Anaximander
Anaximander of Miletus is the second Greek philosopher we know of, and he had some astoundingly ambitious ideas about the natural world that far exceed those of his predecessor and master, Thales. In this video, Dr. Foxwede goes through his fantastical contributions to human knowledge: a cosmology of fiery tyres, an early theory of evolution, a prose work with a theory of everything (the first of its kind in the Greek world), and the first well-preserved attempt at philosophical argumentation. From all this, it is clear that Anaximander is a monumental thinker of archaic Greece, and certainly the most important philosopher from Miletus out of his three contemporaries. Although you might disagree; well then, clearly incommensurable standards are at play. Never mind.

Introduction to Thales, Anaximenes, and Anaximander
In this lecture we investigate the ideas of the first three Presocratics, who are referred to as the Milesians: Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes. In particular, we will explain how they were in search of the arche, or the underlying source and origin of the world. Furthermore, we will show how the Milesians were engaged in the same search which modern theoretical physicists are engaged in today.

Here we look at the second Pre-Socratic philosopher: Anaximander.
A fascinating philosopher and scientist from Miletus, who had some interesting things to say about Thales' quest for the ultimate "stuff" the world was made off.

Carlo Rovelli presents Anaximander and the Nature of Science
This event took place on the 23rd of February 2023. The information below is correct as of the publication date.
The theoretical physicist and bestselling author Carlo Rovelli talks about his entirely original reading of the little known ancient Greek philosopher Anaximander which puts this early thinker on a par with Newton, Galileo and Einstein and asserts his foundational influence on the history of western thought.
In the 6th century BCE, Anaximander’s insights paved the way for cosmology, physics, geography, meteorology and biology. He not only conceived for the first time that the Earth is a rock, suspended in space, but also that animals evolve, that storms and earthquakes are natural (not supernatural), proposed the cycle of water, and drew the first map of the known world.

He not only conceived for the first time that the Earth is a rock, suspended in space, but also that animals evolve, that storms and earthquakes are natural (not supernatural), proposed the cycle of water, and drew the first map of the known world. Above all he understood that progress is made by the endless search for knowledge.
Carlo Rovelli’s Anaximander and the Nature of Science, his first and still favourite book, is now available in English. The author will be signing copies on the night.

Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks is one of the more obscure texts in Friedrich Nietzsche’s corpus. There are many good reasons for this: it is unfinished, and ends abruptly; it was never published; and it concerns subject matter that is not as immediately accessible as Nietzsche’s more popular writings. You will not find his major concepts in this work – such as the will to power, or the critique of metaphysics - except insofar as those ideas appear in the background, inchoate, unnamed… not yet fully formed. In Nietzsche’s interpretation of the Pre-Platonic philosophers of Ancient Greece, we find the starting place for his later philosophical career. The inspiration for many of those great ideas, can arguably be found in his exegesis of these extraordinary figures from the Hellenic world, from the 6th to the 4th century BC. In this series we’ll consider Nietzsche’s view of Thales, Anaximander, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Anaxagoras, Empedocles & Democritus.
