USS Stewart (DD-224) was a Clemson-classdestroyer in the United States Navy during World War II. She was the second ship named for Rear Admiral Charles Stewart. Scuttled in a port, she was later raised by the Japanese and commissioned as Patrol Boat No. 102. She came back under American control in 1945 after the occupation of Japan.
Construction
Stewart was laid down on 9 September 1919 by William Cramp and Sons, Philadelphia; launched on 4 March 1920; sponsored by Mrs. Margaretta Stewart Stevens, granddaughter of Rear Admiral Stewart; and commissioned on 15 September 1920, Lieutenant S. G. Lamb in command.
Service history
United States Navy
After a year of coastal operations with a reserve division, Stewart joined Destroyer Squadron, Atlantic, on 12 October 1921. She participated in fleet exercises in the Caribbean from 12 January to 22 April 1922; and, after repairs, departed Newport, Rhode Island, on 20 June and proceeded, via the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean, to the Philippines for service in the Asiatic Fleet. She was destined not to return to the US for 23 years.
John D. Edwards was laid down 21 May and launched 18 October 1919 by William Cramp & Sons; sponsored by Mrs. May Marshall Edwards, widow of Lieutenant Edwards; and commissioned 6 April 1920, Commander Alexander Sharp in command.
Service history
After shakedown, John D. Edwards departed Philadelphia 14 May 1920 to patrol in Turkish waters. With the Near East in turmoil, the destroyer evacuated refugees and furnished communication facilities for that area. She remained in Turkish waters until she sailed 2 May 1921 for duty with the Asiatic Squadron.
Upon arrival at Cavite, Philippines, 29 June, Edwards immediately began patrols in the Far East. She was to remain there for 4 years operating out of the Philippines in the winter and China during the summer. She aided victims of the Japanese earthquake in 1923 and carried both food and rescue workers to Yokohama.
USS Stewart (DD-224) - “No, I'm Not a Japanese Ship!”
USS Stewart has the unfortunate distinction of being known best for her service under an enemy flag. In fairness, it's a very notable incident. The rare case where an *American* warship flies an enemy flag, outside of the Revolution or War of 1812.
(And the Civil War, for that matter)
Stewart, under the name 'Patrol Boat Number 102', would end out the Second World War under the Japanese flag. She didn't get up to all that much during that period, to be fair, but she's certainly still worth looking at.
And, in the end, she *was* able to end her life in American hands. That's something.
