LIVER FUNCTION TESTS (LFTs) EXPLAINED
Liver function tests (LFTs or LFs), also referred to as a hepatic panel, are groups of blood tests that provide information about the state of a patient's liver. Liver function tests check the levels of certain enzymes and proteins in your blood. Levels that are higher or lower than normal can indicate liver problems. Some common liver function tests include:
Alanine transaminase (ALT). ALT is an enzyme found in the liver that helps convert proteins into energy for the liver cells. When the liver is damaged, ALT is released into the bloodstream and levels increase.
Aspartate transaminase (AST):
AST is an enzyme that helps metabolize amino acids. Like ALT, AST is normally present in blood at low levels. An increase in AST levels may indicate liver da...

Liver function tests, also called hepatic panel, are blood tests used to monitor liver function and damage. These tests provide insights into several aspects of liver health, notably:
- the liver’s ability to synthesize enzymes and proteins,
- the liver’s ability to process bilirubin and secrete bile,
- and the extent of liver damage.
Abnormal liver function test results do not always indicate liver disease. Some abnormalities are transient; or they may result from different, non-hepatic causes.
The synthetic function of the liver can be assessed based on its ability to produce plasma proteins, such as albumin and coagulation factors. Serum albumin levels FALL with all liver diseases. However, low serum albumin may also result from low protein intake, malabsorption or abnormal loss of proteins in urine.
Prothrombin time, PT, or pro time test, measures the time the blood takes to clot. A decline in liver function leads to less coagulation factors produced and delays coagulation time. However, a high PT may also indicate a bleeding disorder, vitamin K deficiency, or use of blood-thinning medications, such as warfarin.
When liver cells are injured, their content, including liver enzymes, are leaked into the bloodstream. The levels of these enzymes can be measured to assess the extent of liver damage. Two enzymes are usually included in a hepatic panel: aspartate transaminase, AST, and alanine transaminase, ALT; both are involved in protein metabolism in the liver. AST and ALT are present at high concentrations in the liver, but they are also found in a number of other tissues. ALT is more sensitive and specific for liver damage than AST. AST and ALT elevations may also result from non-hepatic causes.
Bilirubin is a water-insoluble product of normal heme breakdown. Bilirubin is transported to the liver loosely bound to albumin. The liver converts bilirubin into a water-soluble form to be secreted into bile. Accumulation of bilirubin in the blood indicates problems with biliary function. High levels of bilirubin give the skin and the whites of the eyes a yellowish color known as jaundice.
Besides bilirubin, two enzymes are measured for biliary function: alkaline phosphatase, ALP, and gamma-glutamyltransferase, GGT. Both enzymes are found in the tiny bile ducts, called canaliculi, of the liver; but they are also present in several other tissues. Damage to the biliary tract releases these enzymes into the bloodstream. Elevated GGT is more specific for biliary disease compared to ALP. ALP elevations may also be due to a number of non-hepatic causes.

Liver function tests, also called hepatic panel, are blood tests used to measure liver function and damage. Abnormal test results do not always indicate liver disease. Some abnormalities are transient, they resolve without symptoms within a few weeks. Others may result from non-hepatic causes.
Two major functions of the liver are evaluated: the liver’s ability to produce blood plasma proteins, such as albumin and blood coagulation factors; and the liver’s ability to process bilirubin, a blood waste product.
Normal albumin level in the blood is between 40 and 60 grams per liter. A lower than normal albumin level may be a sign of liver disease. However, low serum albumin may also result from low protein diets, poor absorption of proteins, or abnormal loss of proteins in urine.
Because the liver synthesizes most of the factors required for blood clotting, reduced liver function leads to less coagulation factors produced and delayed coagulation. Prothrombin time, PT, or pro time test, measures the time the blood takes to clot. Normal PT is between 10.9 and 12.5 seconds. A higher than normal PT means the blood takes longer to clot, and may indicate liver damage. However, patients with bleeding disorders, vitamin K deficiency, and those who take blood-thinning medications, such as warfarin, may also have high PT without having liver problems.
Bilirubin is a waste product of red blood cell breakdown. Bilirubin is transported to the liver where it is processed and secreted into bile. Reduced liver function leads to accumulation of bilirubin in the blood, which gives the skin and the whites of the eyes a yellowish color known as jaundice. Plasma bilirubin level is increased in liver diseases and in some types of anemia.
When liver cells are injured, their content, including liver enzymes, are leaked into the bloodstream. The levels of these enzymes can be measured to assess the extent of liver damage. The higher their levels in the blood, the greater the extent of liver damage. However, because some of these enzymes are also present in other tissues, abnormal results may be due to causes outside the liver.
Four enzymes are usually included in a hepatic panel, two of which are involved in protein metabolism: aspartate transaminase, AST, and alanine transaminase, ALT. The other two - alkaline phosphatase, ALP, and gamma-glutamyltransferase, GGT, are components of bile ducts and involved in bile secretion. Between ALT and AST, ALT is more sensitive and specific for liver damage. Both AST and ALT normal values are higher in men than in women; their normal range is also higher in obesity. Between GGT and ALP, GGT is more specific for biliary disease. ALP is also present in bones and placenta, and its normal level increases during childhood growth, as well as pregnancy. ALP elevations may also be due to a number of non-hepatic illnesses including bone disease, chronic renal failure, congestive heart failure, cancers, and infection or inflammation.

In this meeting, a participant named Victoria discusses her recent issues with diarrhea while on a keto-carnivore diet. The host, Stephen, explains that this is a common side effect during the adaptation process and advises Victoria to reduce her fat intake and add electrolytes. Another participant, Mike, shares his conversation with his son's pediatrician who said keto can inhibit growth in children. The host explains that this is a common misconception and that ketones are beneficial for brain function and healing.
Then the group talk about treating fatty liver disease by healing the liver using fat, and eating a diet high in proteins and animal fats. They also recommend consuming electrolytes, specifically potassium, magnesium, and sodium, in equal ratios to help with muscle cramps or tightness. They discuss how calcium is not good on its own, and that supplements may prevent the absorption of needed nutrients.
Someone asked whether coffee is good for helping with fat burning on a ketogenic diet. The host said that it can help as a fat mobilizer, but excessive caffeine consumption can increase cortisol and adrenaline, which can spike insulin and pull you out of ketosis. Regarding babies being in ketosis, there is no danger to growth from being in ketosis on a ketogenic or carnivore diet. Babies are born in the metabolic state of ketosis, and their brains prefer ketones as the primary energy source. The fear of stunting growth comes from the potential lack of mTOR activation, which is necessary for growth. However, mTOR can be activated through protein intake, and it is not necessary to also consume carbohydrates to grow.

06 - What is a Function in Math? (Learn Function Definition, Domain & Range in Algebra)
Get more lessons like this at http://www.MathTutorDVD.com.
Here you will learn what a function is in math, the definition of a function, and why they are important.
Functions have applications in algebra, calculus, science, and engineering. We first begin by describing a function as a mathematical machine that takes input numbers "x" and computes output numbers "f(x)".
We then describe the input numbers "x" as being the domain of the function, while the output numbers f(x) are the range of the function. We will plot several functions including linear functions, quadratic functions, cubic functions, and more.
