, allo scopo di uniformare la basilica alle prescrizioni del Concilio di Trento, realizzò un nuovo altare maggiore, fece abbassare il soffitto delle navate con la costruzione di volte e modificò la facciata aprendovi una grande finestra. Nel 1616 l'abbazia fu affidata alle monache agostiniane che vi rimasero fino al 1797 quando il monastero fu soppresso con i nuovi ordinamenti della Repubblica Cisalpina. Nel 1834 il vescovo Carlo Romanò fece realizzare il seminario minore negli spazi del chiostro cinquecentesco che rimarrà fino al 1966. Tra il 1863 e il 1874 si realizzarono radicali interventi di restauro ad opera del canonico Serafino Balestra; ulteriori restauri si realizzarono tra il 1928 e il 1936. La basilica presenta cinque navate slanciate e due campanili gemelli posti nella zona presbiteriale, soluzione molto rara in Italia ma comune nella zona renana, il campanile a sud è originale, mentre quella a nord fu ricostruita nel 1868 dopo il crollo del 1784. La copertura in legno della navata centrale è stata ripristinata con restauri del 1929 dopo la demolizione delle volte cinquecentesche in muratura che alteravano la struttura e la luminosità della basilica. Nel 1933, il vescovo Alessandro Macchi consacrò la nuova mensa dell'altare maggiore sotto la quale fece collocare le teche di cristallo con le reliquie dei santi vescovi Abbondio, Console ed Esuperanzio. Il ciclo di affreschi di sant'Abbondio è attribuibile a diverse maestranze, tra queste, importante l'opera di un pittore ignoto che operò tra il 1315 e il 1324 durante l'episcopato del vescovo Leone Lambertenghi, committente dell'opera. Accanto alla basilica, l’antico monastero medioevale, poi seminario, recentemente restaurato nel 2006 che ora è sede della facoltà di Giurisprudenza dell'Università degli Studi dell'Insubria.

Confortati dalla preghiera del nostro santo patrono, Sant’Abbondio, che non si stanca mai di intercedere continuamente presso il Dio della misericordia per la sua e nostra Chiesa di Como, anche noi, come il cieco di Gerico, Bartimeo, alziamo con fiducia un grido di supplica al Signore Ge-sù, il nostro Maestro.
Gli chiediamo luce, perché in questo tempo di incertezza, ancora tanto condizionato dalla pandemia, sappiamo riprendere con maggior decisione e audacia il cammino di Chiesa che ci sta davanti, perché si tratta di una vera occasione di rigenerazione spirituale.
È tempo di ripartenza: deve essere affrontato con coraggio e responsabilità da tutti noi.
Non illudiamoci che tutto ritorni come prima e non attendiamo momenti più favorevoli di questo, più adatti all'annuncio del Vangelo. Se ci lasciamo prendere dalla paura o dalla pigrizia, impediamo alla grazia di Dio di compiere efficacemente la sua opera.
Anche questo è tempo propizio per annunciare la misericordia di Dio e insieme è occasione per uno sguardo di misericordia, di compassione e di proposta nei confronti dei nostri fratelli e delle nostre sorelle, che "gridano a noi".
Accettiamo la sfida di trovare nuove vie di evangelizzazione, con linguaggi accessibili agli uomini di oggi, attingendo anche dai mezzi di comunicazione in uso, partendo però dalle grida che noi percepiamo e possiamo interpretare.
Anche noi, certo, sperimentiamo tanto sconcerto, come tutti i nostri contemporanei, ma ci dichiariamo discepoli del Signore, chiamati per essere inviati, proprio perché, in questo tempo dif-ficile, sappiamo essere uno strumento vivo dell'amore di Dio per tutti gli uomini. Il Signore non ha cessato di amarci e continua a venire in nostro aiuto!
Per realizzare questo santo proposito, vorremmo che quanti ci avvicinano (immigrati, pro-fughi, persone in difficolta economiche, persone sole o fratelli e sorelle lontane dalla fede o anche in ricerca di Dio) ci riconoscessero, attraverso la nostra umile presenza, come una comunità cristia-na viva, accogliente, con relazioni profonde e mature, che si impegna a vivere un autentico cammi-no di fede, nonostante le fatiche e le debolezze quotidiane.
Vorremmo dichiararci disponibili a condividere le gioie e le tristezze di quanti incontriamo e testimoniare a tutti l'azione trasformante di Dio nella vita delle singole persone e delle nostre Co-munità.
Il nostro obiettivo, vero impegno missionario, comune a tutti noi battezzati, consiste nel portare, in tanti modi diversi, il Dio di Gesù Cristo agli uomini di oggi, che agisce attraverso la po-tenza d'amore dello Spirito Santo.
Ciascuno si domandi se e come, nella vita di tutti i giorni, sa parlare esplicitamente, e con natura-lezza, di Dio agli altri, anche a coloro che non credono o sono indifferenti.
Sono tante le persone sfiduciate, che oggi hanno perso il gusto della vita, che si acconten-tano di vivere alla giornata, che hanno rinunciato alla ricerca di Dio o smarrito la gioia che Egli ha promesso ai suoi figli.
Come il cieco Bartimeo, seduto lungo la strada, molti vivono tante dipendenze che bloccano il loro futuro.
La folla di Gerico (in un primo momento) aveva dissuaso Bartimeo dal suo desiderio di ri-correre a Gesù, che passava lungo le vie della città. Eppure Egli solo è in grado di "illuminare coloro che stanno nelle tenebre e nell'ombra di morte"(Lc 1,79) Egli solo "dona la vista ai ciechi" (Sal 145) ossia a noi, con lo sguardo troppo spesso rinchiuso in spazi limitati, incapaci di vedere il bene pos-sibile, che si spalanca di fronte ai nostri occhi.
Come discepoli del Signore, vorremmo essere capaci di riconoscere e interpretare il grido di tanti fratelli e sorelle, che cercano Dio, a volte come a tentoni (At 17,27). Vorremmo essere tra la folla di Gerico che, in un secondo momento, ha poi incoraggiato il cieco Bartimeo a ricorrere a Ge-sù, mentre passava nella loro città: "coraggio, alzati, ti chiama!".
Il grido del cieco Bartimeo è così giunto fino a Gesù, che si è stupito e commosso di essere da lui chiamato "Figlio di Davide". Lo aveva riconosciuto, infatti, come il Messia venuto a salvare i poveri. Così Bartimeo non solo ha riacquistato la vista, ma si è manifestato come un credente.
Potremmo domandarci quale sia stato l'impegno della Comunità cristiana nei confronti del-le famiglie nel tempo della pandemia. Non è stato facile per le famiglie vivere ventiquattro ore al giorno nel ristretto spazio familiare. Sono sorti vari problemi di relazione, sfociati anche in episodi di aggressività.
Non sono i poveri che ricevono da noi, ma è il contrario. Essi ci insegnano a vivere il Vange-lo, sono i nostri maestri evangelizzatori. Domandiamoci perciò in che misura sappiamo accoglierli e andare incontro ad essi con amicizia e semplicità di cuore.

Basilica of Sant'Abbondio
The Basilica of Sant'Abbondio is a church in Como, Lombardy, northern Italy.
The current edifice rises over a pre-existing 5th century Palaeo-Christian church entitled to Sts. Peter and Paul, built by order of St. Amantius of Como, third bishop of the city. Erected c. 1 km outside the city's walls, it was intended to house several relics of the two saints which Amantius had brought from Rome.
The basilica acted as bishop's seat until 1007. Six years later bishop Alberic moved the seat within the walls. The basilica was then entrusted to the Benedictines who, between 1050 and 1095, rebuilt it in Romanesque style. The new edifice was dedicated to Amantius' successor, Abundius. The structures of the Palaeo-Christian church, discovered in 1863 during a restoration, are still marked by black and pale marble stones in the pavement.
The new basilica had a nave and four aisles. It was consecrated by pope Urban II on June 3, 1095.
The church has two notable bell towers rising at the end of the external aisles, in the middle of the nave. The sober façade, once preceded by a portico, has seven windows and a portal. Notable is the external decoration of the choir's windows. There are also Romanesque bas-reliefs and, in the apse, a notable cycle of mid-14th-century frescoes. Under the high altar are the Abundius' relics.
