Palace of Sports or Sports Palace is the name of comprehensive indoors sports venues introduced in the Soviet Union (compare with Palace of Culture) and still used in a number of post-Soviet states. Many of them had standard architectural design. Some of them were renamed, e.g., into Palace of Concerts and Sports.
The term is also used in other countries. For example, in Hispanophone countries, the term is Palacio de los Deportes.
Tbilisi Sport Palace (Georgian:თბილისის სპორტის სასახლე) is an Indoor sports arena situated in Tbilisi, Georgia.
The arena usually hosts basketball, handball, judo, tennis, boxing and other games and tournaments with high attendance. Built in 1961, the arena was used primely for the basketball games of local Dinamo Tbilisi and is still the largest basketball designed arena in all of the former USSR successor states.
The arena was renovated in 2007 and was reopened on August 22, 2007, with management rights given to the Logic Group Ltd for a 30 year contract.
This was the first phase of renovation and reconstruction, with the second phase including changing the roof of the building and installing new individual seats. Total cost of the renovation is estimated at 5 million USD
Concerts
Tbilisi Sports Palace is one of the greatest arena for concerts in Georgia. Many International and national acts have performed here.
Baluan Sholak (Kazakh:Балуан Шолақ, 1864–1919), was a Kazakh composer, singer, poet, dombra player, dzhigit and wrestler.
Biography
Baluan Sholak was born on 11 December 1864, son of a carpenter, in the village of Karaotkel near the Khan mountains in modern Akmola Province, Kazakhstan, and was named Nurmagambetov. At a young age he lost fingers in an accident when his right hand was burnt, and became known as Baluan Sholak, "Fingerless Fighter". As a boy and young man, he demonstrated daring, leadership, agility and extraordinary strength.
He gained fame as a singer of Kazakh songs, promoting the songs of Birzhan Kozhagulova and Achan Seri and composing songs himself. He travelled through Kokshetau, Karaotkel, Bayan-Aul, Irtysh, and Sarysu, staging performances with his troupe of dombra players, singers, storytellers, jockeys and wrestlers. Some of his songs became very popular, including Галия (Galia) and Сентябрь (September). He was also an accomplished dzhigit (skilful horse rider), standing on the back of a galloping horse or riding under the horse's belly. At his performances and at fairs he often demonstrated his strength, athletic ability and fighting prowess. After singing he would remove his colourful costume and lie on the ground, allowing members of his troupe to place a large boulder on his chest and then break the boulder with sledgehammers. On one occasion at the Koyandinsk Fair he battled a well-known fighter named Carona and broke several ribs.
The Baluan Sholak Sports Palace (Kazakh:Балуан Шолақ атындағы спорт сарайы) is a Palace of Sports in Almaty, the former capital of Kazakhstan. It was built in 1967 and extensively renovated in 2009–2011. It is named after Baluan Sholak, a celebrated Kazakh composer, singer, poet, dombra player, dzhigit and wrestler.
Renovation
The renovation was undertaken in preparation for the 2011 Asian Winter Games, for staging the hockey, short track and figure skating events. The closing ceremony of the Games was also held in the Palace. The number of seats was increased to 5000, and support facilities such as gyms, locker rooms and a press centre were added, as well as a medical and rehabilitation complex, commentator booths and electronic displays. The plan also included multi-storey parking for 850 cars.
