The Guianas: South America's Weirdest Countries?
At the top of South America are three small territories. Until about ten years ago, not a single road connected them to the outside world. They are some of the world’s least talked about places and yet all three have interesting stories to tell. Stories of sugar and slavery, calypso and cults. In this series of videos I’m going to tell the story, of the Guianas...

How Guyana Was Made
Guyana is a place of deep, deep social fractures. It has the 20th highest homicide rate in the world, almost three times the global average. Almost anywhere here in the capital city it’s strongly advised not to walk alone at night.
So how did this tiny paradise get so violent? Unlike Brazil or Colombia or El Salvador, the story of Guyana is a little different. This video looks at how the Europeans smashed together the people of three different continents to create this little colony of sugar.

Guyana: Everything You Need to Know
Since independence Guyana has been dysfunctional and neglected, the product of the colonial powers transporting hundreds of thousands of people from Asia and Africa to grow sugar for them. That might be about to change. In 2015, Exxonmobil announced that it had struck oil off the coast of Guyana. Since then, Exxon has found an average of 1.7 billion barrels per year, one of the biggest oil strikes in history, in a country of only 800,000 people. As of 2023, Guyana’s economy is three times larger than it was only three years ago and Guyana has more barrels of oil per person than any other country in the world. This video is about everything you need to know to understand Guyana, today.

Our 10 day trip through Guyana starts here in the capital of Georgetown!
This was an incredible trip to one of the least visited countries in the world. We started in Georgetown and got the chance to try to make the famous Seven Curry, with Singing Chef Adventures. Then we went to the National Park to find the manatees, before finally ending up along the river for sunset.
From exploring the Amazon basin, to finding a harpies eagle nest, to staying in community eco lodges and finally flying to Kaiteur Falls - Guyana is a country to add your list.

Guyana: An African Dictatorship?
The story of Guyana is winding, and often dark. Guyana at independence, you could say, was made up of people who rather hadn’t wanted to come here. This video is going to tell the story of Guyana since its independence and how it came to be where it is now, a country about to be transformed. We are going to look at its divisions and its darkness and hopefully also what is beautiful. This is the story of the years of Linden Forbes Burnham.

Special thanks to Wilderness Explorers for the incredible itinerary - https://wilderness-explorers.com/
Check out Singing Chef Adventures - https://www.singingchefadventures.com/
Huge thanks to @jonny.melon for the extra drone footage.

Arrowroot is a perennial plant growing to a height of between 0.3 m (1 ft) and 1.5 m (5 ft). Its leaves are lanceolate. The edible part of the plant is the rhizome. Twin clusters of small white flowers bloom about 90 days after planting. The plant rarely produces seed and reproduction is typically by planting part of a rhizome with a bud. Rhizomes are ready for harvesting 10–12 months after planting as leaves of the plant begin to wilt and die. The rhizomes are fleshy, cylindrical, and grow from 20 cm (8 in) to 45 cm (18 in) long.
The arrowroot plant probably originated in the Amazon rainforest of north-western Brazil and neighboring countries. It grows best between temperatures of 23 °C (73 °F) and 29 °C (84 °F) with annual precipitation between 150 cm (59 in) and 200 cm (79 in). The dormant rhizomes can withstand temperatures as low as 5 °C (41 °F).
In the continental United States, arrowroot is cultivated as an outside plant only in southern Florida.
Distribution
Maranta arundinacea is native to Mexico, Central America, the West Indies (Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Lesser Antilles) and South America (Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana).[2] It is widely cultivated in the many warm countries and is considered naturalized in Jamaica, Bahamas, Bermuda, the Netherlands Antilles, India, Sri Lanka, China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Yunnan), Taiwan, Volcano Islands, Mauritius, Réunion, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Florida, Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines.[6][7]
The Caribbean island nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is the world's largest grower of arrowroot and producer of arrowroot flour.[8] In Kerala, India, arrowroot, locally called bilathi koova, is cultivated to produce an easily digestible starch.[9]
Prehistoric domestication
Radio-carbon dating has established that M. arundinacea was one of the first plants domesticated in prehistoric South America. Arrowroot, along with leren (Calathea allouia), squash (Cucurbita moschata), and bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) became cultivated plants in northern South American and Panama between 8200 BC and 5600 BC.[10] Some archaeologists believe that arrowroot was first used by Native Americans not as food but as a poultice to extract poison from wounds caused by spears or arrows.[11]
Evidence of the use of arrowroot as food has been found dating from 8200 BC at the San Isidro archaeological site in the upper Cauca River valley of Colombia near the city of Popayán. Starch grains from arrowroot were found on grinding tools. It is unclear whether the arrowroot had been gathered or grown, although the elevation of the site of 1,700 metres (5,600 ft) is probably outside the normal range of elevations at wh

The kukri (English: /ˈkʊkri/)[2] or khukuri (Nepali: खुकुरी, pronounced [kʰukuri]) is a type of short sword with a distinct recurve in its blade originated in Nepal. It serves multiple purposes as a melee weapon and also as a regular cutting tool throughout most of South Asia. The kukri, khukri, and kukkri spellings are of Indian English origin,[3][better source needed] with the original Nepalese English spelling being khukuri.[citation needed]
Originating from the Indian subcontinent, the kukri is the national weapon of Nepal, traditionally serving the role of a basic utility knife for the Nepali-speaking Gurkhas,[4] and consequently is a characteristic weapon of the Nepali Army.[5]
There have been, and still are many myths surrounding the kukri since its earliest recorded use in the 7th century—most notably that a traditional custom revolves around the blade in which it must draw blood, owing to its sole purpose as a fighting weapon, before being sheathed. However, they are frequently used as regular utility tools.[6][7]
MACHETE !!!
A machete (/məˈʃɛti/; Spanish pronunciation: [maˈtʃete]) is a broad blade used either as an agricultural implement similar to an axe, or in combat like a long-bladed knife. The blade is typically 30 to 45 centimetres (12 to 18 in) long and usually under 3 millimetres (1⁄8 in) thick. In the Spanish language, the word is possibly a diminutive form of the word macho, which was used to refer to sledgehammers.[1] Alternatively, its origin may be machaera, the name given by the Romans to the falcata.[2][3] It is the origin of the English language equivalent term matchet,[4] though it is less commonly used. In much of the English-speaking Caribbean, such as Jamaica,[5] Barbados, Guyana, Grenada, and Trinidad and Tobago, the term cutlass is used for these agricultural tools.[6]

Ganesha (Sanskrit: गणेश, IAST: Gaṇeśa), also known as Ganapati, Vinayaka, and Pillaiyar, is one of the best-known and most worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon. His image is found throughout India.Hindu denominations worship him regardless of affiliations. Devotion to Ganesha is widely diffused and extends to Jains and Buddhists and includes Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia (Java and Bali), Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, and Bangladesh and in countries with large ethnic Indian populations including Fiji, Guyana, Mauritius, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Although Ganesha has many attributes, he is readily identified by his elephant head.He is widely revered, more specifically, as the remover of obstacles and thought to bring good luck the patron of arts and sciences; and the deva of intellect and wisdom. As the god of beginnings, he is honoured at the start of rites and ceremonies. Ganesha is also invoked as a patron of letters and learning during writing sessions.Several texts relate mythological anecdotes associated with his birth and exploits.
While scholars differ about his origins dating him between 1st century BCE to 2nd century CE, Ganesha was well established by the 4th and 5th centuries CE, during the Gupta period and had inherited traits from Vedic and pre-Vedic precursors.Hindu mythology identifies him as the son of Parvati and Shiva of the Shaivism tradition, but he is a pan-Hindu god found in its various traditions. In the Ganapatya tradition of Hinduism, Ganesha is the Supreme Being. The principal texts on Ganesha include the Ganesha Purana, the Mudgala Purana and the Ganapati Atharvasirsha.
