What happened to the air war in Ukraine?
When the war in Ukraine began, there were estimates that Russia would establish air superiority within a matter of days. But 9 months into the war, the skies over Ukraine are still contested. Why have Russia struggled to utilise their air power effectively? And how has the war in the air changed as a result?
We look at how Ukraine's air defences have created a denial of air space, and the history of surface to air missile systems, which has led to a lot of the SAMS in the war in Ukraine dating back to the Soviet era. As the skies have become more dangerous due to advanced SAM technology, we’ve seen the development of new systems to resist air dominance, such as new surveillance and combat drones.

Falklands Conflict in the Air | How British Harriers beat the odds
When the Falklands Conflict began Argentina seemingly had a massive advantage in the skies. They had over 100 aircraft of varying types. Some could operate from the Argentinian mainland and others could operate from airstrips on the Falklands themselves. Meanwhile, the British Task Force initially had only 20 Sea Harriers which could fit on its two aircraft carriers, HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible. It was up to them to protect the Task Force at sea as well as the troops on the ground, but to many that seemed like an impossible task.
In this 3rd episode of our Falklands series IWM Curator Paris Agar examines the conflict in the air. Just how big was the Argentinian advantage? How did each side change their strategy? And how did British pilots beat the odds and take control of the skies? T...

The Ukraine Air War - The Russian campaign & does Ukraine need Western jets?
Sponsored by Private Internet Access: https://www.piavpn.com/Perun
Before the war, the Russian Government had poured significant sums into the modernisation of its air-force, acquiring hundreds of new aircraft, deploying new weapon systems and testing the force over Syria.
In Ukraine, the VKS has found itself as the stronger party, but none the less held off by Ukrainian air defences and fighters and incapable of delivering decisive support for ground forces.
In this episode we look at the air war (building on previous discussions of ground based air defences and helicopters) and also at one of the most contentious issues for Western nations supporting Ukraine - whether UA needs (and should receive) Western built aircraft.

WWII Air Force Expert Rates 8 Dogfights In Movies | How Real Is It? | Insider
Pilot and Air Force officer Lt. Col. Matt Ziemann rates eight World War II dogfight scenes in movies for realism.
He discusses the accuracy of real World War II-era dogfights portrayed in Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" (2017), starring Tom Hardy; Michael Bay's "Pearl Harbor" (2001), starring Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett; and "Battle of Britain" (1969), starring Michael Caine. He also comments on the realism of certain fighting tactics and the physics of flight in "Red Tails" (2012), starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard; "Unbroken" (2014), starring Domhnall Gleeson; "Midway" (2019), featuring Woody Harrelson and Patrick Wilson; "Memphis Belle" (1990), starring Matthew Modine; and "The Eternal Zero" (2013), starring Junichi Okada.

New Concept for Air Warfare
DARPA's System of Systems (SoS) Integration Technology and Experimentation (SoSITE) program aims to develop and demonstrate concepts for maintaining air superiority through novel SoS architectures--combinations of aircraft, weapons, sensors and mission systems--that distribute air warfare capabilities across a large number of interoperable manned and unmanned platforms.
The vision is to integrate new technologies and airborne systems
with existing systems more quickly and at lower cost than near-peer adversaries can counter them.
SoSITE is being developed by DARPA's Strategic Technology Office.

When the Falklands Conflict began Argentina seemingly had a massive advantage in the skies. They had over 100 aircraft of varying types. Some could operate from the Argentinian mainland and others could operate from airstrips on the Falklands themselves.
To answer those questions and more Agar takes an in-depth look at the aircraft of the Falklands Conflict including the Vulcan, Pucará, Wessex and Harrier.

Caveats & Comments:
As always - caveats around the fog of war apply - particularly in relation to an area of warfare as traditionally associated with overclaiming or duelling narratives as air combat.
Where possible I have used up to date data - but reporting from the front on changing sortie rates and tactics is (obviously) inconsistent and observations may not be reflective of current state
I also note that many old RU MoD publications and pages have become inaccessible in recent months/years - in these cases I can rely on tools include internet archives or contemporaneous secondary publications

Lt. Col. Matt Ziemann is an instructor at the Air Force's Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base. He teaches 'Leadership and Air Power.' He has been a pilot for 26 years and has experience flying WWII-era planes.
