The Tsar who faked his own death - the curious case of Alexander I and St Feodor Kuzmich
#tsar #russianhistory #imperialrussia #russianorthodox #saint
Tsar Alexander I of Russia died in 1825 in a remote town in southern Russia. Persistent rumours began shortly after his death that he didn't die in 1825, but faked his own demise so that he could retire, rumours that seem to be confirmed when his tomb was opened in 1921 and it was found to be empty. In 1836 a man called Feodor Kuzmich came to the attention of the authorities, he was a gentle man, who was seemingly well-educated and refined and had a story to tell, although he was guarded about his past. He spent his last twenty years living the life of a hermit and in constant prayer and developed a reputation for holiness which in time led to him being declared a saint by the Orthodox Church. Rumours at the time were circ...

How Tsar Alexander ALMOST Started a World War (And if He Did)
After decades of war in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, Europe had finally defeated Napoleon, and peace was restored. But, the big question that still remained was what to do next, and, Tsar Alexander of Russia only had one thing on his mind. He wanted all of Poland. But, during the Congress of Vienna, the rest of the Great Powers refused to let Alexander take so much. And, after heated discussions, Alexander refused to back down, and it seemed that Europe was on the brink of yet another war. Eventually, though, Alexander backed down, and peace was restored. But, what if that changed? What if Alexander went to war with all of Europe? Enjoy!

ALEXANDER I
Alexander I’s reign began as a period of hope for liberal reforms. It continued with the military triumph over Napoleon, and ended in disappointment as the first constitution project failed, and the Emperor favored autocratic governing thereafter.
PAUL I
Alexander I, was the grandson of Catherine the Great. His father, Paul I was the Emperor for five years until being murdered by conspirators. It is generally believed that Alexander I was aware of the conspiracy and hoped, mistakenly, that his father’s life would be spared.
LIBERALISM
In the first years of his reign, Alexander I launched a series of progressive reforms. He suppressed the secret police, improved the education system, and relaxed censorship.
Expectations were very high: The educated elite hoped for a constitutional government and the abolition of serfdom. Constitution projects were presented to Alexander by Mikhail Speransky, his closest advisor. Although serfdom was abolished in the Baltic provinces, the movement towards general liberation failed because of resistance from the nobility.
NAPOLEON
At the beginning of the 19th century, the Russian army suffered two shameful defeats against French Emperor, Napoleon. In 1805, Russians were beaten at the Battle of Austerlitz, and in 1806, at the Battle of Jena-Auerstedt. Thereafter, Alexander I, formed a compromise alliance with Napoleon in 1807 at Tilsit. It was an uneasy alliance that presaged war.
WAR OF 1812
In 1812, Napoleon launched an attack on Russia as he took his Grande Armée of 500,000 men across the Russian border. The campaign proved fatal to the French army and turned the tide of the whole course of the Napoleonic Wars. After the 1812 Battle of Borodino, that neither side won, Russians retreated and set fire to Moscow.
Napoleon expected a plea for peace from Alexander I but did not get it. After one month he withdrew his troops from Moscow and a long retreat followed. Cold and disease took its toll and Napoleon returned from Russia with only 25,000 men.
Victory over Napoleon placed Alexander I among the five powers who set the new order in Europe at the Congress of Vienna in 1815.
AUTOCRACY
The second half of Alexander’s reign was dominated by his reactionary advisor, Alexey Arakcheyev. Alexander withdrew into religious mysticism and died, suddenly, of typhus in 1825.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As one of Scotland history tour guides people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation of your from the US. So from April 2020 I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.
