The Adductor Magnus Muscle
👉The adductor magnus is a key muscle for athletes, especially those involved in sports such as soccer, basketball, and hockey, where explosive movements and quick changes of direction are required. Strengthening the adductor magnus can improve performance and reduce the risk of injury.
👉 Adductor magnus can be strained or torn through overuse or excessive strain, leading to pain and weakness in the inner thigh.
👉 The adductor magnus works in conjunction with other muscles to maintain stability and balance during activities such as walking, running, and jumping.
The adductor magnus is involved in adduction, extension, and lateral rotation of the hip joint and is one of the primary muscles used in activities such as squatting and kicking. It also helps stabilize the pelvis and lower extre...

In this video tutorial we will cover the most important facts about the adductor magnus muscle, one of the biggest muscles in the human body.
It originates at the inferior pubic ramus, the ischial ramus and the ischial tuberosity and inserts both at the linea aspera (“fleshy insertion”) and the medial epicondyle (“tendinous insertion”). It receives dual nerve supply via the tibial nerve and the obturator nerve.

Anatomy of the Adductor Magnus Muscle
The adductor magnus is a very thick triangular muscle. There are two parts- the pubic part and the ischial part. The pubic part arises from the inferior pubic ramis. The ischial part arises from the ischial ramis and the inferior lateral part of the ischial tuberosity. Ischial muscle part is the largest and thickest. The ischial part is close to the hamstring muscles, and it acts like the hamstrings. The pubic part inserts into the gluteal tuberosity, the Linea aspera, and the supracondylar ridge. Linea Aspera is a ridge of roughened surface on the posterior surface on the posterior surface of the femur. The ischial part (thick part) descends vertically and inserts into the adductor tubercle. The ischial part goes from the ischial tuberosity to the tubercle. The adductor magnus muscle is located within the medial compartment of the thigh. The adductor magnus muscle is innervated by obturator nerve and by the tibial part of the sciatic nerve. The pubic part is the adductor part supplied by the posterior division of the obturator nerve. The hamstrings part of the ischial part is supplied by the tibial nerve. From proximal to distal, the muscle is supplied by the obturator artery, the deep femoral artery, and its perforating branches, and from small muscular branches arising directly from the femoral artery. The pubic part is a true adductor of the thigh. The ischial part extends the hip. While in a sitting position, the examiner has the patient squeeze the thighs with resistance placed at the inside of the knees. Weak thigh adduction indicates obturator nerve injury. It is advised not to use a compression hip screw in the intertrochanteric reverse oblique fracture of the hip. Medial displacement of the distal fragment may occur due to the pull from the adductor muscles. Strong pull and displacement of the distal femur fracture fragment by the adductor muscle occurs in the subtrochanteric fractures. Adductor myodesis is a critical part of a transfemoral amputation. If it is not performed, the abductors and hip flexors can cause the femur to abduct, leading to severe problems with gait. Adductor myodesis improves the clinical outcome, provides soft tissue envelope that helps in prosthetic fitting, it improves position of the femur, and allows more efficient ambulation. The adductor magnus muscle is 4 times larger than the longus and brevis. Above knee amputation could result in 70% loss of the adduction moment. For maximum prosthetic control after distal transfemoral amputation, myodesis should be done, and the residual limb is maintained in slight adduction.

The adductors of the hip are part of the inner hip musculature and range from the lower pelvic bone to the femur and knee region. Thereby it lies in between the extensor and flexor group of the thigh muscles.
The hip adductors shape the surface anatomy of the medial thigh. The innervation is mainly supplied by the obturator nerve which arises from the lumbar plexus and reaches the adductors through the obturator canal; two muscles have a double innervation.
There are six hip adductor muscles in total. These are the adductor magnus muscle (one of the biggest muscles in the human anatomy), the adductor brevis muscle, the adductor longus muscle, the adductor minimus muscle, the pectineus muscle and the gracilis muscle.
As the name suggests, the main function of the hip adductor muscles is to adduct the hip.
In this video, we explore the hip adductor muscles in more detail. You’ll learn about:

The adductor longus, a muscle of the medial compartment of the thigh, is triangular in shape and forms in the floor of the femoral triangle and adductor canal.
The muscle has its origin on the anterior surface of the pubic body below the pubic crest i.e. the superior pubic ramus (just lateral to the pubic tubercle). It's insertion is then found on the middle third of the medial lip of the linea aspera. This insertion point is lateral to the adductor magnus and brevis insertions, but medial to the insertion of vastus medialis (one of the four components of quadriceps femoris).
The adductor longus recieves its innervation by the anterior division of the obturator nerve. All three adductors (except the hamstring part of the adductor magnus) and gracilis are supplied by the obturator nerve (anterior divisions of the ventral rami of L2-L4).
The main action of the adductor group of muscles is to adduct the thigh at the hip joint. The adductor longus muscle also participates in external/lateral rotation and flexion of the thigh.

The adductor brevis muscle is a muscle of the medial compartment of the thigh and belongs to the group of the hip adductors.
The adductor brevis has its origin on the inferior pubic ramus and inserts on the linea aspera. The adductor brevis recieves its innervation by the obturator nerve. All three adductors (except the hamstring part of the adductor magnus) and gracilis are supplied by the obturator nerve (anterior divisions of the ventral rami of L2-L4).

It also helps stabilize the pelvis and lower extremity during standing and walking. The adductor magnus works in conjunction with other adductor muscles, as well as the hamstrings and glutes, to perform these movements efficiently.
