Castlemaine Victoria
Castlemaine Botanical Gardens history Castlemaine Botanical Gardens are one of Victoria’s oldest regional botanic gardens. The gardens were gazetted on 21 February 1860. Their scale reflects Castlemaine’s prosperity during the gold rush and community desire to highlight the success of the town. The gardens are believed to be designed by the first curator, Phillip Doran who held this position for 47 years until his death in 1913.
Development of the gardens was ongoing and continued until their peak in the 1890s. The impressive cast iron gates were constructed in 1877-78 by local engineering firm Thompson & Co and local monumental mason George Redfearn. Also in 1877-78, a decorative fountain was erected nearby. Lake Joanna was completed in 1879 and Lake Augusta was constructed in 1884. In t...

Trains at Castlemaine - Victorian Transport
In this video we see some trains at Castlemaine, a busy station on V/Line's Bendigo line northwest of Melbourne. This was recorded on the day when Steamrail's Maldon Experience tour to Bendigo with steam locomotives R761 & R711 took place, a train which I was a passenger on.
To start the video we see the tour depart the station for Bendigo, however it isn't the only steam train we see in the video. Castlemaine is a station on the Victorian Goldfields Railway which runs to Maldon, so we see Steamrail's K153 shunting around, which was leased to VGR at the time. The Victorian Goldfields Railway is the only heritage railway in the state which has an active connection to the mainline, allowing VGR to lease locomotives and rollingstock from other heritage operators.

Many of the gardens heritage features including Lake Augusta, the summerhouse, bridges and grotto have since been removed. The gardens have decreased in size, with land annexed for a caravan park, swimming pool and Alexander Hospital, but remain of historical, scientific, social and aesthetic significance.
Many of the original plants were provided by Government Botanist Ferdinand Mueller and Daniel Bunce the curator of Geelong Botanic Gardens. An English Oak planted in 1863 is one of the oldest commemorative plantings in Victoria. Many of the plants within the gardens are characteristic of late nineteenth century gardens. They also represent the scientific role of a botanical garden. The gardens feature an outstanding collection of mature trees, including many conifers, Elms and Oaks as well as stunning individual specimens of Indian Bean Tree, Peppercorn .. if iInterested you can also look the history of the township Castlemaine Victoria Australia on net for more info

On this week‘s adventure we travel to Castlemaine in our converted Ford transit van. My partner Adam and our cavoodle puppy Twyla and I are staying at BIG4 Castlemaine Gardens Holiday Park Castlemaine, VIC. This will be our third time we have stayed at the park in our van.
I’ll link our last two trips to Castlemaine , Maldon & the surrounds down below.
BIG4 Castlemaine Gardens Holiday Park Castlemaine, VIC . Just a 90 minute journey north by car or train from Melbourne, BIG4 Castlemaine Gardens Holiday Park is a peaceful retreat in the heart of the eclectic and charming historic goldmining town of Castlemaine. With a big country sky overhead and overlooking Castlemaine’s renowned Botanical Gardens, BIG4 Castlemaine is the ideal base to explore the region's wineries, towns, galleries, fine restaurants and country pubs, or to simply take time out in rugged and beautiful bushland landscapes. Whether you want an extended fun-filled family holiday, a romantic getaway, a gourmet escape or simply a break from the everyday, you'll find what you need right here. Oh, and the four-legged family friend is welcome too!
When we first arrived to Castlemaine we took a walk around the shops and picked up some doggy treats for Twyla. We headed back to BIG4 Castlemaine Gardens Holiday Park we made home-made pizzas in the pizza oven they have set up, for holiday makers to use.
The next morning we traveled to Maldon Victoria, Australia, in the Shire of Mount Alexander local government area. It has been designated "Australia's first notable town" and is notable for its 19th-century appearance, maintained since gold-rush days.
Every second Sunday of the month Maldon has an outdoor farmers market. We grabbed a coffee, some hot jam doughnuts , local cheese and relish. Then took a walk down the streets of Maldon . It’s like stepping back in time buildings from 1800.
On the way back from Maldon we stopped of at The Old Castlemaine Gaol, a prison located in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia. The prison was modelled on Pentonville; the present building replaced the original, designed by Inspector General John Price which was never occupied. Built in 1861 to house offenders from the goldfields and nearby towns, it served various functions in the penal system before it was closed down and its prisoners transferred to HM Prison Loddon in 1990. The jail is going to reopen in January February 2022 as an art gallery with sculptures.
That night we ate at the Bridge Hotel, Castlemaine. We loved going here because they’re pet friendly and have fantastic food. Plus, it was only a 5 minute walk from Big 4.
Also Across the road from Big 4 caravan park is the The Mill .
On-site in their food precinct, individual small businesses include: a Viennese coffeehouse and coffee roastery, winemakers, sourdough baker, craft brewery, smallgoods maker, cheese and dairy producer, chocolatier and ice cream maker. We picked up some cold meats to take home from Oakwood Smallgoods Co.
We check out The Garfield water wheel: a hydraulic power on the Victorian goldfields. Then the Forest Creek Historic Gold Diggings and Castlemaine Anticlinal Fold Marker.
Below are the links from our last two visits to Castlemaine and Maldon .
