The Aleutian Islands Campaign was a struggle over the Aleutian Islands, part of the Alaska Territory, in the American theater and the Pacific theater of World War II starting on 3 June 1942. A small Japanese force occupied the islands of Attu and Kiska, but the remoteness of the islands and the difficulties of weather and terrain meant that it took nearly a year for a far larger U.S./Canadian force to eject them. The islands' strategic value was their ability to control Pacific Great Circle routes. This control of the Pacific transportation routes is why U.S. GeneralBilly Mitchell stated to the U.S. Congress in 1935, "I believe that in the future, whoever holds Alaska will hold the world. I think it is the most important strategic place in the world." The Japanese reasoned that control of the Aleutians would prevent a possible U.S. attack across the Northern Pacific. Similarly, the U.S. feared that the islands would be used as bases from which to launch aerial assaults against the West Coast.
The Aleutian Islands (/əˈluːʃən/; possibly from Chukchialiat, "island") are a chain of 14 large volcanic islands and 55 smaller ones belonging to both the United States and Russia. They form part of the Aleutian Arc in the Northern Pacific Ocean, occupying an area of 6,821 sq mi (17,666km2) and extending about 1,200mi (1,900km) westward from the Alaska Peninsula toward the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, and mark a dividing line between the Bering Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. Crossing longitude 180°, at which point east and west longitude end, the archipelago contains both the westernmost part of the United States by longitude (Amatignak Island) and the easternmost by longitude (Semisopochnoi Island). The westernmost U.S. island in real terms, however, is Attu Island, west of which runs the International Date Line. While nearly all the archipelago is part of Alaska and is usually considered as being in the "Alaskan Bush", at the extreme western end, the small, geologically related Commander Islands belong to Russia.

The Aleutian Islands Campaign

Alaska vs. Japan - The Battle of Attu
The freezing cold, the impenetrable fog, and impossibly strong winds made Attu, one of several islands in the westernmost point of Alaska, the least convenient place for war. And yet, these tiny and remote territories were the epicenter of one of the deadliest battles of World War II, where foreign invaders occupied American soil for the first time since 1812.
The Battle of Attu, called “The Forgotten Battle” by veterans, is considered one of the most bizarre conflicts in the history of WW2. And although it was largely overshadowed by the Guadalcanal campaign that was fought simultaneously, its story is filled with intrigue, strategy, and one last desperate attempt by the Japanese to honor their country.

This week Seth and guest co-host Jon Parshall discuss the largely forgotten and relatively unknown campaign in the Aleutian islands in 1942 and 1943. The pair discuss the Japanese invasion in 1942 and the plans made by the US in the defense of the Aleutians and eventual recapture. The discussion wraps as the American 7th Infantry Division lands and recaptures sovereign American territory.

The Battle for the Aleutian Islands
This video is about how Japanese troops occupied two islands in the Aleutians chain off Alaska in 1942, prompting fears they could be used as bases to attack the U.S. West Coast. The U.S. and Canada responded and the Japanese were ultimately ejected. Never heard of it? You're not alone. It was called "The Forgotten Battle." U.S. Air Force veteran and Museum docent Don Miles fills you in and answers questions from the audience. Pilot Ian Wayman describes the Museum's PBY Catalina patrol bomber, a type that played several roles in the Aleutians campaign. You'll see the PBY start up, taxi out, take off, and fly!

The Aleutian Islands Campaign was a military campaign led by U.S. and Canadian forces on the Islands of Attu and Kiska.
It saw the only land battle fought on U.S. soil in World War two. .
Apart from that, the invasion of the Kiska island known as Operation Cottage is remembered as one of the most bizarre actions in the entire war.

Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series covering the Pacific War week by week continues with another video in the series. Last week, we covered one of the most important battles of the Pacific War, the milestone that stopped the expansion of the Japanese Empire and allowed the Americans to go on the offensive for the first time in the war. But concurrent to the Battle of Midway and the death of the 1st Kido Butai, Admiral Yamamoto had devised a plan to strike Dutch Harbor and invade the first territory in North America: the Aleutian Islands. With huge resources allocated to this operation, the American defenders in Alaska were about to meet one of the most significant invasion forces this soil would ever see, so join us as we delve deeper into the struggle for Alaska and the Aleutian Islands.

This lecture covers the campaigns in the Aleutian Islands during 1942 and 1943. I will describe the role of the Aleutians in the Midway Operation during the summer of 1942, and its connection with the simultaneous operations in the Solomons and New Guinea.

The Aleutian IslandsCampaign of World War II is often overlooked when discussions of the conflict occur ... Pagano has long felt Japan should pay reparations for what took place during the Aleutian ...
The Aleutian IslandsCampaign marked the only time continental North America was attacked by enemy forces during the Second World War... Why has the Aleutian Islands Campaign been largely forgotten?.
First deployed during the Aleutian IslandsCampaign, they then returned to the US to prepare for Project Plough, a mission to parachute into German-occupied Norway and knock out strategic targets.
