Guildford, Victoria
Guildford is a small settlement situated on the Loddon River, 130 kilometres (81 mi) north-west of Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia. It is located on the Midland Highway between Daylesford and Castlemaine. The population recorded at the 2011 census was 245.
Facilities in the town include a post office (in a building dating from 1901), hotel, community hall and a general store.
It is thought that the town was named after Guildford in England.
Big Tree
The Big Tree is a large, well-preserved River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis), located at the corner of Fryers Street and Ballarat Street. It is thought to be one of the largest in Victoria, with a height of 34 metres and circumference of 9.35 metres at the base. The tree is estimated to be over 500 years old.
History
The area was known as Yarrayne to the original inhabitants of the area, the Jajowarrung people. The first European to explore the area was Major Thomas Mitchell in 1836.
By the 1840s pastoral runs had been established and, in the following decade, gold miners flocked to the area during the rush at the Mount Alexander goldfields. The largest encampment of Chinese miners in Victoria (estimates vary from 5000-6000 individual miners) was situated at the junction of the Loddon River and Campbells Creek. Tensions ran high between the white miners and the Chinese which erupted in numerous local conflicts. This anti-Chinese hostility, combined with discriminatory taxation against Chinese miners, saw the Chinese population dwindle and eventually all but disappear by the end of the gold rush.

Bird's-eye view
A bird's-eye view is an elevated view of an object from above, with a perspective as though the observer were a bird, often used in the making of blueprints, floor plans and maps.
It can be an aerial photograph, but also a drawing. Before manned flight was common, the term "bird's eye" was used to distinguish views drawn from direct observation at high locations (for example a mountain or tower), from those constructed from an imagined (bird's) perspectives. Bird's eye views as a genre have existed since classical times. The last great flourishing of them was in the mid-to-late 19th century, when bird's eye view prints were popular in the United States and Europe.
Terminology
The terms aerial view and aerial viewpoint are also sometimes used synonymous with bird's-eye view. The term aerial view can refer to any view from a great height, even at a wide angle, as for example when looking sideways from an airplane window or from a mountain top. Overhead view is fairly synonymous with bird's-eye view but tends to imply a less lofty vantage point than the latter term. Victoria (Australia)
Victoria (abbreviated as Vic) is a state in the south-east of Australia. Victoria is Australia's most densely populated state and its second-most populous state overall. Most of its population is concentrated in the area surrounding Port Phillip Bay, which includes the metropolitan area of its capital and largest city, Melbourne, which is Australia's second-largest city. Geographically the smallest state on the Australian mainland, Victoria is bordered by Bass Strait and Tasmania to the south,New South Wales to the north, the Tasman Sea to the east, and South Australia to the west.
Prior to European settlement, the area now constituting Victoria was inhabited by a large number of Aboriginal peoples, collectively known as the Koori. With Great Britain having claimed the entire Australian continent east of the 135th meridian east in 1788, Victoria was included in the wider colony of New South Wales. The first settlement in the area occurred in 1803 at Sullivan Bay, and much of what is now Victoria was included in the Port Phillip District in 1836, an administrative division of New South Wales. Victoria was officially created a separate colony in 1851, and achieved self-government in 1855. The Victorian gold rush in the 1850s and 1860s significantly increased both the population and wealth of the colony, and by the Federation of Australia in 1901, Melbourne had become the largest city and leading financial centre in Australasia. Melbourne also served as capital of Australia until the construction of Canberra in 1927, with the Federal Parliament meeting in Melbourne's Parliament House and all principal offices of the federal government being based in Melbourne.

The Borough of Guildford is a local government district with borough status in Surrey, England. Guildford is its largest settlement, only town and is the location of the council.
The district was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972 by an amalgamation of the municipal borough of Guildford and Guildford Rural District.
Functions
Borough councillors and officers work on devolved issues such as parks, leisure, older residents' services, youth services, streetscene, refuse collection, planning and aspects of business and tourism;Surrey County Council deal with transport, publicly owned infrastructure planning and maintenance, education, social services and overall waste management. The Borough owns significant heritage assets that include monuments such as Guildford Castle, as well museums, art collections and civic regalia.
Population
Guildford has the second largest population of Surrey's eleven districts (based on census statistics, only 600 residents behind Reigate and Banstead). Approximately half of the Borough’s population live in the town of Guildford.

Guildford (1810 ship)
Guildford was a two-decker merchant ship launched in 1810. She transported convicts to New South Wales. Of her eight voyages delivering convicts, for three she was under charter to the British East India Company (EIC). She underwent major repairs in 1819, her hull was sheathed in copper in 1822; in 1825 she received new wales, top sides and deck, the copper was repaired and other repairs. Guildford was lost without a trace in 1831.
Voyages
Magnus Johnson was Guildford's captain on her first seven voyages. On 4 July 1811 he received a letter of marque, which authorised Guildford, while under his command, to engage in offensive, and not just defensive, action against the French.Lloyd's Register for 1810 lists her trade as London-Jamaica.
On her first convict voyage, Guildford left London on 3 September 1811 in company with General Graham. She reached Rio de Janeiro on 27 October, and arrived at Port Jackson on 18 January 1812.Guildford carried 200 male convicts, one of whom died during the voyage.

Guildford Four and Maguire Seven
The Guildford Four and the Maguire Seven were the collective names of two groups whose convictions in English courts in 1975 and 1976 for the Guildford pub bombings of 5 October 1974 were eventually quashed after long campaigns for justice. The Guildford Four were convicted of bombings carried out by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA), and the Maguire Seven were convicted of handling explosives found during the investigation into the bombings. Both groups' convictions were eventually declared "incorrect and unsatisfactory" and reversed in 1989 and 1991 respectively after they had served up to 15–16 years in prison.
No one else was charged with the bombings, or supplying the material; three police officers were charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, and found not guilty.

The Guildford Four were charged with direct involvement with the IRA attacks. They were:
After their arrest, all four defendants confessed to the bombing under intense amount of coercion by the police. These statements were later retracted, but nonetheless formed the basis of the case against them. They would later be alleged to be the result of coercion by the police, ranging from intimidation to torture—including threats against family members—as well as the effects of drug withdrawal. Conlon argues in his autobiography that a key factor in his purportedly coerced confession was the fact that strengthened anti-terrorism laws passed in the early 1970s allowed the police to hold suspects without charges for up to a week, rather than the previous limit of 48 hours, and that he might have been able to withstand the treatment he had received had the original time limit been in effect.

During the early 1850s gold was discovered in the Guildford area with a rich fields in the direction of Castlemaine and Hepburn. This brought many diggers to the area to search for gold with a large number of Swiss Italians settling in the area.
The gold also brought thousands of Chinese miners to live and work in the area with some predictions there were as many as 6 000 Chinese living and working around Guildford Campbell's Creek and Vaughan in the 1860s. Some historians believe it was the largest concentration of Chinese minors in Australia at the time.
Hostility towards the Chinese was overt and there were numerous local conflicts. Consequently the Chinese miners gathered together for safety the largest encampment was near the junction of Campbell's Creek in the Loddon river at Guildford. Sadly no evidence of the camp remains today. At the time it was mostly calico tents along with narrow thoroughfares dotted with joss houses, tea houses, boarding houses, gambling establishments, opium dams, theatres and even a circus.
The Chinese worked not as individuals but in a type of cooperative which allow them to engage in open cut alluvial mining. Some evidence of the Chinese diggers still exist at nearby Vaughan where a Chinese cemetery is located at the entrance to the reserve.
Gold was also found in significant amounts at Vaughan and in 1859 it was estimated 13 000 people were living and working in the area.
According to Doug Stone the region around Vaughan is a great area to prospect for gold as you can both pan for gold and metal detect. There are great campsites in the bush along the Loddon River and you can venture out into the old miners patches that include names like Murdering Flat, Dead Man's Flat and Grog Shop Gully

Guildford is a small historic gold mining town situated on the Loddon River, 137 kilometres (85 mi) north-west of Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia. It is located on the Midland Highway between Daylesford and Castlemaine.

Rain and thunderstorms have eased across Victoria, but the Bureau of Meteorology warns the risk of flooding isn't over yet. There are currently 17 flood warnings in place across the state including five evacuation orders in Maribyrnong, Rochester, Charlton, Murchison and Wangaratta.
Country Victoria remains on high alert with emergency services focusing on Rochester, Shepparton and Carlton.

Guildford is an historic gold mining settlement located amidst low hills on the banks of the Loddon River. It is today something of a dormitory town for those who work at Castlemaine. It has one hotel, a public hall, a general store, a post office, bed and breakfast accommodation and two local vineyards. The surrounding area is predominantly sheep and cattle country.
The main reason for visiting Guildford is to admire 'The Big Tree' (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) at the intersection of Fryers Street and Ballaarat Street.
This beautifully preserved and healthy river red gum is thought to be the largest of its species in Victoria. The girth at the base is 12.8 metres and the height is 25.9 metres.

Guildford Victoria is today a small rural town approximately 126 kilometers to the northwest of melbourne and 11 kilometers southeast of Castlemaine.
During the early 1850s gold was discovered in the Guildford area with a rich fields in the direction of Castlemaine and Hepburn. This brought many diggers to the area to search for gold with a large number of Swiss Italians settling in the area.
The gold also brought thousands of Chinese miners to live and work in the area with some predictions there were as many as 6 000 Chinese living and working around Guildford Campbell's Creek and Vaughan in the 1860s. Some historians believe it was the largest concentration of Chinese minors in Australia at the time.
Hostility towards the Chinese was overt and there were numerous local conflicts. Consequently the Chinese miners gathered together for safety the largest encampment was near the junction of Campbell's Creek in the Loddon river at Guildford. Sadly no evidence of the camp remains today. At the time it was mostly calico tents along with narrow thoroughfares dotted with joss houses, tea houses, boarding houses, gambling establishments, opium dams, theatres and even a circus.
The Chinese worked not as individuals but in a type of cooperative which allow them to engage in open cut alluvial mining. Some evidence of the Chinese diggers still exist at nearby Vaughan where a Chinese cemetery is located at the entrance to the reserve.
Gold was also found in significant amounts at Vaughan and in 1859 it was estimated 13 000 people were living and working in the area.
According to Doug Stone the region around Vaughan is a great area to prospect for gold as you can both pan for gold and metal detect. There are great campsites in the bush along the Loddon River and you can venture out into the old miners patches that include names like Murdering Flat, Dead Man's Flat and Grog Shop Gully

Guildford, Victoria
Guildford is a small settlement situated on the Loddon River, 130 kilometres (81 mi) north-west of Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia. It is located on the Midland Highway between Daylesford and Castlemaine. The population recorded at the 2011 census was 245.
Facilities in the town include a post office (in a building dating from 1901), hotel, community hall and a general store.
It is thought that the town was named after Guildford in England.
Big Tree
The Big Tree is a large, well-preserved River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis), located at the corner of Fryers Street and Ballarat Street. It is thought to be one of the largest in Victoria, with a height of 34 metres and circumference of 9.35 metres at the base. The tree is estimated to be over 500 years old.
History
The area was known as Yarrayne to the original inhabitants of the area, the Jajowarrung people. The first European to explore the area was Major Thomas Mitchell in 1836.
By the 1840s pastoral runs had been established and, in the following decade, gold miners flocked to the area during the rush at the Mount Alexander goldfields. The largest encampment of Chinese miners in Victoria (estimates vary from 5000-6000 individual miners) was situated at the junction of the Loddon River and Campbells Creek. Tensions ran high between the white miners and the Chinese which erupted in numerous local conflicts. This anti-Chinese hostility, combined with discriminatory taxation against Chinese miners, saw the Chinese population dwindle and eventually all but disappear by the end of the gold rush.

Rivers continue to rise in the Victoria flood emergency threatening thousands of homes, forcing more evacuations, cutting towns off and leaving communities without power.
The flood crisis comes as Australia's east coast braces for further thunderstorms this week, renewing flooding concerns for Victoria, as well as New South Wales and Tasmania.
In total there are just over 60 flood warnings in place across Victoria, stretching just north of Melbourne to the NSW border - and the water keeps on surging.
There's major concern for the regional centre of Shepparton today, with the Goulburn River expected to peak at a record 12.2 metres. Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp said the peak will hit "later this morning."
In Echuca, dozens of homes are already underwater with the Campaspe River peaking yesterday afternoon. And the neighbouring townships of Mooroopna and Kialla are cut off from each other.
In Maribyrnong, Melbourne, a trio of suspected looters are on the run after being surprised by a camera crew around flood-hit homes this morning.

It was an anxious night for many across Victoria as some were evacuated and others protected homes with sandbags, with floodwaters continuing to rise.
Residents in Shepparton, Mooroopna, Orrvale and Kialla West have this morning been told it is too late to leave their areas, after Major Flood Warnings were issued about the rising Goulburn River at about 3am, urging residents to immediately evacuate.
Meanwhile, three states could be put on flood watch in the coming days as a low-pressure system is set to sweep across the east coast. Rainfall up to 25mm could hit central-west Queensland, western New South Wales and Northern parts of Victoria by Thursday.

Towns cut off and evacuations ordered in Victoria's flood emergency | 9 News Australia

Rain and thunderstorms have eased across Victoria, but the Bureau of Meteorology warns the risk of flooding isn't over yet. There are currently 17 flood warnings in place across the state including five evacuation orders in Maribyrnong, Rochester, Charlton, Murchison and Wangaratta.
Country Victoria remains on high alert with emergency services focusing on Rochester, Shepparton and Carlton.
Shepparton, in the state's north, is one of the most at risk areas today with floodwaters expected to exceed the devastating 1974 levels.
