Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art (BALTIC) is an international centre for contemporary art located on the south bank of the River Tyne alongside the Gateshead Millennium Bridge in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, in North East England, United Kingdom. It presents a constantly changing programme of exhibitions and events. It opened in 2002 in a converted flour mill. The Director is Sarah Munro who joined Baltic in November 2015. Mrs Munro is the first woman to hold the position of Director in the history of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. BALTIC is a registered charity under English law.
Reception
Publicly BALTIC’s profile has been considered rocky and despite its youth it has experienced three directorial changes and has fallen foul to much public gossip and speculation. The founding director, Sune Nordgren was appointed in 1997 and was integral in BALTIC's pre-launch period, having overseen the building of the gallery and witnessed the first one million visitors through the doors. After almost six years, Nordgren left to take up a new post as founding Director of the National Museum for Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo, Norway. He was briefly succeeded by Stephen Snoddy who was only with the organisation for one year. Snoddy was succeeded as Director by Peter Doroshenko in 2005, who approached the challenge with plans to increase visitor numbers and resolve the financial situation. Doroshenko organized several exhibitions during his time at the BALTIC, including Spank the Monkey. In November 2007, Doroshenko left the gallery to head up the Pinchuk Art Centre in Kiev, Ukraine. Since 2008, the director has been Godfrey Worsdale, founding director of the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art.
Gateshead is first mentioned in Latin translation in Bede'sEcclesiastical History of the English People as ad caput caprae 'at the goat's head'. This interpretation is consistent with the later English attestations of the name, among them Gatesheued (c. 1190), literally 'goat's head' but in the context of a place-name meaning 'headland or hill frequented by (wild) goats'. Although other derivations have been mooted, it is this that is given by the standard authorities.
The previous incarnation of the seat existed from 1832 to 1950. Among famous representatives are James Melville KC who was Solicitor General for England and Wales before he died, while holding the seat, and international statesman Konni Zilliacus who assisted in creating peaceful bilateral relations during the Cold War, including though work at the United Nations.

In deciding which petitions should be debated, it takes into account how many people have signed the petition, the topicality of the issue raised, whether the issue has recently been debated in Parliament, and the breadth of interest among MPs.
What will the petition debate achieve?
Debates on petitions in Westminster Hall are general debates about the issues raised by the petition.
MPs can discuss the petition and, if they wish, ask questions about the Government’s position on the issue or press the Government to take action.
A Government Minister takes part in the debate and answers the points raised.
These debates help to raise the profile of a campaign and could influence decision-making in Government and Parliament.
Petition debates in Westminster Hall cannot directly change the law or result in a vote to implement the request of the petition.
Creating new laws, or changing existing ones, can only be done through the parliamentary legislative process which involves a number of debates, and detailed consideration of the law in draft, in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
This process is normally started by the Government, although there are some ways in which individual MPs or members of the House of Lords who are not in the Government (known as "backbenchers") can ask Parliament to consider new laws.

Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art (also known simply as (the) Baltic, stylised as BALTIC) is a centre for contemporary art located on the south bank of the River Tyne in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England. It hosts a frequently changing variety of exhibitions, events, and educational programmes with no permanent exhibition. The idea to open a centre for contemporary arts in Gateshead was developed in the 1990s, which was a time of regeneration for the local area—the Sage and Gateshead Millennium Bridge was also being conceived of in this period.

The idea to open a centre for contemporary arts in Gateshead was developed in the 1990s, which was a time of regeneration for the local area—the Sage and Gateshead Millennium Bridge was also being conceived of in this period.

Join me for a walk around the captivating Tyneside town of Gateshead, located across the river from the famous city of Newcastle upon Tyne. Though often overlooked by those visiting Newcastle, Gateshead is full of history, home to a beautifully-regenerated quayside, and a town centre once ravaged by a devastating fire, but which houses a few intriguing stories and sights.
On our walk around Gateshead, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including the River Tyne, Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the old Baltic Flour Mills, Gateshead Quays, the Sage Gateshead, HMS Calliope, the Tyne Bridge, Hillgate, St. Mary's Church & Heritage Centre, The Central Pub, Gateshead Old Town Hall & Clock Tower, West Street, Sports Day Sculpture, Gateshead Interchange, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Jackson Street, former Gateshead Co-operative Buildings, The Tilley Stone Pub, The Metropole, St. Edmund's Church, High Street, the Grey Nag's Head Pub and Trinity Square.

Gateshead on one side of the River Tyne and Newcastle on the other. Maybe around the Country most people who have heard of Newcastle may not have heard of Gateshead. I might be wrong. Maybe the Angel of the North has put Gateshead more on the Map. This video takes a look back at How Gateshead used to be.

The UK General Election in 2024 uses the new electoral boundaries. Only 65 of the 650 seats are staying the same. Some seats are new, while some are abolished. In these videos we look at why boundaries are changing, a summary of the new constituency including demographics and geography, how the population of the new constituency is formed from the old seats. Then we get into the politics. We present the results for each of the constituencies in 2019, then look at the trends for the main seat that is being replaced. For the main seat, we look who won, who came second, and the majority. We look at the graph of the vote share for the last 4 elections. Then we list the final list of candidates and make a prediction for the 2024 winner based on predictions using an optimistic scenario and a bad day for the Conservatives.

On 4 March 2019, MPs debated a petition about funding for schools.

Read the House of Commons library briefing
https://researchbriefings.parliament.uk/ResearchBriefing/Summary/CBP-8419
The debate was opened by Liz Twist MP, a member of the Petitions Committee.
Why is this petition being debated?
The Petitions Committee has the power to schedule debates on e-petitions in the House of Commons Second Chamber, Westminster Hall.
Live coverage from the House of Commons where the prime minister, Keir Starmer, will face pressure from MPs to change his position and abolish the two-child benefit cap
