Site 31/6 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, in Kazakhstan, is a launch site used by derivatives of the R-7 Semyorka missile. From 2011 onwards, it was supposed to be the launch site for manned Soyuz missions to the International Space Station, when launches switched from the Soyuz-FG carrier rocket to the Soyuz-2, which was unable to use the launch pad at Site 1/5. However, Site 1/5 has undergone modifications that allow the manned ISS missions to be launched from it.
Only few manned missions to the International Space Station are launched from Site 31/6 (Soyuz TMA-06M, Soyuz TMA-15M), when Site 1/5 is unavailable.
It was first used on 14 January 1961, for an R-7AICBM test mission. It is currently used for commercial Soyuz-FG/Fregat missions, and Soyuz-2 launches. In the 1970s and early 1980s, several manned missions were launched from the site.
Baikonur Cosmodrome (Russian:Космодро́м «Байкону́р» Kosmodrom Baykonur; Kazakh:Байқоңыр ғарыш айлағы Bayqoñır ğarış aylağı) is the world's first and largest operational space launch facility. It is located in the desert steppe of Kazakhstan, about 200 kilometres (124mi) east of the Aral Sea, north of the Syr Darya river, near Tyuratam railway station, at 90 metres (300ft) above sea level. It is leased by the Kazakh Government to Russia (until 2050) and is managed jointly by the Roscosmos State Corporation and the Russian Aerospace Forces. The shape of the area leased is an ellipse, measuring 90 kilometres (56mi) east–west by 85 kilometres (53mi) north–south, with the cosmodrome at the centre. It was originally built by the Soviet Union in the late 1950s as the base of operations for its space program. Under the current Russian space program, Baikonur remains a busy spaceport, with numerous commercial, military and scientific missions being launched annually. All manned Russian spaceflights are launched from Baikonur.
Baikonur (Kazakh:Байқоңыр, Bayqoñır; Russian:Байконур, Baykonur), formerly known as Leninsk (also, see Tyuratam), is a city of republic significance in Kazakhstan on the right bank of the Syr Darya river, rented and administered by the Russian Federation. It was constructed to service the Baikonur Cosmodrome and was officially renamed Baikonur by Russian president Boris Yeltsin on December 20, 1995. During the Soviet period it was sometimes referred to as Zvezdograd (Star City).
In 2009 the population of Baikonur was 36,175 (2009 Census results), while in 1999 it was 28,776 (1999 Census results).
The rented area is an ellipse measuring 90km east to west by 85km north to south, with the cosmodrome situated at the area's centre.
History
The original Baikonur (Kazakh for "wealthy brown", i.e. "fertile land with many herbs") is a mining town a few hundred kilometres northeast of the present location, near Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan's Karagandy Region. Starting with Vostok 1 in April 1961, the launch site was given this name to cause confusion and keep the location secret. (The original Baikonur's residents took advantage of the confusion by ordering and receiving many scarce materials before government officials discovered the deception.) Baikonur's railroad station predates the base and retains the old name of Tyuratam. This was the original Soviet railway station (railhead) on the Moscow to Tashkent Railway that the Cosmodrome was initially named after.

How Cold War Shaped The World's First Spaceport | Baikonur Cosmodrome
Cosmodrome is the story of Russia’s "crown jewels": the finest rocket engines in the world, built under conditions of absolute secrecy with the aim of landing a man on the moon. It tells how, at the height of Cold War rivalry, the engineers of the Soviet Union’s elite Design Bureau developed what became the most admired rocket engines money could buy – and how eventually, in a climate driven by commerce not conflict, those engines found their way into American rockets.

Mason then follows Woods through a scrapyard littered with husks of rocket sections. After witnessing Weaver getting stabbed in his left eye by Lev Kravchenko, the player follows Woods to the pipeline down below. A helicopter will fly overhead, and you will need to crouch down out of sight by the pipeline. After the helicopter flies away, follow Woods around the pipeline and sneak up on two Russians to steal their uniforms. To perform this task, the player will be armed with the unique karambit knife and will ram it into one of the Russian's head, the other being handled by Woods. After hiding the bodies, the player and Woods take the Russians' uniform and equipment to disguise themselves. The player will receive the enemy's AK-47 with ACOG and proceed with the mission. After walking a short distance, Mason witnesses Bowman and Brooks killing other two Spetznaz soldiers, where upon Mason joins up with them and continue towards the launch site.
The first stop is the communications building. Once Bowman and Brooks have dealt with the two guards at the door, the player must fight their way up this three-story building to the roof. After disposing of the three guards on the roof, Woods will introduce Mason to the Crossbow with explosive bolts and use that to clear out the guards outside the bunker where Weaver was kept. Once the guards were dealt with, aim and fire the crossbow at the bunker's window to launch a zipline, which they'll use to make a smash-in to rescue Weaver.
After a cutscene, Mason now proceeds on-foot to the auxiliary control bunker to stop the launch, with a countdown of less than five minutes underway. The player must fight their way to the bunker, and when they arrive, Woods will instruct them to plant a C-4 charge on the wall to make a breach-in. Notice there's another collectible intel at the far left corner of the bunker. After Weaver failed to cancel the launch and the rocket is lifting off, Woods will tell Mason to pick up the Valkyrie rocket launcher outside to shoot the rocket down. Launch it and steer the rocket to hit home.
Now the team proceeds into the underground facility. There's a command center on the player's right, right after the player past through the computer room, with the third and final intel collectible for this level. Note that after the computer room, enemy waves are non-stop, but thin out considerably after the first wave, making a steady advance is highly advisable.

Fancy visiting the Russian equivalent of NASA's Kennedy Space Center in the United States? Then look no further than the Baikonur Cosmodrome located in the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan. Home to the Russian space program, it has traditionally been difficult for tourists to obtain permission to visit the launch site.

The player starts out as Alex Mason with a MP5K with Extended Mags and a Red Dot Sight, along with a Python with Speed Reloader.
