The Nixon White House tapes are audio recordings of the communications of U.S. PresidentRichard Nixon and various Nixon administration officials and White House staff, ordered by the President for personal records.
The taping system was installed in selected rooms in the White House in February 1971 and was voice activated. The records come from line-taps placed on the telephones and small concealed microphones in various locations around the rooms. The recordings were produced on up to nine Sony TC-800B open-reel tape recorders. The recorders were turned off on July 18, 1973, two days after they became public knowledge as a result of the Watergate hearings.

How response to Watergate tapes 50 years ago contrasts with today's political climate
Fifty years ago, a White House aide revealed that then-President Nixon’s conversations had been recorded. The tapes included Nixon working to cover up the Watergate break-in connected to his campaign and became a point of no return for him as he slid to political downfall. Lisa Desjardins discussed more with Watergate prosecutor Jill Wine-Banks and Stuart Streichler of the University of Washington.

On Aug. 5, 1974, President Richard Nixon released tapes related to the Watergate break-in following a Supreme Court ruling in the case, United States v. Nixon. One of the tapes, now known as the "smoking gun" tape, was a conversation between Nixon and his chief of staff, H.R. Haldeman, that proved Nixon tried to cover up the break-in. "CBS Evening News" covered the breaking news on Aug. 5, 1974.

On June 23, 1972, President Richard Nixon met with Chief of Staff H. R. ("Bob") Haldeman in the White House. This meeting was captured by recording devices in the Oval Office.
In this conversation segment, President Nixon and Haldeman discuss the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate building. They focus on the progress of the investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, especially on the tracing the source of money found on the burglars. They propose having the Central Intelligence Agency ask the FBI to halt their investigation of the Watergate break-in by claiming that the break-in had been a national security operation.
Persons mentioned include FBI Director L. Patrick ("Pat") Gray, CIA director Richard Helms, FBI Associate Director Mark Felt, and Deputy Director of Central Intelligence Vernon A. Walters; White House aides John Mitchell, John Dean, John Ehrlichman, and Charles ("Chuck") Colson; Watergate operatives G. Gordon Liddy, E. Howard Hunt, Bernard Baker, and the burglars, two of whom were Cuban exiles; as well as Kenneth Dahlberg, Midwest finance chairman for the Committee to Re-elect the President.
This conversation is often referred to as the "smoking gun" in the context of the Watergate investigation.

Watergate is the biggest political scandal in American history. It led to a major setback for the Republican Party, especially as they lost many seats in Congress in the 1974 midterm elections. Watergate dramatically increased cynicism and distrust of the federal government, which had already been on the rise due to its lies revolving around the Vietnam War. #watergate #ushistory #apush

Over 150 hours of President Nixon's audio tape recordings have recently been released to the public. As Bill Plante reports, Nixon made controversial claims about antisemitism and abortion.
Thankfully, he did not. Or he never would’ve left office for his deceitful behavior as President of the United States.
