Abolitionism
Abolitionism is a movement to end slavery, whether formal or informal. In Western Europe and the Americas, abolitionism is a historical movement to end the African and Indian slave trade and set slaves free. King Charles I of Spain, usually known as Emperor Charles V, following the example of the Swedish monarch, passed a law which would have abolished colonial slavery in 1542, although this law was not passed in the largest colonial states, and so was not enforced. Later, in the late 18th century, English and American Quakers began to question the morality of slavery. James Oglethorpe was among the first to articulate the Enlightenment case against slavery, banning it in the Province of Georgia on humanist grounds, arguing against it in Parliament, and eventually encouraging his friends Granville Sharp and Hannah More to vigorously pursue the cause. Soon after his death in 1785, they joined with William Wilberforce and others in forming the Clapham Sect. The Somersett Case in 1772, which emancipated a slave in England, helped launch the British movement to abolish slavery. Though anti-slavery sentiments were widespread by the late 18th century, the colonies and emerging nations that used slave labour continued to do so: French, English and Portuguese territories in the West Indies; South America; and the Southern United States.

Slavery
Slavery is a legal or economic system in which principles of property law are applied to humans allowing them to be classified as property, to be owned, bought and sold accordingly, and they cannot withdraw unilaterally from the arrangement. While a person is a slave, the owner is entitled to the productivity of the slave's labour, without any remuneration. The rights and protection of the slave may be regulated by laws and customs in a particular time and place, and a person may become a slave from the time of their capture, purchase or birth.
Today, chattel slavery is unlawful in all countries, but a person may still be described as a slave if he or she is forced to work for another person without an ability on their part to unilaterally terminate the arrangement. Such situations are today commonly referred to as "practices similar to slavery". The present form of the slave trade is commonly referred to as human trafficking.
Slavery existed before written history and in many cultures. It was once institutionally recognized by most societies, but has now been outlawed in all countries, the last being Mauritania in 2007. However, it continues through such practices as debt bondage, serfdom, domestic servants kept in captivity, certain adoptions in which children are forced to work as slaves, child soldiers, human trafficking and forced marriage. Accordingly, there are more slaves today than at any time in history, with an estimated 20 million to 36 million slaves worldwide.

Slavery in the Ottoman Empire
Slavery in the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire was a legal and important part of the Ottoman Empire's economy and society until the slavery of Caucasians was banned in the early 19th century, although slaves from other groups were allowed. In Constantinople (present-day Istanbul), the administrative and political center of the Empire, about a fifth of the population consisted of slaves in 1609. Even after several measures to ban slavery in the late 19th century, the practice continued largely unabated into the early 20th century. As late as 1908, female slaves were still sold in the Ottoman Empire.Sexual slavery was a central part of the Ottoman slave system throughout the history of the institution.
A member of the Ottoman slave class, called a kul in Turkish, could achieve high status. Harem guards and janissaries are some of the better known positions a slave could hold, but slaves were actually often at the forefront of Ottoman politics. The majority of officials in the Ottoman government were bought slaves, raised free, and integral to the success of the Ottoman Empire from the 14th century into the 19th. Many officials themselves owned a large number of slaves, although the Sultan himself owned by far the largest amount. By raising and specially training slaves as officials in palace schools such as Enderun, the Ottomans created administrators with intricate knowledge of government and fanatic loyalty.

Columbus Neighborhoods: Abolitionism and the Civil War
The Worthington Anti-Slavery Society was formed in 1836. Its founders included Ansel Mattoon and Ozem Gardner. Their homes were two of several houses in Worthington that served as stations on the Underground Railroad. In helping escaped slaves reach freedom, Worthington’s abolitionists defied the federal fugitive slave law. They also apparently had little regard for Ohio’s black laws, which prohibited African-American children from attending white schools in the state.

The video series begins with an examination of the European age of discovery and the development of European colonies in the western hemisphere. The stage: the town of Alton in southern Illinois. The date of the act committed: the 7th of November, 1837. On that Tuesday, an angry mob murdered Elijah Lovejoy, the Presbyterian minister who was the founder of the Illinois State Anti-Slave Society.
Two days later, some 500 miles east in Hudson Ohio, a church congregation held a memorial service to honor the murdered activist. Owen Brown opened the gathering with a long, tearful prayer. At its conclusion, there was a long silence.
Then, in the back, Owen Brown’s son rose and, stiffly, raised his right hand, then vowed, “Here before God, in the presence of these witnesses, I consecrate my life to the destruction of slavery.” It was 37-year-old John Brown’s first public statement on the inflammatory issue and, as time would tell, his message and actions would be ominous.
And yet, on that Tuesday and in that service, this was John Brown of Hudson, Ohio. It would take time and events to fully create the John Brown of “Bleeding” Kansas and Harpers Ferry. From crusader to Old Testament avenging angel, this is his story.

The Worthington Anti-Slavery Society was formed in 1836. Its founders included Ansel Mattoon and Ozem Gardner. Their homes were two of several houses in Worthington that served as stations on the Underground Railroad.
In helping escaped slaves reach freedom, Worthington’s abolitionists defied the federal fugitive slave law. They also apparently had little regard for Ohio’s black laws, which prohibited African-American children from attending white schools in the state.

What Does the Bible Actually Say About Slavery?
One of the most common arguments against the Bible concerns its stance on "slavery." At first glance, the word "slavery" seems identical to our modern understanding, particularly the tragic results of the Atlantic slave trade. However, after some research, it becomes clear that the Bible is discussing two entirely different concepts. The type of slavery seen in the Atlantic Slave Trade is never endorsed by God. In fact, whenever something like that is mentioned, it is described as evil in the sight of God. God freed the Israelites out of slavery from Egypt. The Ottoman Empire spanned over 623 years and was renowned for its sultanate reigns and magnificent ancient architecture. However, one aspect that stood out was the concept of slavery that the Ottomans applied. Unlike other slaves in history, the Ottoman Empire slaves were white and subject to objectification, brutal tactics, and much worse. Although the Ottoman Empire followed Islamic beliefs which prohibited slavery, the rulers at that time created harsh circumstances for the slaves, more shocking than one might think.
White slavery in the Ottoman Empire was completely different from slavery in other empires. Unlike American slavery, it was practiced under strict rules and regulations of Islamic law. Slaves were considered property in the Ottoman Empire, and according to the Islamic holy book Quran, slaves should be treated gently with no distinction based on color or creed. The slaves were treated much more gently than other brutal masters, and most of the time, the master would even free their slaves to acquire tranquility of the soul.

Abolitionists argued passionately against the institution of slavery on moral, religious, and humanitarian grounds. They highlighted the brutal realities of slave life—separation of families, harsh working conditions, and systemic abuse—to sway public opinion against the practice. One prominent abolitionist was Frederick Douglass, a former slave who became a leading figure in the American abolitionist movement. Douglass eloquently spoke about his own experiences as a slave and tirelessly campaigned for the abolition of slavery through speeches, writings, and activism.
Transitioning to the challenges faced by abolitionists, we encounter significant opposition from those who benefited economically from slavery, as well as from those who held racist beliefs. Slave owners and their allies argued that slavery was essential for the economy and that slaves were inferior and unable to function as free citizens. These entrenched interests created formidable barriers to the abolitionist cause, leading to heated debates and, in some cases, violent confrontations.
Despite these challenges, abolitionists persisted in their efforts, forming organizations, writing pamphlets and newspapers, and engaging in legal and political battles. In Britain, for example, William Wilberforce and his allies in Parliament fought for decades to pass laws that eventually led to the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in 1807 and slavery itself throughout the British Empire in 1833.
In the United States, the abolitionist movement gained momentum over decades, culminating in the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. The war ultimately led to the abolition of slavery with the passage of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1865. This monumental achievement was the result of decades of struggle and sacrifice by abolitionists and the broader anti-slavery movement.

The stage: the town of Alton in southern Illinois. The date of the act committed: the 7th of November, 1837. On that Tuesday, an angry mob murdered Elijah Lovejoy, the Presbyterian minister who was the founder of the Illinois State Anti-Slave Society.
Two days later, some 500 miles east in Hudson Ohio, a church congregation held a memorial service to honor the murdered activist. Owen Brown opened the gathering with a long, tearful prayer. At its conclusion, there was a long silence.
Then, in the back, Owen Brown’s son rose and, stiffly, raised his right hand, then vowed, “Here before God, in the presence of these witnesses, I consecrate my life to the destruction of slavery.” It was 37-year-old John Brown’s first public statement on the inflammatory issue and, as time would tell, his message and actions would be ominous.
And yet, on that Tuesday and in that service, this was John Brown of Hudson, Ohio. It would take time and events to fully create the John Brown of “Bleeding” Kansas and Harpers Ferry. From crusader to Old Testament avenging angel, this is his story.

The Worthington Anti-Slavery Society was formed in 1836. Its founders included Ansel Mattoon and Ozem Gardner. Their homes were two of several houses in Worthington that served as stations on the Underground Railroad.
In helping escaped slaves reach freedom, Worthington’s abolitionists defied the federal fugitive slave law. They also apparently had little regard for Ohio’s black laws, which prohibited African-American children from attending white schools in the state.

Abolitionism
Abolitionism is a movement to end slavery, whether formal or informal. In Western Europe and the Americas, abolitionism is a historical movement to end the African and Indian slave trade and set slaves free. King Charles I of Spain, usually known as Emperor Charles V, following the example of the Swedish monarch, passed a law which would have abolished colonial slavery in 1542, although this law was not passed in the largest colonial states, and so was not enforced. Later, in the late 18th century, English and American Quakers began to question the morality of slavery. James Oglethorpe was among the first to articulate the Enlightenment case against slavery, banning it in the Province of Georgia on humanist grounds, arguing against it in Parliament, and eventually encouraging his friends Granville Sharp and Hannah More to vigorously pursue the cause. Soon after his death in 1785, they joined with William Wilberforce and others in forming the Clapham Sect. The Somersett Case in 1772, which emancipated a slave in England, helped launch the British movement to abolish slavery. Though anti-slavery sentiments were widespread by the late 18th century, the colonies and emerging nations that used slave labour continued to do so: French, English and Portuguese territories in the West Indies; South America; and the Southern United States.

John will talk about what life was like for an enslaved person in the 19th century United States, and how enslaved people resisted oppression, to the degree that was possible. We'll hear about cotton plantations, the violent punishment of enslaved people, the day-to-day lives of enslaved people, and slave rebellions. Nat Turner, Harriet Tubman, and Whipped Peter all make an appearance. Slavery as an institution is arguably the darkest part of America's history, and we're still dealing with its aftermath 150 years after it ended.

One of the most common arguments against the Bible concerns its stance on "slavery." At first glance, the word "slavery" seems identical to our modern understanding, particularly the tragic results of the Atlantic slave trade. However, after some research, it becomes clear that the Bible is discussing two entirely different concepts. The type of slavery seen in the Atlantic Slave Trade is never endorsed by God. In fact, whenever something like that is mentioned, it is described as evil in the sight of God. God freed the Israelites out of slavery from Egypt. The Ottoman Empire spanned over 623 years and was renowned for its sultanate reigns and magnificent ancient architecture. However, one aspect that stood out was the concept of slavery that the Ottomans applied. Unlike other slaves in history, the Ottoman Empire slaves were white and subject to objectification, brutal tactics, and much worse. Although the Ottoman Empire followed Islamic beliefs which prohibited slavery, the rulers at that time created harsh circumstances for the slaves, more shocking than one might think.
White slavery in the Ottoman Empire was completely different from slavery in other empires. Unlike American slavery, it was practiced under strict rules and regulations of Islamic law. Slaves were considered property in the Ottoman Empire, and according to the Islamic holy book Quran, slaves should be treated gently with no distinction based on color or creed. The slaves were treated much more gently than other brutal masters, and most of the time, the master would even free their slaves to acquire tranquility of the soul.
