Pakula turned journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's best-selling account of their Watergate investigation into one of the hit films of Bicentennial year 1976. While researching a story about a botched 1972 burglary of Democratic Party headquarters at the Watergate apartment complex, green Washington Post reporters/rivals Woodward (Robert Redford, who also exec produced) and Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) stumble on a possible connection between the burglars and a White House staffer. With the circumspect approval of executive editor Ben Bradlee (Jason Robards), the pair digs deeper. Aided by a guilt-ridden turncoat bookkeeper (Jane Alexander) and the vital if cryptic guidance of Woodward's mystery source, Deep Throat (Hal Holbrook), Woodward and Bernstein "follow the money" all the way to the top of the Nixon administration. Despite Deep Throat's warnings that their lives are in danger, and the reluctance of older Post editors, Woodward and Bernstein are determined to get out the story of the crime and its presidential cover-up. Once Bradlee is convinced, the final teletype impassively taps out the historically explosive results.

A film classic based on Washington Post reporters Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward's best-selling novel, "All The President's Men".
A true story about the infamous Watergate break-in / scandal in which most of the Nixon administration were later found guilty of corruption and attempting to sabotage the Democratic National Committee during the United States presidential election campaign of 1972.
Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford effectively portray reporters, turned investigative journalists, Bernstein and Woodward (respectively) with arresting impact.
The film's cerebral and haunting soundtrack was composed by David Shire.
It strongly adds to the atmosphere of mystery throughout this superb political thriller, surrounding the viewer with curiosities that are concealed in shadows down the spindly damp trails of goverment espionage and covert operations while at the same time being hunted down by two determined and committed newspaper reporters, who eventually mature into Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalists.
This 1976 film was nominated for 8
Academy Awards.
It received 4.
Best Art Direction - George Gaines; George Jenkins
(For the replication of The Washington Post's main newsroom and offices.)
Best Screenplay (Adapted) - William Goldman
Best Sound - Dick Alexander; Les Fresholtz; Arthur Piantadosi; James E. Webb

Conspiracy film specialist Alan J.
