The Alliance Party, was the ruling political party in Fiji from 1966 to 1987. Founded in the early 1960s, its leader was Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, the founding father of the modern Fijian nation. Widely seen as the political vehicle of the traditional Fijian chiefs, the Alliance Party also commanded considerable support among the Europeans and other ethnic minorities, who, although comprising only 3-4% of Fiji's population, were over represented in the parliament (with a third of the seats before 1973, and a sixth thereafter, allocated to them). Indo-Fijians were less supportive, but the Fijian-European block vote kept the Alliance Party in power for more than twenty years.
Formation of the Alliance Party
The formation of the Alliance Party was the direct result of the call, in November 1965, by the Governor, SirDerek Jakeway, "for leaders of imagination, who have the interests of all the people of Fiji truly at heart, to build political alliances with the object of contesting elections on a common racial platform and then, if they win a majority of seats, forming a broad based administration which will be effectively self-governing". In 1965, there already existed in Fiji political organisations which represented various interest groups (but no other political party like the Federation Party). These were the Fijian Association, which was formed in 1956 to "counter the Indian demand for political reform", the National Congress of Fiji formed by Indians opposed to the Federation Party, the General Electors Association representing the Europeans and Part-Europeans, the Suva Rotuman Association, the Rotuman Convention, the Chinese Association, the All-Fiji Muslim Political Front, the Fiji Minority Party and the Tongan Organization. On March 12, 1966, all these organisations, together with Vijay R. Singh, came together under the leadership of Ratu Kamisese Mara to form the Alliance Party.
Founded in 1970 from the New Ulster Movement, the Alliance Party originally represented moderate and non-sectarian unionism. However, over time, particularly in the 1990s, it moved towards neutrality on the Union, and has come to represent wider liberal and non-sectarian concerns. It opposes the consociational power-sharing mandated by the Good Friday Agreement as deepening the sectarian divide, and, in the Northern Ireland Assembly, it is designated as neither unionist nor Irish nationalist, but 'Other'.
The Alliance Party started off as an ad hoc and temporary electoral arrangement between the local branches of UMNO and MCA to contest the Kuala Lumpur municipal election in 1952. The UMNO-MCA candidates won in 9 of the 12 seats contested, and their success led a firmer association between the two parties. The alliance was then joined by MIC in 1954.
In 1955, in the first general election for the Federal Legislative Council in what was then the British protectorate of the Federation of Malaya, the UMNO-MCA-MIC Alliance successfully gained the great majority of seats available for contest, winning 51 of the 52 seats contested. It formally registered as a political organisation on 30 October 1957.
Fiji is an archipelago of more than 332 islands, of which 110 are permanently inhabited, and more than 500 islets, amounting to a total land area of about 18,300 square kilometres (7,100sqmi). The farthest island is Ono-i-Lau. The two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, account for 87% of the population of almost 860,000. The capital and largest city, Suva, is on Viti Levu. About three-quarters of Fijians live on Viti Levu's coasts, either in Suva or in smaller urban centres like Nadi (tourism) or Lautoka (sugar cane industry). Viti Levu's interior is sparsely inhabited due to its terrain.
Fiji (Fiji Is Just ImageJ) is an open source image processing package based on ImageJ.
Fiji's main purpose is to provide a distribution of ImageJ with many bundled plugins. Fiji features an integrated updating system and aims to provide users with a coherent menu structure, extensive documentation in the form of detailed algorithm descriptions and tutorials, and the ability to avoid the need to install multiple components from different sources.
Fiji is also targeted at developers, through the use of a version control system, an issue tracker, dedicated development channels and a rapid-prototyping infrastructure in the form of a script editor which supports BeanShell, Jython, JRuby and other scripting languages, as well as Just-In-Time Java development.
Plugins
Many plugins exist for ImageJ, with a wide range of applications, but also a wide range of quality.
Further, some plugins require specific versions of ImageJ, specific versions of third-party libraries, or additional Java components such as the Java compiler or Java3D.

The Future of Northern Ireland Politics: The Alliance Party Perspective
Northern Ireland’s governing institutions have been at a political impasse since the DUP collapsed Stormont in February 2022, and the Windsor Framework has, thus far, failed to bring about the restoration of the Assembly and Executive as both London and Brussels had hoped. A look at Democratic Alliance's history as the party prepares for its Federal Congress
All eyes will be on the Democratic Alliance's two-day Federal Congress this weekend. The country's second-largest political party will elect its new leadership as it prepares for the 2024 general elections. In the last national elections, the party suffered a setback as its electoral share declined. It hopes to use this conference as a launch pad for the 2024 polls, where it hopes to unseat the governing ANC, which will be in power for the third decade next year.

Northern Ireland’s governing institutions have been at a political impasse since the DUP collapsed Stormont in February 2022, and the Windsor Framework has, thus far, failed to bring about the restoration of the Assembly and Executive as both London and Brussels had hoped. Since the most recent collapse of Stormont, the Alliance Party has made electoral gains at both Assembly and local government level, and is now firmly established as the third largest party in Northern Irish politics. In her keynote address to the IIEA, Naomi Long, leader of the Alliance Party, discusses her party’s perspective on the Windsor Framework, the political stalemate at Stormont, and the need for reform of the structures set up in the Good Friday Agreement to allow parties designated “other” (neither unionist nor nationalist) to play a more equal role in Northern Irish politics.
About the Speaker:
Naomi Long MLA first joined Belfast City Council as an Alliance Party councillor in 2001 and was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2003. After serving as Lord Mayor of Belfast, she became the first Alliance MP elected to Westminster, as the MP for East Belfast in 2010. In 2016, Ms Long returned to the Northern Ireland Assembly as MLA for East Belfast and shortly afterwards she became Leader of Alliance. She has presided over Alliance’s most successful elections, with the 2022 Assembly election seeing the party’s representation more than double, and the 2019 European poll seeing her elected as Alliance’s first MEP. Following Brexit and the collapse of devolution, Ms Long returned to the Assembly in January 2020, serving as Justice Minister.

Where Should The Alliance Party Stand On A United Ireland?
The Alliance Party in Northern Ireland prides itself on its non partisan stance on both a United Ireland and the Union (UK). However as we get closer to the point where a border poll is called, does the party need to 'pick a side'?

Naomi Long, leader of Northern Ireland's Alliance Party, was scathing about the behaviour of the British government, saying that they "have used Northern Ireland as a bit of a play-thing when it comes to maintaining a grievance with Europe".
She said Northern Ireland was a useful lever for the British government but such behaviour was damaging for communities in Northern Ireland.

This election is about change. It's about removing the Tories and the local MPs who propped them up and voted with them on some of their most destructive policies.
Alliance is leading that change.
This election is the best opportunity in a generation to build a positive, progressive, inclusive society.
On May 5 vote Alliance and #TogetherWeCan make it happen. #AE22

The Alliance Party in Northern Ireland prides itself on its non partisan stance on both a United Ireland and the Union (UK). However as we get closer to the point where a border poll is called, does the party need to 'pick a side'?

Leader of the Alliance Party Naomi Long has expressed her deep frustration as Stormont's paralysis continues. She said, "it's a shameful day for the DUP."
She also expressed her anger for not being able to challenge Jeffrey Donaldson, DUP leader, in person. He is still yet to take his seat .

Each one of us will be affected by the decisions taken in Westminster. That's why we need to demand better.
