Founding of Southern Christian Leadership Conference
Today in Southern labor history, we remember the founding of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a key organization during the civil rights movement.
Following the victory of the Montgomery Bus Boycotts in 1957, 60 Black faith leaders and activists gathered at Ebenezer Church in Atlanta. They joined together to coordinate further action to combat the injustice of white supremacy and Jim Crow throughout the US. Led by Martin Luther King Jr. the organization relied on the capacity of the Black church to support the organizing efforts. Martin Luther King Jr. said the initial SCLC conference was called because “we have no moral choice, before God, but to delve deeper into the struggle.”

Martin Luther King, Jr: Crash Course Black American History #36
Today we're going to learn about perhaps the best-known leader in the Civil Rights Era, Martin Luther King, Jr. From his rise to notoriety during the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, his leadership of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the March on Washington in 1963, his work toward the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts of the mid-1960s, and his assassination in 1968, Dr. King is very broadly known. But maybe he isn't that well understood. Like many extremely famous people, Martin Luther King can sometimes be drawn as a bit of a flat character, and his ideas can be reduced to platitudes. Today we'll try to give you a fuller picture of the man and leader he was.

They joined together to coordinate further action to combat the injustice of white supremacy and Jim Crow throughout the US. Martin Luther King Jr. said the initial SCLC conference was called because “we have no moral choice, before God, but to delve deeper into the struggle.”
The SCLC integrated a new strategy into organizing in the South. Unlike contemporary organizations like the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee or the NAACP, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference did not seek members but instead made it their goal to coordinate activities between organizations and knit together separate organizations into a more focused movement.
The SCLC focused its energies on registering disenfranchised Black people to vote and campaigns to create jobs for Black workers in Atlanta and Chicago. At an SCLC staff retreat In 1967, Martin Luther King Jr. announced the initial plan for the Poor People’s Campaign and their march and tent city in Washington DC. However, just a year later, in 1968, Martin Luther King Jr would be assassinated, dealing an awful blow to the organization.
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference offers us a good reminder of the importance of organization. The power of the people lies in our ability to stand with one another and not be deterred by big corporations and powerful governments.
