Europe's Lost Kingdom (And What If It Survived?) | Alternate History
One of the most noteworthy lost kingdoms or states in European history which had an opportunity to change the dynamics of power on the continent was the often mentioned but seldom explored state of Burgundy, specifically the Duchy of Burgundy, whose lands were contested between between the still emerging and still centralizing Kingdom of France and Holy Roman Empire. The Duchy of Burgundy, under the leadership of Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy, sought to emulate French centralization and establish a Burgundian Kingdom as a powerful and wealthy buffer-state between France and the HRE. This follows on the back of the Hundred Years War between France and England, when the English attempted to conquer the whole of France, but were ultimately repelled. Burgundy had supported England against ...

The Kingdom of Arles
A 3D Virtual recreation of the Town of Arles in France where many believe Vincent Van Gogh produced his finest work. I have built this a few times now but this is by far the best and final version. I had the great honour to work with Keoki Trask on this project. He has composed the soundtrack to this movie, a truly stunning piece of work. You can find more of his amazing tracks on iTunes and Amazon.

The Burgundian Kingdom
Supposedly originating from the Baltic island of Bornholm, the Burgundians were an attested tribe by the first century AD. At the time, they were settled beyond the Oder river. In the third century, attacked by the Gepids, they started migrating south-west.

I formed Burgundy against all odds
CK3 Formable Nations are something we all pursue in Crusader Kings 3. Today, we contend with CK3 HRE and CK3 France in order to form the KINGDOM OF BURGUNDY! CK3 Burgundy is a formable kingdom that can only be formed with "Unite the Burgundies". For this decision, you need to completely control the burgundy region and have high enough prestige. But that's not all, we also go after the BYZANTINE EMPIRE and claim the THRONE OF ROME!

The "Forgotten" Kingdom of Germany (illustrated History)
The Kingdom of Germany (mostly known as “Eastern Francia” was a short-lived German State that existed centuries before the German Empire, until it was part of the HRE and slowly became more and more Split and decentralized. While not 100% under the control of a singular ruler, it was the closest thing to a “united German state”.Obviously I had to simplify a lot of it for the sake of watchTime.

Europe's Longest War: The Battle for the Ghost Kingdom that Decided the Fate of a Continent
Lotharingia is possibly the most important kingdom to ever exist that you’ve possibly never heard of! When the Carolingian empire broke up in the early 800s, it was divided into three parts: East Francia, Middle Francia, and West Francia. Two of those, West and East Francia, eventually became the modern states of Germany and France. Middle Francia eventually became the short lived kingdom of Lotharingia—the Kingdom of Lothar. For two centuries the loyalties of Lotharingia flipped back and forth between East and West Francia, and in a sense, the fighting never stopped.
Much of the history of Europe can be looked as attempts to put the Roman Empire back together again, and the Carolingian empire of the Franks was a serious attempt. But it failed. From one view, the fighting it unleashed co...

ARLES CITY IN FRANCE, PROVENCE WEEK END TOUR PART 1 BY BUENA G!
Many artists have lived and worked in Arles and the surrounding region because of the fabled southern light which creates the perfect ambience for painters. These have included Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin, Jacques Réattu, and Peter Brown. Probably most famously for Arles was the Dutch post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh who lived in Arles from 1888 to 1889, and produced over 300 paintings and drawings during his time there.
Van Gogh suffered from psychotic episodes and delusions, often neglected his physical health, did not eat properly and drank heavily. He was considered a madman and a failure. Van Gogh spent time in various psychiatric hospitals and eventually shot himself in the chest with a revolver, dying two days later on 29 July 1890. By that time, he had painted 2100 pictu...

Duchy of Burgundy
The Duchy of Burgundy emerged in the 9th century as one of the successors of the ancient Kingdom of the Burgundians, which after its conquest in 532 had formed a constituent part of the Frankish Empire. Upon the 9th-century partitions, the French remnants of the Burgundian kingdom were reduced to a ducal rank by King Robert II of France in 1004. Robert II's son and heir, King Henry I of France, inherited the duchy but ceded it to his younger brother Robert in 1032. Other portions had passed to the Imperial Kingdom of Arles and the County of Burgundy .
Robert became the ancestor of the ducal House of Burgundy, a cadet branch of the royal Capet dynasty, ruling over a territory that roughly conformed to the borders and territories of the modern region of Burgundy . Upon the extinction of th...

Burgundy had supported England against France, and like the English Kingdom, now sought to assert their independence from the French, but with the medieval period coming to an end, and powerful states with centralized governments and monarchs taking prominence, Burgundy's arrival may have come a little too late. But what if that changed? What if in an alternate timeline Europe's lost kingdom had survived? How would Burgundy effect European politics? Who would be Burgundy's allies? What would happen to France? We'll be explaining and exploring how Europe's lost kingdom could have survived, and what the consequences of that would be in this alternate history.

I had the great honour to work with Keoki Trask on this project. He has composed the soundtrack to this movie, a truly stunning piece of work. You can find more of his amazing tracks on iTunes and Amazon.

Supposedly originating from the Baltic island of Bornholm, the Burgundians were an attested tribe by the first century AD. At the time, they were settled beyond the Oder river. In the third century, attacked by the Gepids, they started migrating south-west.

From one view, the fighting it unleashed continued for a thousand years between France and Germany as they fought wars against one another for control of Lotharingia, which helps explain why France felt it had natural borders during the French Revolution and why Napoleon annexed the region, and why Bismarck annexed Lorraine and why the French were so eager to get it back.

By that time, he had painted 2100 pictures.
In one incident, a long friendship he had with the famous artist, Paul Gauguin, ended after an epic argument in Arles during which, in a rage, Van Gogh cut off part of his own left ear with a razor. His wound was treated in the serene hospital in Arles, with its gorgeous courtyard and dappled sunlight from the trees, which can still be visited today.
Although Van Gogh was always poor and, incredibly, only sold one painting in his lifetime, after his suicide his works became both famous and super valuable. He has captured the public imagination as a misunderstood artistic genius and his works are now held in internationally renowned museums and private collections around the world.
Today, Arles’s artistic profile is less colourful, but still it is magnet for talented artists, including a world-renowned international photography festival which has taken p[lace since 1970.
The historic city of Arles in beautiful Provence in the South of France is a jewel. It is hard to believe but Arles is the largest city in France with A surface area of 758 km² and used to be the Capital of Gaul when the Romans conquered most of France almost 2000 years ago. Today, it is unique in having TWO listings on the UNESCO World heritage List, one for its Roman History and monuments" and the other one for more recent cultural and artistic contribution to the world.
The city is located inland on the River Rhone which connects directly to the Mediterranean, which mean that it was a strategic trading port for maritime trade as far back as the Phoenicians. The Romans recognised this and took the town in 123 BC and built a stunning amphitheatre, a triumphal arch, a Roman Circus and theatre, much of it very well preserved today. The city reached a peak of influence during the 4th and 5th centuries, when Roman Emperors frequently used it as their headquarters during military campaigns in Europe. Finally, Constantine III made Arles his capital in 408AD.
The amphitheatre may not be as famous as the Colosseum in Rome, but it is in better shape. The building is 136 m in length and 109 m wide, and features 120 arches and 60 terraces, with bleachers, a system of galleries and many corridors and staircases for a quick exit for the 20000 spectators. The games consisted of chariot races, bloody hand-to-hand battles for gladiators and reportedly events where slaves and Christians would be fed to lions and other wild beasts. Today, the events are less blood-thirsty and the crowds are smaller, but the arena is still used for the Feria d'Arles as well as plays and concerts in summer.
With the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century, incredibly the amphitheatre was re-purposed into a shelter for the population including more than 200 houses, a public square, 2 chapels and a fortress . This new residential role continued until the late 18th century, when the site became national historical monument.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, Arles’s political history continued to be turbulent with the Moors capturing the city in 735AD. In 855, it was made the capital of a Frankish Kingdom of Arles, which included Burgundy and part of Provence, but was frequently terrorised by Saracen and Viking raiders.
For the next 500 years, Arles was the capital of various kingdoms and dukedoms, but gradually fell in prominence until the 12th century, when it became a free city governed by an elected chief magistrate, who appointed consuls and other magistrates. It retained this status until the French Revolution of 1789.
Today, Arles is a good example of the adaptation of an ancient city to medieval European civilization and today great modernity. Roman treasures, the lazy Rhone river, the amazing Saturday market, ancient and modern architecture, shady squares and a splash of the local mix of cultures all make Arles a seductive place to explore and a stepping stone into both the Camargue and Provence, an environment of exceptional beauty. THIS CITY IS A MUST ON ANY ITIRENARY!!

Upon the extinction of the Burgundian male line with the death of Duke Philip I in 1361, the duchy reverted to King John II of France and the royal House of Valois. The Burgundian duchy was absorbed in a larger territorial complex after 1363, when King John II ceded the duchy to his younger son Philip. With his marriage with Countess Margaret III of Flanders, he laid the foundation for a Burgundian State which expanded further north in the Low Countries collectively known as the Burgundian Netherlands. Upon further acquisitions of the County of Burgundy, Holland and Luxemburg, the House of Valois-Burgundy came into possession of numerous French and imperial fiefs stretching from the western Alps to the North Sea, in some ways reminiscent of the Middle Frankish realm of Lotharingia.
