History Of Spain (and Portugal) PART 1: Ancient Iberia and the Visigoths
The History of Spain (and Portugal) is long and wide spanning one,. From the Americas all the way to Japan. But instead of an Hour long documentery I made a very overly fancy PowerPoint summary of it. Human History begins on the Iberian Peninsula much earlier than the Reconquest or the colonization of the New World. So in the first Part I’ll talk about Ancient Iberia and the back and forth between Carthage and Rome. The Conquest of the Suebi and Visigoths.Images used are mostlydrawn by me, except for these ones.

Who Lived In Spain Before the Romans? | Iron Age Iberia c. 1000 - 300 BC
Spain's etymology is ultimately derived from the Latin Hispania, and all the languages of the Iberian Peninsula are derived from Latin, with the exception of Basque. But what about the people who lived in Spain before the Romans invaded?

A Short History of Hispania
In this episode Steve from the excellent History of the Papacy Podcast guides us back into Neolithic Iberia and goes through the overall history of what would become known as Hispania from the first populations to the Celts, Visigoths, Basques, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and etc, we watch a general overview of Hispania from its geography to its very complex history. With the coming of Rome and the fall of Carthage to the collapse of Rome to the barbarian invasions and kingdoms this episode leaves off with the arrival of Islamic expansion into Hispania while also touching on those who resisted and accepted Islamic rule. Of course, this is just the beginning of the story.

The History of Iberia: Every Year
From around 700 BCE, Celtic tribes began to migrate to Iberia. They came into contact with the Romans, who ruled the entire peninsula for over four centuries until the late 300s CE. They were replaced with various Germanic kingdoms, who were in turn replaced by the Islamic Caliphate. What followed was a gradual reconquest of the area, which had been completed by 1492. After a strengthening of the union of Castile and Aragon in 1516, Iberia took a form roughly similar to today.

The Turdetani: Ancient Iberian Civilization Ep1
Ancient History, I hope some of you missed it. I sure did.
The Turdetani, or the Turds as I like to call them, were the traders and economy driven civilization of Ancient Iberia. You will be surprised of how they took advantage of their natural resources and how they interacted with the Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans. Maybe not the latter since they eventually got ass kicked by them.
Enjoy!

Falcata - The Feared Sword of Iberian Celts #shorts
Watch the full video here: 👉 https://youtu.be/6hU1-GDdqfQ
In Iberia, the Romans faced Celts who wielded a different kind of sword - the falcata. This was a large, inward-curving, single-bladed (or double bladed towards the tip) sword. It is believed that it was developed from the ancient Greek kopis.
The falcata could deliver a very powerful strike, something similar to an axe, but with slashing prowess of a conventional sword. Roman writers describe how falcata could split both shield and helmet. In response to this, the Romans redesigned their shields and armor for better protection. It is even indicated that the development of gladius - Roman shortsword, was a direct reaction to the battlefield experience of facing falcata.
The ancient manufacture of falcata was also quite fascinating...

Today we are killing 3 birds with one stone and talking about 3 Iberian tribes. I hope you will like it. This has been the hardest to research for so far. Not many people like to differentiate between the Iberians and the Celtiberians so I had to go back and forth a lot. Adding to the fact there was little to no info on the Vascones and the Aquitanians.
To add insult to injury, I felt a little sick while recording this.

Enjoy!

The ancient manufacture of falcata was also quite fascinating, as described by Diodorus of Sicily. The Celts allegedly buried plates of iron in the ground and left them there for around three years, during which time they partially corroded. They would discard any weak metal and reforge the remainder through Celtic method of pattern welding - the practice of forming a blade from several metal pieces of different composition. The blades were forge-welded together and formed in a way to create a pattern which made the blade noticeably sturdier.
