In chemistry, an amphoteric compound is a molecule or ion that can react both as an acid as well as a base. The word is derived from the Greek word amphoteroi (ἀμφότεροι) meaning "both". Many metals (such as copper, zinc, tin, lead, aluminium, and beryllium) form amphoteric oxides or hydroxides. Amphoterism depends on the oxidation state of the oxide.
Ampholytes are amphoteric molecules that contain both acidic and basic groups and will exist mostly as zwitterions in a certain range of pH. The pH at which the average charge is zero is known as the molecule's isoelectric point.
Ampholytes are used to establish a stable pH gradient for use in isoelectric focusing.

What are amphoteric molecules? II Amphoteric II Water is amphoteric
A species that has the potential to act both as an acid and as a base according to Brønsted-Lowry Theory is said to be amphoteric.
eg: Water
As a chameleon can change its colour based on the surrounding, an amphoteric molecule can either act as an acid or base based on the medium.
Water molecule has one lone pair of electrons, and thus it can accept a proton (H+) and act as a Base
It can also donate its own proton, and act as an Acid
You can remember it as (CL) AB- i.e. If proton is accepted it’s a base, if proton is donated its an acid
An example of water acting as a base would be the reaction with hydrochloric acid, where water molecule accepts a proton, i.e. hydrogen atom to form hydrogen carbonate and chloride ion
If (CL) water reacts with ammonia it can donate one proton to form ...
