Afzal Khan (died 10 November 1659) was a medieval Indian commander who served the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur, and fought against Shivaji. He was killed at a meeting with Shivaji, and his army was defeated in the Battle of Pratapgad.
His name is also transliterated as "Afzul Khan" in the historical records.
Early life
Afzal Khan was a leading court figure during the reign of Ali Adil Shah II of the Bijapur Sultanate. His steadfast skills and commanding ability led to his popularity and emergence in the ranks of hierarchy. According to legend he was awarded a famous sword known as the Adili, the sword was studded with diamonds. Afzal Khan was also given a popular elephant Howdah named Dhal-Gaj. He headed a personal force of 10,000 soldiers.
War against the Marathas
When the Marathas led by Shivaji challenged the Adilshahi supremacy, Afzal Khan volunteered to the task of defeating the Marathas. According to a Bijapuri legend, he sought a SufiPir's blessings before setting out on every military campaign. On such a visit before the campaign against Shivaji, the elderly Pir prophesied that it would be Afzal Khan's last campaign.
Khan was born in Pakistan and came to the UK aged 11. After leaving school without qualifications, he had a number of jobs – including as a Greater Manchester PoliceConstable – before returning to education and qualifying as a solicitor: he is now a partner in the solicitors firm of Mellor & Jackson, Oldham.
Political career
Khan was first elected a Councillor in 2000 being re-elected in 2004, 2007 and 2011, representing CheethamWard and also served as Executive Member for Children's Services. Khan was the youngest, first British Pakistani and Muslim, Lord Mayor of Manchester for 2005-2006. He has also served as Assistant Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Britain and is currently its North West representative.
From 2000 to 2004 Khan was a member of the Department of Trade and Industry's Ethnic Minority Business Forum, advising the then Secretary of State, Patricia Hewitt. Following the 2005 London bombings he was a member of a Home Office working group aimed at preventing extremism.
Khan was appointed CBE for his race relations work and in 2011 was suggested as a candidate for Oldham East and Saddleworth. In 2012, he stood as the Labour candidate at the Bradford West by-election losing out to Imran Hussain, Deputy Leader of Bradford Council and a barrister (who was beaten at the election by George Galloway).
Afzal Khan began his acting career from stage dramas in Islamabad. He acted in a few plays produced by PTV that were aired only in Islamabad and Peshawar.
He was cast as John Rambo (a janitor) in PTV's comedy series Guest House in 1991. It was an instant hit and Rambo became the most popular character of the series.
After his success as John Rambo, he began to get offers from movies. In 1992, he signed his first movie and became a mainstream Lollywood actor. However, his image of a comedy actor earned him mostly comedy characters. He tried to do some serious movies but wasn't as successful.
He currently appears as judge on a talent show as well as a dancing show.
