The Barbary Wars were two wars fought at different times over the same reasons between the United States and the Barbary states (the de jureOttoman Empire possessions of, but de facto independent, Tunis, Algiers, and Tripoli) of North Africa in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. At issue was the Barbary pirates' demand for tribute from American merchant vessels in the Mediterranean Sea. If ships of a given country failed to pay, pirates would attack the ship and take their goods, and often enslavecrew members or hold them for ransom. When Thomas Jefferson became President he refused to pay tribute and sent a United States Navalfleet to the Mediterranean; they bombarded the various fortified pirate cities, ultimately extracting concessions of fair passage from their rulers. Both the administrations of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison undertook actions against the Barbary States at different times. Jefferson led the first, from 1801 to 1805, against pirates' cities in what are today Libya, Tunisia, and Algeria. Madison directed forces for the second war in 1815.
Why was the USA the first to deal with the Barbary Pirates? (Short Animated Documentary)
The Barbary Pirates harassed shipping across the Mediterranean for centuries and in spite of this, it wasn't a European power who struck the first blow against them. It was the Americans in the early 19th century who started their downfall after fighting two wars against them. To find out why it was the Americans that did this instead of the French, the Spanish or the British watch this short and simple animated history documentary.

History With Seb - First Barbary War
Video style is inspired by Oversimplified
Welcome to History with Seb! This video is about the First Barbary War from 1801 to 1805.
It was a conflict between the United States and the Barbary States of North Africa, primarily Tripoli. The Barbary States were known for piracy and demanded tribute from foreign nations. In response to attacks on American merchant ships and the capture of sailors, the United States sent a naval squadron to the Mediterranean. Led by commanders like Commodores Preble and Decatur, American forces engaged in naval battles and blockades. The war concluded in 1805 with a peace treaty, solidifying America's determination to protect its interests and maritime freedom on the international stage.

Christopher Hitchens Talks Jefferson and Barbary Pirates
This is relevant when looking at the causal factors involving radical Islamic terrorism. A lot of mainstream outlets point to conservatism. And while they may have some valid points in how American military decisions in the past may have aggravated things, it's important to realize that Islam itself lends itself to this kind of fundamentalism, which breeds the kinds of horrific acts we've seen recently.

The Barbary Wars:
America's first overseas victory: The war against terror happened a lot earlier than you might think. The victory in that war was the first time the American flag flew over a foreign battlefield. Learn how Thomas Jefferson put an end to a tradition that brutalized sailors and citizens from the Western World for centuries.

Today we start to look at the last half-century of the history of the Barbary States and how they eventually became the architects of their own demise.

Madison directed forces for the second war in 1815.
into World War II ...USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned naval warship still afloat, has a history dating back to the late 18th century and saw action in the FirstBarbary War and the War of 1812.
I believe this more tolerant culture evolved through the adventurous spirit of the Gold Rush as well as through “red light” districts and bars on the BarbaryCoast.
The USSEssex was another prime example of excellence in the early “Old Navy”—as America’s pre-1882 fleet is now called—tallying significant battle success in the Quasi-War with France, the FirstBarbary War, and the War of 1812.
She played a crucial role in the BarbaryWars and the War of 1812, actively defending sea lanes from 1797 to 1855. The ship earned the nickname of Old Ironsides during the War of 1812 when British...
There are, of course, the service deaths in the well known wars ... Then there are the wars forgotten by many today ... The First and SecondBarbaryWars were fought in 1801 and 1815 in North Africa and naval interventions cost a combined 173 military lives.
A 37-year-old man wounded by a wild monkey in Hong Kong is in intensive care suffering from infection with B virus... They include the Barbary apes of Gibraltar, which were provided with rations by the British army after the second world war ... .
The War against the Barbary pirates; the Mexican War; the Spanish-American war; the occupation of the Dominican Republic; WWI; and WWII. (I don’t count the War of 1812, or the War Between the States, because those weren’t foreign adventures.).
