Alan St. Clair (born 18 May 1959) is a British guitarist, who played with several prominent punk and new wave musicians in the 1970s and 1980s.
Biography
In 1977, he helped form punk band Dog Days, alongside Simon Le Bon, later of Duran Duran. Other members included Peter Johns, Carol Isaacs and Olivier Behzadi. One demo tape was made, one concert played before they disbanded when Le Bon left London for University in Birmingham.After the band dissolved in 1978, St Clair continued to work with Peter Johns, and in 1980 formed Voxpop, alongside Ian Johns, Steve Wilcox and Neil Pyzer, until 1981 when they disbanded. The same year, he formed Dive Dive Dive with David Pearson, Vincent Pitt, Patrick Ahern and John Pilny and Beau Shave. Demos and concerts followed.
In 1982, he also began to work with Howard Devoto (singer of Buzzcocks and Magazine), helping him with his solo career, playing guitar on his album, Jerky Versions of the Dream. North America and European tours followed. While he was with Howard Devoto, he joined Spear of Destiny. He left Spear of Destiny in 1986 after demos were made of the album that became Outlands. St. Clair was asked to rejoin Spear in 1988 to tour their new album, The Price You Pay. Further demos were made by Kirk Brandon and St. Clair, some of which would later appear on Sod's Law, although not performed by him.
The streetcar route along St. Clair Avenue was created by the Toronto Civic Railways in 1911 in a successful attempt to promote development in a newly annexed section of the city.
Originally, the route ran in a dedicated right of way. The route was transferred to the Toronto Transportation Commission upon its creation in 1921, which removed the dedicated right of way in 1928. It is the northernmost streetcar route still in operation, and was the first to make an underground connection with the subway'sSt. Clair West Station. It also once ran past St. Clair Station up Mount Pleasant to Eglinton Avenue, but this portion was later made a separate Mount Pleasant route that was subsequently converted to bus operation in the 1970s.
When first built, the St. Clair streetcar operated in a dedicated right-of-way, similar to the modern 510 Spadina route. A dedicated right-of-way is a lane generally in the centre of the street, reserved for transit vehicles. However, it was removed between 1928 and 1935 and replaced with paved trackage open to mixed traffic. The TTC later came to regret this decision, and in 2005 it began rebuilding a dedicated streetcar right-of-way.
The Lake Cities was a daily passenger train operated by Amtrak between Chicago, Illinois and Toledo, Ohio via Detroit, Michigan. It was formerly known as the St. Clair, a Chicago–Detroit train which operated in tandem with the Wolverine. The extension to Toledo gave travelers in Michigan the opportunity to connect with eastbound trains such as the Lake Shore Limited without backtracking to Chicago.
The Lake Cities made its first run on August 3, 1980, using the same Turboliner equipment as its predecessor. Amtrak re-routed the Lake Cities to Pontiac, Michigan in 1995, mirroring the route of the Wolverine and the Twilight Limited. The Detroit–Toledo segment was replaced by Thruway Motorcoach service. Amtrak proposed to restore the Lake Cities to Toledo as part of its network growth strategy in the late 1990s but ultimately cancelled the project.As of 2013 it is still not possible to travel by train to or from Michigan without passing through Chicago's Union Station. On April 26, 2004 Amtrak dropped the individual names for the Chicago–Detroit–Pontiac trains, naming them all the "Wolverine."
The station is located behind the buildings which front on the east side of Yonge Street. The main entrance is on the south side of St. Clair Avenue East, with the collectors booth, fare barrier and a McDonald's restaurant at street level, and a streetcar loop on the east side of the building. On the concourse level below that, at the south end of the station off Pleasant Boulevard, is a second staffed entrance and the bus platforms. The station has been fully accessible since 2007, with elevators, escalators and stairway connecting all levels.

North of the station, the tunnel jogs west to cross to the west side of Yonge Street. At the Muir Portal the line runs in an open cut for 1.3 kilometres, between Yonge Street and the Davisville Yard, the TTC's original subway yard.
South of the station, the train continues to travel in a tunnel. Originally, the area south of the station was open-cut until Summerhill Avenue, immediately before Summerhill station; the line continued in open cut as far as Pleasant Boulevard, just before the next station to the north, St. Clair. Various sections of this open cut were roofed over as the years passed, and since the early 1980s it has been entirely under cover, except when one block was opened out and re-covered, to allow new construction above it. Passengers who look out into the tunnel on this section can still see the sloping sides of the original cut, the stumps of lamp posts and trees, and the undersides of four road bridges.
Most of the St. Clair neighborhood was composed of St. Clair Village, a 556-unit public housing project owned by the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh and built in the early 1950s.As of 2010, the housing complex was completely demolished with the housing authority retaining the ground for possible future development of townhouses.
There are no stores or other commercial businesses in St. Clair, it is a strictly residential community. There is, however, one church, Lighthouse Cathedral, serving the community as well as various social service agencies at work in St. Clair for the largely poor population.
