He was the author of several books of military history, including his controversial work The Donkeys (1961), which is considered to have inspired the musical satire Oh, What a Lovely War!
Clark became known for his flamboyance, wit and irreverence. Norman Lamont called him "the most politically incorrect, outspoken, iconoclastic and reckless politician of our times". He is particularly remembered for his three-volume diary, a candid account of political life under Thatcher and a moving description of the weeks preceding his death, when he continued to write until he could no longer focus on the page.
Clark was a passionate supporter of animal rights, joining activists in demonstrations at Dover against live export, and outside the House of Commons in support of Animal Liberation Front hunger-striker Barry Horne. When he died after radiation therapy for a brain tumour, his family said Clark wanted it to be stated that he had "gone to join Tom and the other dogs."
The current bishop is the Right Reverend Alan Hopes who was appointed by Pope Francis and was formally installed at the Cathedral Church of St John the Baptist in Norwich on 16 July 2013. Bishop Hopes had served as an auxiliary bishop of Westminster from 2003 to 2013.
As a young child, Clark received piano lessons. Then, at the age of 13 and while still a pupil at Chester-le-Street Grammar School, he played Hammond organ in working men's clubs. He resumed his formal musical education at Durham Technical College and was offered a place at the Guildhall School of Music, but turned it down because by then he was already forging a successful career in music which included, while also working on a solo career, playing with a reformed Geordie which featured Brian Johnson who would later join AC/DC, and recording on a number of tracks of the Geordie album No Good Woman; playing and recording with a duo called Splinter who were signed to George Harrison's Dark Horse label; playing and recording with Gallagher & Lyle; and he did a tour of summer festivals with Lindisfarne, which included Knebworth.
Clark got his start at the CBC as a copy boy in Ottawa. In the 1970s he worked in the network's national newsroom in Toronto. He later joined CBC Radio, where he worked as a producer, executive producer, news special host, and executive assistant to the program director. In 1983 he was named head of CBC Radio sports, which he established as a separate department from news.

In November 1989, Clark was hired by Arthur Smith to serve as deputy head of CBC Sports. In January 1990, Clark was named acting head of CBC Sports after Smith accepted the position of executive producer and vice-president of Dick Clark Productions. Soon after taking over, the network announced budget cuts. As a result, Clark had to terminate three employees and, due to overtime costs, eliminate coverage of Canadian Football League games on holiday weekends. In April 1990, Clark was appointed head of CBC Sports.
On 13 March 1976, the new Diocese of East Anglia was established, and Alan Clark was appointed its first bishop on 26 April 1976 and installed at the Cathedral Church of St John the Baptist, Norwich on 2 June 1976. As the bishop of the new diocese, Alan Clark had to set up all the necessary instruments and commissions for the diocese to operate successfully. Following his 75th birthday in August 1994, he retired on 21 March 1995 and assumed the title Bishop Emeritus of East Anglia. On 2 June 2001, Bishop Clark celebrated the 25th Anniversary of his installation as the first Bishop of the Diocese.
Clark was born to Alfred Eugene Clark (born 1938) and Mildred I. Clark (born 1940), natives of Arkansas County near Stuttgart in eastern Arkansas, who relocated to Hot Springs in 1960. Alfred and Mildred taught school, farmed, and pastored several Christian churches, two of the Church of the Nazarene denomination. In 1973, they launched Clarks Building & Decorating Center, a lumberyard and flooring center. Alan Clark transferred in the eleventh grade to Cutter–Morning Star High School, from which he graduated c. 1978. There he met his future wife, Jana Lynn Pruitt (born 1961). He is heavily involved in his church, including a role as associate pastor and youth pastor, but his website does not give the name or denomination of the church.
