Founded in 1970 from the New Ulster Movement, the Alliance Party originally represented moderate and non-sectarian unionism. However, over time, particularly in the 1990s, it moved towards neutrality on the Union, and has come to represent wider liberal and non-sectarian concerns. It opposes the consociational power-sharing mandated by the Good Friday Agreement as deepening the sectarian divide, and, in the Northern Ireland Assembly, it is designated as neither unionist nor Irish nationalist, but 'Other'.
The Alliance Party started off as an ad hoc and temporary electoral arrangement between the local branches of UMNO and MCA to contest the Kuala Lumpur municipal election in 1952. The UMNO-MCA candidates won in 9 of the 12 seats contested, and their success led a firmer association between the two parties. The alliance was then joined by MIC in 1954.
In 1955, in the first general election for the Federal Legislative Council in what was then the British protectorate of the Federation of Malaya, the UMNO-MCA-MIC Alliance successfully gained the great majority of seats available for contest, winning 51 of the 52 seats contested. It formally registered as a political organisation on 30 October 1957.
The Alliance was a left-wing political party in New Zealand. It was formed in 1991, and was influential in the 1990s, but has since declined and has no representation in Parliament. It suffered a major setback after Jim Anderton, the party's leader, left the party in 2002, taking several of the party's MPs. After the remaining MPs lost their seats in the 2002 election, some commentators predicted the demise of the party. The Alliance stood candidates in the 2005 election but won less than 1% of the party vote. The Alliance contested Auckland City Council elections under the City Vision banner, in concert with the New Zealand Labour Party and Green Party. The Alliance ran 15 electorate candidates and a total of 30 candidates on the party list in the 2008 election, increasing its party vote marginally from 2005.
Alliance Party (in Swedish: Allianspartiet) is a political party in Sweden. The party was formed in the mid-1990s, as a splinter group of the right-wing populist New Democracy. Initially the party had branches in Skåne, Värmland and Östergötland, but its activities has been largely centered in Skåne.
In the 2002 elections the party won two seats in the municipal council of Burlöv.
In 2006 the party contested municipal elections in Skåne, as well as the parliamentary election though in the latter case they failed to win any seats.
The island's geography comprises relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain, with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island has lush vegetation, a product of its mild but changeable climate which avoids extremes in temperature. Thick woodlands covered the island until the Middle Ages. As of 2013, the amount of land that is wooded in Ireland is about 11% of the total, compared with a European average of 35%. There are 26 extant mammal species native to Ireland. The Irish climate is very moderated and classified as oceanic. As a result, winters are milder than expected for such a northerly area. However, summers are cooler than those in Continental Europe. Rainfall and cloud cover are abundant.
Alliance Party Leader: British government 'have used Northern Ireland as a bit of a play-thing'
Naomi Long, leader of Northern Ireland's Alliance Party, was scathing about the behaviour of the British government, saying that they "have used Northern Ireland as a bit of a play-thing when it comes to maintaining a grievance with Europe".
She said Northern Ireland was a useful lever for the British government but such behaviour was damaging for communities in Northern Ireland.

The Future of Northern Ireland Politics: The Alliance Party Perspective

Northern Ireland’s governing institutions have been at a political impasse since the DUP collapsed Stormont in February 2022, and the Windsor Framework has, thus far, failed to bring about the restoration of the Assembly and Executive as both London and Brussels had hoped. Since the most recent collapse of Stormont, the Alliance Party has made electoral gains at both Assembly and local government level, and is now firmly established as the third largest party in Northern Irish politics. In her keynote address to the IIEA, Naomi Long, leader of the Alliance Party, discusses her party’s perspective on the Windsor Framework, the political stalemate at Stormont, and the need for reform of the structures set up in the Good Friday Agreement to allow parties designated “other” (neither unionist nor nationalist) to play a more equal role in Northern Irish politics.
About the Speaker:
Naomi Long MLA first joined Belfast City Council as an Alliance Party councillor in 2001 and was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2003. After serving as Lord Mayor of Belfast, she became the first Alliance MP elected to Westminster, as the MP for East Belfast in 2010. In 2016, Ms Long returned to the Northern Ireland Assembly as MLA for East Belfast and shortly afterwards she became Leader of Alliance. She has presided over Alliance’s most successful elections, with the 2022 Assembly election seeing the party’s representation more than double, and the 2019 European poll seeing her elected as Alliance’s first MEP. Following Brexit and the collapse of devolution, Ms Long returned to the Assembly in January 2020, serving as Justice Minister.

The Alliance Party in Northern Ireland prides itself on its non partisan stance on both a United Ireland and the Union (UK). However as we get closer to the point where a border poll is called, does the party need to 'pick a side'?

Brexit is not an Orange versus Green issue and Alliance is not an orange or green party.
Each one of us will be affected by the decisions taken in Westminster. That's why we need to demand better.
On December 12, vote Alliance X
Northern Ireland Situation War, within a single nation No one thinks of it as war That's what television's for Embroidering reality, with clichés and ??? We'll call this war the 'troubles' Confuse the masses with initials (IRA, UVA, UVA, IRA, ILA, IUC) There's so many sides involved And no one thinks it can be solved Avoidance of the history of suppression, death and misery Will leave the people, ignorant of everything that's relevant So who is who defending, and who's protecting who? Until you know the answers, don't pretend you do do do do don't pretend you do! So we see the brave young soldiers And we read about the murders Then we place our weak opinions On what the papers tell us But telling half the truth is as bad as telling lies For a war to keep continuing There has to be two sides! But who is who defending, who's protecting who? Until you know the answers, don't pretend you do do do do don't pretend you do! Supporting one side or the other Is really nothing more Than saying there is no solution But to carry on the war And both the IRA and the army Are equally to blame In general terms of violence You know they're doing just, they're doing just, they're doing just the same Doing just the same So who is who defending, and who's protecting who? Until you know the answers, don't pretend you do do do do don't pretend you do!
