Andrew O'Connor's Joke Machine (1987)
I may not be looking hard enough, but I can't find a single trace of this show anywhere else on the whole of YouTube (or most of the rest of the internet, for that matter). I used to love this programme, with its quick-fire gags, Charles the oh-so-futuristic talking supercomputer, and the odd bit of magic thrown in. I wonder how kids today would react to a show like this. Either way, it's all good fun, and a pleasant surprise at the end of a VHS tape that I thought was my Dad's. I'm reliably informed in the comments that the broadcast date was Tuesday, 6th October, 1987.
I'd forgotten the theme music, but as soon as I heard it it was instantly familiar. How come no-one does jolly sing-along intros any more? Don't miss the silly credits at the end, too.
For good measure, I've left in what...

I'd forgotten the theme music, but as soon as I heard it it was instantly familiar. How come no-one does jolly sing-along intros any more? Don't miss the silly credits at the end, too.
For good measure, I've left in what I have on my tape of the CITV in-vision continuity from Network Control, featuring Gary (of Gary and Debbie fame - though where Debbie's gone is a mystery lost in the mists of time). Before the show he holds up something a viewer has sent in (I wonder if kids still do that sort of thing...), and afterwards he tells us to stay tuned for Bellamy's Bugle. Sadly, I didn't. I don't actually remember much about that one, apart from David Bellamy and his computer. I wonder who won the Hue and Cry record draw...
Incidentally, although Andrew O'Connor is probably best known (if he's recognised at all) for being a 90s gameshow presenter, from these comedy beginnings he went on to form the production company responsible for the masterpiece that is Peep Show. Believe it or not.
(Please remember that this is an off-air VHS recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. That said, if you are a copyright holder and object, please don't hesitate to contact me.)

Discover the Voice behind Batman's Iconic Character!
For nearly three decades, voiceover actor Kevin Conroy has been the voice of (animated) Batman. He has voiced almost every iteration of Batman in cartoons, animated movies or video games. Conroy began his career as a theater actor, attending Julliard, a prestigious acting school in New York City. He studied alongside heavyweights Robin Williams, Kelsey Grammer and more. Conroy would go on to perform on Broadway and off-Broadway when his agent called him about auditioning for the role of Batman in a new animated show. During the audition Kevin was able to use his theater background to manifest one of the most memorable voices in cartoon history.

Amazing Merrion Square, Dublin, home of Oscar Wilde, WB Yeats, Daniel O'Connell and now Father Ted!
Merrion Square is perhaps best known as having the address where the famous Irish author Oscar Wilde was born. His family home is now the American College in Dublin, and it sits in this grand Georgian square dating from 1752. All the 18th Century houses in the square have survived and the square also prestigiously has the National Gallery, National History Museum and the grounds of Leinster House (the Oireachtas or government of Ireland).
A lot of work goes into these videos. You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers.

Cheers.

As we enter the park we see the ‘Dandy’ himself, the infamous Oscar Wilde, immortalised in a sculpture created in 1997 by artist Danny Osborne. The sculpture was commissioned by the Guinness Ireland Group. What’s amazing here is that by 1997, when this sculpture was revealed, Wilde had already been dead for 97 years. You might ask why Dublin took so long to commemorate its most famous son. The fact is that Ireland’s Catholic conservatism in the 20th Century would have frowned upon an earlier attempt to honour one of the most notorious gay men in Irish history – even if he happened to be one of the greatest authors and intellectuals the world has seen.
Our next stop on the tour is the commemoration of Bernardo O’Higgans, the Chilean Independence leader who freed Chile from Spanish rule. His father, as the name might suggest, was born in Ireland, in Sligo in fact, and he became a Spanish officer and a Governor of Chile.
Perhaps of more interest to a contemporary Irish audience is an interesting looking chair, in remembrance of the actor, satirist and comedian Dermot Morgan, who you might know better as Father Ted, from the comedy sitcom of the same name. The chair, entitled The Joker’s Chair, is in fact the work of Irish sculpture Catherine Greene and was funded by RTE, the Irish National broadcasting station. It’s perhaps ironic that this memorial to the comedian who satarised the Catholic church sits in a park that was purchased by the Church in 1930 as a prospective site for a new Catholic cathedral.
Continuing our circumnavigation we can see how empty this park is as compared with its relative, St Stephen’s Green, which is only a short walk away. Stephen's Green is awash with tourists at this time of day and yet Merrian square seems to offer genuine respite from hectic urban Dublin.
Both WB Yeats and the Irish Patriot Daniel O’Connell both also lived in Merrion Square, and a property on the corner of the south eastern side used to house the British Embassy in Ireland. However, after the 'Bloody Sunday' killings by British soldiers in N. Ireland in 1972, a crowd of over 20 thousand people converged here and the building was burned down.
Merrion Square is also a more open space, free of the ponds and follies that we associate with St Stephen’s green. Maybe check our our St Stephen’s green video to make a proper comparison.

The next commemoration we meet on our journey around the park is that of the Irish/American sculptor Andrew O’Connor – 'The Victims'. The sculptor in fact lived for the last 7 months of his life in Merrion Square and so it is fitting that this war monument is installed here in the park. It shows three figures, a dead soldier, a wife and a mother, with the inscription, “Naked you came into the world”
Further along we have another war memorial, this time in the form of a pyramid and dedicated to the defence forces who died serving the state. It was designed by the artist Brian King and depicts members of the Army, Navy, Air Corps and Reserves standing over an eternal flame.
