Ayn Rand (/ˈaɪnˈrænd/; born Alisa Zinov'yevna Rosenbaum, Russian:Али́са Зино́вьевна Розенба́ум; February 2[O.S. January 20]1905– March 6, 1982) was a Russian-born American novelist, philosopher, playwright, and screenwriter. She is known for her two best-selling novels, The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957), and for developing a philosophical system she called Objectivism. Born and educated in Russia, Rand moved to the United States in 1926. She had a play produced on Broadway in 1935–1936. After two early novels that were initially unsuccessful in America, she achieved fame with her 1943 novel, The Fountainhead.
In 1957, she published her best-known work, the novel Atlas Shrugged. Afterward, she turned to non-fiction to promote her philosophy, publishing her own magazines and releasing several collections of essays until her death in 1982. Rand advocated reason as the only means of acquiring knowledge, and rejected faith and religion. She supported rational and ethical egoism, and rejected altruism. In politics, she condemned the initiation of force as immoral, and opposed collectivism and statism as well as anarchism, and instead supported laissez-fairecapitalism, which she defined as the system based on recognizing individual rights. In art, Rand promoted romantic realism. She was sharply critical of most philosophers and philosophical traditions known to her, except for Aristotle and some Aristotelians, and classical liberals.
A Sense of Life is the 1965 English translation of Un Sens à la Vie, by the French writer, poet and pioneering aviator, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The original French compilation was published posthumously in 1956 by Editions Gallimard, and translated into English by Adrienne Foulke, with an introduction by Claude Reynal. Saint-Exupéry was killed during the Second World War while flying for the Free French Air Force.
The book is a chronological anthology of Saint-Exupéry's writings, ranging from an excerpt from his very earliest successful story, L'Évasion de Jacques Bernis, published by Jean Prévost as The Aviator, through his news dispatches from Moscow and the front lines of the Spanish Civil War, to the center-pieces of his most philosophical writings, to his last Letter to General X written shortly before Saint-Exupéry's death. Also included is his Open Letter To Frenchmen Everywhere, extolling unity among Frenchmen worldwide after the Fall of France.
The book showcases a wide variety of the author-aviator's writings and writing styles throughout his entire career.
Paxton first encountered Rand's work in 1970 at the age of 13, when he read her novel We the Living. In 1977 he saw her speak at the Ford Hall Forum, an experience that he later cited as an inspiration for his approach to the documentary.

Ayn Rand - What Is Capitalism? (full course)
This 1967 lecture is Ayn Rand’s flagship talk on capitalism. In it she explains in depth what capitalism is, why it is often misunderstood and why it is the only social system consonant with man’s nature. She discusses the philosophical and ethical roots of capitalism, and contrasts them with the moral-philosophic doctrines that lead to rule by force. She then discusses progress under capitalism and how it is fundamentally different from the so-called progress of a statist society. Along the way, Rand takes up such questions as:
• What is the essence of man’s nature?
• What is the fundamental basis for the concept of individual rights?
• How is capitalism consonant with man’s nature? Why are other social systems not consonant with it?
• Why is serving “the common good” not a sound princip...

Ayn Rand, author of the still resonating Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead, sat down with Mike Wallace in a dark studio in 1959. The two had the kind of lively, smart, give and take, back and forth, philosophical conversation that certainly feels like it's from another era. Wallace smoked at times during the interview. The mood was still. The camera work direct.
What struck us about this golden interview was hearing Rand passionately and fo...

Ayn Rand was a Russian-American writer and philosopher who lived in the twentieth century. Born in Russia, she moved to America when she was in her 20’s; there she wrote several novels, some of the most famous being: The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. Towards the end of her life, she focused more on philosophy, founding the philosophy of Objectivism, the four main principles of which are: Objective reality, which is the reality that exists independently of consciousness, Absolute reason, which means that the guidance of facts far outweighs the guidance of faith or emotion, Individualism, which means the proper moral purpose of one's life is the pursuit of one's own happiness, and Laissez-faire capitalism, which is a system based on protecting human rights and property rights. Her main philosophical view is that knowledge can be acquired only through the process of reasoning and she rejected religion and faith. She attacked many past philosophers, with the exception of a few, like Aristotle and Thomas Acquinas. She was inspired by Nietzsche and John Locke and she was against Immanuel Kant, whom she named “the most evil man in mankind's history” because she thought his ethics opposed the self-interests of human beings. During her life, she was involved in many political movements and made connections with journalists, economists, including the economist Ludwig von Mises, who referred to her as "the most courageous man in America", a compliment that pleased her because he said "man" instead of "woman", implying that she was more courageous, had more guts than any man. Through the Objectivism movement, her work became known more and more to the public.

• Why is serving “the common good” not a sound principle for governing a free society?
• What are the different perspectives on “the good,” and how do they inform people’s views on what constitutes a proper social system?
• What has been the ethical basis of all tyrannies in history?
• Who prospers on a free market?
• How does a free market unleash man’s creative abilities?
• What is so often misunderstood about progress under capitalism?
This talk is excerpted from Rand’s substantially longer and more comprehensive essay of the same name. Students interested in mastering Rand’s views on capitalism are encouraged to study the full essay, available here, in addition to enjoying this course.

What struck us about this golden interview was hearing Rand passionately and forcefully about her view on the essence of what drives much of life: love. To her it was like a business deal. Love was not about the other person, but the selfish pleasure it brings you.
Was Ayn Rand right about the true meaning of love and happiness?
More classic Ayn Rand:
"Aristotle... is the only philosopher that ever influenced me. I devised the rest of my philosophy myself."
"Man is entitled to his own happiness. And that he must achieve it himself.
"Man cannot demand that others give up their lives to make him happy."
"Nobody has ever given a reason why men should be their brother’s keepers."
"You don‘t love causes. You don’t love everybody indiscriminately. You love only those who deserve it."

So with that in mind, here are 9 important lessons that we can learn from Ayn Rand -
01. Use reason in everything
02. Be selfish
03. Follow your own values
04. Don’t play the victim
05. Develop your self-esteem
06. Be honest
07. Earn your money honourably
08. Never give up
09. Always Keep growing
I hope you enjoyed watching the video and hope these 9 Life Lessons From Ayn Rand will add value to your life.

" I have no faith at all. I only hold convictions."

In this 1961 lecture, delivered to the Presidents Club of the American Management Association, Ayn Rand outlines commonly heard arguments for capitalism and emphasizes that the only proper defense is a moral one. She seeks to explain why capitalism has been so savagely attacked and why businessmen often bear those attacks in silence.
