Pope Urban II (Latin:Urbanus II; c.1042– 29 July 1099), born Odo of Châtillon or Otho de Lagery, was pope from 12 March 1088 to his death in 1099. He is best known for initiating the First Crusade (1096–99) and setting up the modern-day Roman Curia in the manner of a royal ecclesiastical court to help run the Church.
Pope Urban II was a native of France. He was a descendant of a noble family in Châtillon-sur-Marne.
Bishop of Ostia
Urban, baptized Eudes (Odo), was born to a family of Châtillon-sur-Marne. He was prior of the abbey of Cluny, later Pope Gregory VII named him cardinal-bishop of Ostiac.1080. He was one of the most prominent and active supporters of the Gregorian reforms, especially as legate in Germany in 1084. He was among the four whom Gregory VII nominated as papabile (possible successors). Desiderius, the abbot of Monte Cassino, was chosen to follow Gregory in 1085 but, after his short reign as VictorIII, Odo was elected by acclamation at a small meeting of cardinals and other prelates held in Terracina in March 1088.

📜 Europe's First Crusade - Part 1 - Extra History
In 1095CE, Pope Urban gathered the leaders of the Christian community at the Council of Clermont. 27th November 1095: Pope Urban II launches the First Crusade at the Council of Clermont
By the 11th Century, Christianity had secured a stable base across most of Europe. However the Byzantine Empire was on the very periphery of Christendom and faced continuous threats from Muslim conquests.
The city of Jerusalem had been in Muslim hands since 638, but ongoing wars between different Arab dynasties had resulted in it being captured by the Seljuks in 1076. When their army began threatening to attack Constantinople, the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos appealed to the Pope for assistance. Many historians have since argued that Urban II took advantage of the situation as a way to reunite Christendom under his papacy, which was facing a threat from the Antipope Clement III.

Pope Urban II's Speech to the Council of Clermont (Robert the Monk version)
In 1095, Pope Urban II delivered a blistering incitement to the warriors of Christendom to march to the Middle East and retake the holy city of Jerusalem for the Christian faith.
Several versions of this speech were recorded, the most famous of which is by Fulcher of Chatres. However, other versions of the speech are equally as rousing.

Both peasant groups met with and created disaster: Walter Sans Avoir's group pillaged Belgrade while Count Emicho's group turned on the local Jewish population as an excuse to slaughter them. Thus the First Crusade began with a disastrous People's Crusade.

No accurate record exists of how many people responded to the Pope’s call, but estimates suggest anywhere between 60,000 and 100,000 people joined the First Crusade. A large number of these were ordinary peasants. Exactly why so many people chose to ‘take the cross’ is also a question subject to fierce debate. Some nobles probably went in the hope of seizing riches along the way, but a large number of Crusaders almost certainly did so out of Christian piety.
Although Pope Urban had intended the Crusade to depart on 15 August 1096, large numbers of peasants and low-ranking knights set off earlier on what became known as the People’s Crusade. This group of Crusaders were generally poorly disciplined and had been given little to no military training. They killed thousands of Jews in the pogroms of 1096 before they even left Europe.

📜 Europe's First Crusade - Part 1 - Extra History
In 1095CE, Pope Urban gathered the leaders of the Christian community at the Council of Clermont. Urged on by Emperor Alexius Comnenos of Constantinople, he called for a crusade to retake the Holy Land from the Muslims who occupied Jerusalem. Muslims had occupied the Holy Land for over 400 years, but the timing was politically right for the Pope and the Byzantine Emperor. Pope Urban wanted to re-unite Christendom after the anti-Pope kicked him out of Rome, while Alexius Comnenus wanted to retake the territory he had recently lost in Anatolia from the Seljuq Turks. As incentive, the Pope offered crusaders a plenary indulgence: complete forgiveness for past sins in the eyes of God and the church. It worked too well. While the official armies of the Crusade prepared, a charismatic leader named Peter the Hermit began breaching directly to the people, claiming Jesus had sent him to lead them on Crusade. Walter sans Avoir joined him in France, and a man named Count Emicho of Leiningen emulated him in Germany. Both peasant groups met with and created disaster: Walter Sans Avoir's group pillaged Belgrade while Count Emicho's group turned on the local Jewish population as an excuse to slaughter them. Thus the First Crusade began with a disastrous People's Crusade.
