Like many heroes of Greek myths, the philosopher Hippasus was rumored to have been mortally punished by the gods. But what was his crime? Did he murder guests or disrupt a sacred ritual? No, Hippasus's transgression was mathematically proving the hitherto unprovable. Ganesh Pai describes the history and math behind irrational numbers.

Rational, Irrational and Real Numbers
At some point you are going to learn to classify and sort numbers as 'rational', 'irrational' and 'real'.
The traditional math definition can be a bit of a stumbling block, so I take you through what it means here in this vid, along with examples so it sticks. And the great news is that you'll totally be able to manage this stuff! At the end of the vid you'll find a handy little T-chart (perfect for your math notebook) which will be a 10 second revision tool in time for exams.
Please hit that like button, and subscribe if you haven't already.
Summary
0:00 - 2:00 making sense of the definition and rational numbers examples
2:01 - 4:05 irrational numbers
4:06 real numbers

What are Irrational Numbers? | Number System
In this whiteboard animations tutorial, I will teach you the concept of irrational numbers and representation of irrational numbers on a number line. Also, you will learn how to recognize irrational numbers easily.
Irrational numbers are those numbers which we can not write in "P by q form".
For example, square root of 8 is an irrational number, because we can't write it in "p by q form".
Also, square root of 2, square root of 3 and square root of 5 are irrational numbers.
To learn more about irrational numbers, watch this animated lecture till the end.

What are the Types of Numbers? Real vs. Imaginary, Rational vs. Irrational
We've mentioned in passing some different ways to classify numbers, like rational, irrational, real, imaginary, integers, fractions, and more. If this is confusing, then take a look at this handy-dandy guide to the taxonomy of numbers! It turns out we can use a hierarchical scheme just like we do for biological organisms or fundamental particles, and it's really useful for understanding the properties of different types of numbers.

Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. Some of the topics include linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, systems of equations, factoring expressions, quadratic expressions, exponents, functions, and ratios.
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

In this whiteboard animations tutorial, I will teach you the concept of irrational numbers and representation of irrational numbers on a number line. Also, you will learn how to recognize irrational numbers easily.
Irrational numbers are those numbers which we can not write in "P by q form".
For example, square root of 8 is an irrational number, because we can't write it in "p by q form".
Also, square root of 2, square root of 3 and square root of 5 are irrational numbers.
To learn more about irrational numbers, watch this animated lecture till the end.
