Since leaving political office on January 2, 1990, Young has founded or served in a large number of organizations founded on public policy, political lobbying and international relations, with a special focus on Africa.
Early life
Andrew Young was born March 12, 1932, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Daisy Fuller Young, a school teacher, and Andrew Jackson Young, Sr., a dentist. Young's father hired a professional boxer to teach Andrew and his brother how to fight, so they could defend themselves. In an 1964 interview with author Robert Penn Warren for his book, Who Speaks for the Negro?, Young recalls the tensions of segregation in New Orleans, especially growing up in a fairly well-to-do household. He recalls his parents trying to "compensate for segregation" by providing for their children, yet at the same time being reluctant to help less wealthy black communities in the area. Young graduated from Howard University and earned a divinity degree from Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1955.
Andrew Young (1807–1889) was a Scottish schoolmaster and poet, known as the author of the hymn "There Is a Happy Land".
Life
The second son of David Young, a teacher in Edinburgh, was born at Edinburgh on 23 April 1807. He took the arts and theological classes at Edinburgh University, where he won John Wilson's prize for the best poem on the "Scottish Highlands".
In 1830 Young was appointed by the town council of Edinburgh headmaster of Niddrie Street school, where he taught for eleven years, starting with eighty pupils and leaving with six hundred. In 1840 he became head English master of Madras College, St. Andrews, from which he retired in 1853 to Edinburgh, where he was till his death superintendent of the Greenside parish Sabbath school, being also actively engaged in other philanthropic work. He was found dead in bed on 30 November 1889. His remains were interred in Rosebank Cemetery, Edinburgh.
Works
In 1838 Young wrote a well-known hymn, "There is a happy land", first published in James Gall's "Sacred Songs", and later in hymn-books throughout the world. The words were written to an Indian air which he heard one night played on the piano by a lady. Many of Young's hymns and poems were contributed to periodicals. A collected edition was published in 1876 as The Scottish Highlands and other Poems.
At the 2010 Games, Young finished 14th in the team sprint and 60th in the individual sprint event. For the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2009, he finished 14th in the 4 x 10km relay and 98th in the individual sprint event.
Young took his first top 10 finish in the Cross-Country Skiing World Cup in December 2015, when he finished in ninth at a freestyle sprint competition in Davos, Switzerland. On 19 December 2015 he took Great Britain's first World Cup podium when he finished third in a sprint event in a 2015–16 FIS Cross-Country World Cup event in Toblach, Italy.
Andrew Aldridge Young (born March 23, 1966) was a key staff member in the John Edwards 2008 presidential campaign. Young came to prominence via a scandal in which he claimed paternity of Rielle Hunter's child born on February 27, 2008. John Edwards had admitted a past affair with Hunter, but denied paternity of the baby even though Edwards was in fact the father. Young has since renounced that statement, and Edwards publicly admitted paternity on January 21, 2010.
