Ankara is the capital and the second-largest city of Turkey, occupying a significant position in the country. Located in the Central Anatolia region, Ankara has been home to many civilizations throughout history, boasting various cultural heritages.
One of the oldest settlements in Anatolia, Ankara's history dates back to around 2000 BC. It has been ruled by Hittites, Phrygians, Lydians, Persians, Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans, among others.
Ankara was declared the capital by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey. Therefore, the city is rich in historical and cultural heritage. Some of these include Anıtkabir (the mausoleum of Atatürk), Atatürk Orman Çiftliği (Atatürk Forest Farm), Atatürk House Museum, Ankara Castle, and many Roman-era monuments. Let's walk together.

Turkey Terror Attack: Video Captures Exact Moment Terrorist Storm in TUSAS, Ankara Defence Facility
In a brazen daylight assault, attackers jumped from a car and targeted the Turkish Aerospace Industries facility, located in Kahramankazan, approximately 40 kilometers north of Ankara. Reports indicate that the shooters have taken hostages during the attack, which involves multiple assailants, including a suspected female terrorist. Unconfirmed sources suggest that one of the terrorists may have self-detonated during the incident. In response, Turkey's SWAT team has successfully neutralized two of the three shooters on-site. The Turkish Aerospace Industries facility is recognized as a critical hub for aerospace systems in the country, further underscoring the severity and implications of this attack.

Erdogan and Kilicdaroglu vote in Turkey’s first-ever presidential election run-off
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan cast his vote at the Saffet Cebi Middle School in the Uskudar district of Istanbul on Sunday in Turkey’s first-ever presidential election run-off.

Erdogan Loses Ankara in Turkey's Key Municipal Elections
NEWS DESK | Turkey's President Erdogan's ruling party has lost control of several big cities in the country's local elections. His party has won every vote since the party since came to power in 2002. Our Mohammed Al-Kassim has the story.
Story:
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's party faced a major upset on Monday as opposition parties triumphed in the country's municipal elections, seizing control of key power centers Ankara and Istanbul.
Sunday's vote came amid an economic downturn in Turkey and has been widely seen as a referendum on Erdogan's leadership, whose party has now been in power for a decade and a half.
Losing the country's two major cities would be a stunning defeat for Erdogan, a former Istanbul mayor himself, whose ability to win repeatedly at the ballot bo...

Turkey local elections: Setback for Erdogan in big cities - BBC News
The party of Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has lost control of the capital, Ankara, in local elections in a setback after 16 years in power.
The opposition is also ahead in the contest for mayor of the largest city, Istanbul, the election commission says.
Nationally, the president's AKP-led alliance has won more than 51% of the vote in the municipal elections.
But the AKP is challenging the results in the capital and Istanbul - seen as the greatest electoral prize.
The vote, considered a verdict on Mr Erdogan's rule, has been taking place during an economic downturn.
The currency, the lira, has been losing value recently and the economy went into recession in the last three months of 2018.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan cast his vote at the Saffet Cebi Middle School in the Uskudar district of Istanbul on Sunday in Turkey’s first-ever presidential election run-off.
In the capital Ankara, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and joint candidate for the six-party opposition Nation Alliance, cast his ballot at a polling station.
More than 64.1 million people are expected to vote in the run-off, including over 1.92 million overseas voters who have already cast their ballot.
Millions of voters went to the polls on May 14 to elect the country's president and members of its 600-seat parliament. Despite Erdogan’s People’s Alliance winning a majority against the opposition's six-party Nation Alliance in parliament, no presidential candidate managed to secure the required 50% in the first round.

Losing the country's two major cities would be a stunning defeat for Erdogan, a former Istanbul mayor himself, whose ability to win repeatedly at the ballot box has been unparalleled in Turkish history.
In a major upset to the ruling party, Erdogan's AKP party lost control of the capital city Ankara, as results on Monday showed the secularist Republican People's Party (CHP) candidate Mansur Yavas emerging victorious.
In Istanbul, the opposition candidate for mayor- Ekrem Imamoglu- was also leading Monday by nearly 28,000 votes with most of the already counted, Supreme Election Board (YSK) chairman Sadi Guven said.
Imamoglu won 4,159,650 votes while the Justice and Development Party (AKP) candidate and former premier Binali Yildirim garnered 4,131,761 votes in the city.
Both candidates had claimed victory in the early hours of Monday following a tightly contested race for the country's largest city and economic hub and with preliminary results showing them in a dead heat.
Procedures to challenge the vote continue, Guven said with 84 ballot boxes left to the counted.
Erdogan campaigned hard portraying the vote for mayors and district councils as a fight for the nation's survival, but the election became a test of AKP's support after an economic slowdown hit Turkey.
With 99 percent of the ballot boxes counted early on Monday, opposition candidate for Ankara mayor, Mansur Yavas was ahead with 50.89 percent of votes and the AKP on 47.06 percent, Anadolu state agency reported.
Erdogan, whose ability to win repeatedly at the polls is unparalleled in Turkish history, appeared more vulnerable with the economy in recession for the first time in a decade, unemployment higher and inflation in double digits.
In Ankara, the opposition candidate for mayor, Mansur Yavas, was ahead with 50.89 percent of votes ahead of the AKP's Mehmet Ozhaseki on 47.06 percent, Anadolu state agency reported, with 99 percent of ballot boxes counted.
'Ankara has won. The loser in Ankara is Ozhaseki, dirty politics has lost. Democracy has won,' Yavas told supporters who were waving red Turkish flags and setting off fireworks at a celebratory rally.
AKP officials had said they would object to what they claimed were tens of thousands of invalidated votes in both of the major cities.
Speaking to supporters in Ankara, Erdogan said the election was a victory for the AKP, which along with its coalition partner, the rightwing Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), won more than 50 percent of votes nationwide.
But the Turkish leader appeared to accept some municipal posts were lost, without referring directly to the results in Ankara or Istanbul.
'If there are any shortcomings, it is our duty to correct them,' Erdogan said. 'Starting tomorrow morning, we will begin our work to identify our shortcomings and make up for them.'

Elections in Turkey: Erdogan's moment of truth? | To the point
Turkey is poised to hold an election that could prove decisive not only for the country’s democracy, but also for Europe and the Middle East. And most especially for the leader who’s been in power for the past 20 years. Recep Tayyip Erdogan is facing his most contested election ever – with a very real chance of defeat. Some voters are put off by the President’s increasingly authoritarian rule but for many, it’s the economy. Corruption, mismanagement and record high inflation are prompting new support for the opposition coalition aligned behind Kemal Kilicdaroglu. So we’re asking: “Elections in Turkey: Erdogan’s moment of truth?”

Talk to Al Jazeera - What is next for Erdogan's AK party?
The AK party has been ruling Turkey for 13 years, but then a stunning defeat came in June.
The movement President Recep Tayyip Erdogan helped create, the Justice and Development Party, also known as the AK party, lost its majority in Parliament, throwing the political system into uncertainty.
This was even more remarkable given what supporters say was a long list of accomplishments:
When Erdogan took over as Prime Minister in 2003, the country carried billions of dollars of debt to the International Monetary Fund. Since then, it has paid off the loans.
The country's infrastructure needed major improvements. Since then, bridges, roads, tunnels and airports have been constructed all across the country.

TRT World - World in Focus: AK Party's Decisive Victory
The AK Party was cruising to victory, even as the ballots were still being counted. And the final results showed that it collected nearly 50 percent of the votes, to equal its success in the 2011 elections. Earlier polls had suggested the AKP would improve its votes by only a couple of points. But the nearly nine percent rise surprised almost everyone.
AK Party given mandate
That rise allowed the AKP to increase the 258 seats it won in the June elections, to 317. And that gives it the mandate to form a single government. The AKP also extended its representation to 78 out of 81 provinces in Turkey and obtained 14 more seats in the country’s east and southeast. With the win guaranteed, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu arrived at the party headquarters in the capital Ankara. There, he gave ...

Erdogan fatigue? Turkish president suffers setbacks in local elections
case of Erdogan fatigue? Turkey's president suffering a rare electoral setback in local elections where even though his name wasn't on the ballot, Recep Tayep Erdogan made the race into a referendum about himself tirelessly out on the campaign trail and yet losing the capital Ankara and locked in a dogfight to keep city hall in his native Istanbul.
The results appear to indicate a growing rift between major cities and the rest of the country - with Erdogan's Islamist-rooted AK Party consolidating its lock on power in the Anatolian heartland and losing ground in urban areas to the moderate opposition while in the southeast, the Kurdish rooted HDP regained towns lost by decree in the crackdown on dissent that followed a failed coup in 2016.
It's not only about the tightening of the screws....

🇹🇷 Will Turkey's election produce a surprise? | Inside Story
Turks go to the polls on Sunday for what are seen as the most crucial elections in Turkish modern history.
For the first time presidential and parliamentary votes take place on the same day. There are six candidates for president. If no one wins more than 50 percent of the vote in Sunday's poll, the top two will be involved in a run-off.
And whoever becomes president will be assuming enhanced powers approved in a referendum last year.
These are not easy times. Turkey's been in a state of emergency since a failed coup attempt in 2016 and the economy's in crisis.
So could there be a surprise?
And what would that mean for Turkey's future?

🇹🇷 Is Turkey's president under threat? | Inside Story
Recep Tayyip Erdogan has dominated politics in Turkey for the past 16 years.
But after winning every election since, his AK Party suffered a setback in Sunday's local elections.
Voters are apparently particularly fed up with what critics say is his increasingly autocratic rule - as well as the falling value of the Turkish lira, rising inflation and higher unemployment.
The Justice and Development party lost control in major cities - including Izmir and the capital Ankara.
Erdogan's challenging the opposition's result there and in Turkey's biggest city Istanbul.
So, after years of consolidating power, how big a shock has he suffered?
And how can he recover?

And, symbolically, Muslim women wearing headscarves no longer have to hide.
When he left his job as prime minister due to his party's term limits, he campaigned for the presidency last year. Erdogan got 52 percent of the vote and became the first popularly elected president of Turkey.
Not satisfied with playing the symbolic role set out in the constitution, he immediately pushed for changes to make the job more powerful.
All of those constitutional changes would have been debated by Parliament around now. But that did not happen - the people voted his party out of power.
After failing to construct a coalition government, Erdogan's former foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu, who succeeded him as prime minister, was forced to admit defeat. So President Erdogan responded by calling for new parliamentary elections in November.
At the same time, there are major security challenges. Attacks by ISIL and the PKK, the Kurdistan Workers' Party, on Turkish soil and a Turkish bombing campaign against PKK and ISIL targets in Syria and Iraq, are already having political effects domestically.
So how will all this play out? Why, exactly, did his party suffer? Will Erdogan pull off a victory in November? And either way, how is all this affecting this country so strategically important to the larger Middle East?
On Talk to Al Jazeera, we are taking the temperature in Turkey with regular voters on both sides - against, and in support of, President Erdogan and his party.

There, he gave the balcony speech, which has become an AKP trademark after each election. Davutoglu also took time to reflect on the results of the last elections, which resulted in a deadlock.
Opposition dealt a blow
One party’s gains were other parties’ losses. On the road to victory, the AK Party took 18 seats from the HDP and four from the CHP. But it was the MHP which suffered the heaviest. In total, it lost 40 seats across 39 electoral districts. That’s almost half the seats it won in the previous elections. And the AKP grabbed 37 of those, while the CHP three. The votes of the HDP also dropped by 21 percent, bringing its seats down from 80 to 59. Again, 18 of those seats went to the AKP, and three to the CHP. The CHP was able to increase its number of seats from t he last elections – but only by two. It lost four seats to the AK Party, but was able to gain three seats each from the MHP and the HDP. But the shift of seats has also resulted in a decline in female representation in the parliament. It’s down from 95 in the previous elections to 81. Less than a week after its sweeping victory at the ballot, the AKP has already suggested what may be next for Turkey. It’s post-election statements that the new government will now focus on.

All the 741 polling centres for the 73 Sabah legislative assembly seats in the state elections closed at 5pm on Saturday.
Some polling centres closed earlier with some even at 2pm or 3pm because they did not have many voters.
The polling process went smoothly for nine and a half hours without any untoward incidents after the polling centres opened at 7.30 am.

case of Erdogan fatigue?
It's not only about the tightening of the screws. Erdogan blames a US-formented plot for the Lira's slide and near-20 percent inflation but many citizens aren't buying it and with an economy in the throes of its first recession in a decade, what's now for Turkey and a democracy where most of the power's been consolidated in one man's hands?

Presenter: Martine Dennis
Guests
Muhittin Ataman - Editor of Insight Turkey and Diretor of the SETA Think Tank Education and Social Policy
Fadi Hakura - Associate Fellow in the Europe Programme at Chatham House
Ozgur Ozdamar - Professor in the Depatment of International Relations at Bilkent University.
