Coronavirus: Tokyo hospitals trying to stay ahead - BBC News
Until recently, Japan had been one of the success stories in controlling the spread of Covid-19.
In February and March, Japan succeeded in suppressing early cluster outbreaks, and in keeping total infections in the hundreds.
But now the capital Tokyo appears to have a developing epidemic with more than 3,500 cases confirmed. Countrywide there are now more than 12,000 cases.
Doctors in Tokyo say a state of emergency, declared two weeks ago, is not slowing the spread of the virus enough to stop new cases overwhelming the hospital system.
Rupert Wingfield-Hayes and the BBC's Tokyo team have been inside one hospital just south of the capital, which has built a makeshift Covid-19 unit in just 10 days, to try to deal with the overflow.

The UK left the EU at the beginning of 2020 and the two sides have been talking for months to try to agree a new trading relationship - when the transition rules end on January 1st.
Three main areas remain unresolved between the UK and the EU - fishing rights, competition rules and how any deal would be enforced.

Coronavirus: India's Covid-19 cases surge past one million - BBC News
India added a record number of Covid-19 cases - nearly 35,000 - in the last 24 hours, breaching the one million mark.
It has the world's third-largest case load, after the US and Brazil - the only three countries so far to record more than a million coronavirus cases.
India's active cases account for about a third of its total tally as it has been reporting a high recovery rate and a low death rate from the virus.
But deaths have been rising. At 25,602, they are eighth-highest in the world.
India's number of cases has been on the rise - with nearly record daily surges - in recent weeks. It overtook Russia earlier this month to occupy the third spot for the highest number of coronavirus cases globally.

Today's UK government daily briefing is led by Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove. Joining him for the Downing Street briefing is Professor Stephen Powis, the medical director for NHS England.
Testing falls below the government’s daily target. The latest UK figures show that daily testing has fallen below the government’s target of 100,000 tests per day by the end of April. The figures for the 24 hours up to 9am on Sunday showed 76,496 tests. NHS England Medical Director Professor Stephen Powis acknowledged that the number represented a “little bit of a dip”.
The Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who set the testing goal, said on Friday that it had been met by the end of April – with 122,347 tests conducted on the final day of the month.
But the government was criticised for including 40,000 postal tests that were sent out but not necessarily done.
The figures announced on Saturday, for the 24 hours up to 9am that day, showed 105,937 tests.

More than 60,000 people have now died in the UK after infection with coronavirus — one of the highest death rates in the world.
It came as the first doses of the newly approved Pfzier coronavirus vaccine have arrived in the UK. They've been taken to a secret location from where they'll be distributed to hospitals all over the UK over the next few days.
The first phase of the role out programme is expected to begin on Tuesday. England's deputy chief medical officer, Professor Jonathan Van Tam, says 99% of Covid-19 deaths could be prevented, if there's a very high uptake of jabs in the most vulnerable groups.
The UK is the first in the world to approve this vaccine - confidence in it is safety is critical - yet the speed of it all has been criticised by some, including the top infectious disease expert in the US, Anthony Fauci.

Negotiators for the UK and the EU have been in last-ditch talks to try to secure a post-Brexit trade deal.
The head of the UK team, Lord Frost, said they were “working very hard” to reach an accord, although Ireland's Prime Minister said things were on a knife edge.
The UK left the EU at the beginning of 2020 and the two sides have been talking for months to try to agree a new trading relationship - when the transition rules end on January 1st.
Three main areas remain unresolved between the UK and the EU - fishing rights, competition rules and how any deal would be enforced.
