William Seward Burroughs II (/ˈbʌroʊz/; also known by his pen name William Lee; February 5, 1914 – August 2, 1997) was an American novelist, short story writer, satirist, essayist, painter, and spoken word performer. A primary figure of the Beat Generation and a major postmodernist author who wrote in the paranoid fiction genre, he is considered to be "one of the most politically trenchant, culturally influential, and innovative artists of the 20th century". His influence is considered to have affected a range of popular culture as well as literature. Burroughs wrote eighteen novels and novellas, six collections of short stories and four collections of essays. Five books have been published of his interviews and correspondences. He also collaborated on projects and recordings with numerous performers and musicians, and made many appearances in films.
He was born into a wealthy family in St. Louis, Missouri, grandson of the inventor and founder of the Burroughs Corporation, William Seward Burroughs I, and nephew of public relations manager Ivy Lee. Burroughs began writing essays and journals in early adolescence, but did not begin publicizing his writing until his thirties. He left home in 1932 to attend Harvard University, studied English, and anthropology as a postgraduate, and later attended medical school in Vienna. In 1942 Burroughs enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve during World War II, but was turned down by the Office of Strategic Services and Navy, after which he picked up the drug addiction that affected him for the rest of his life, while working a variety of jobs. In 1943 while living in New York City, he befriended Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, the mutually influential foundation of which grew into the Beat Generation, which was later a defining influence on the 1960s counterculture.
A Different World is an American television sitcom which aired for six seasons on NBC from September 24, 1987 – July 9, 1993. It is a spin-off series from The Cosby Show and originally centered on Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) and the life of students at Hillman College, a fictional historically black college in the state of Virginia, inspired by student life at Howard University. After Bonet's departure in the first season, the remainder of the series primarily focused more on Southern belle Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy) and mathematics whiz Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison).
While it was a spin-off from The Cosby Show, A Different World typically addressed issues that were avoided by The Cosby Show writers (race and class relations, or the Equal Rights Amendment). One episode that aired in 1990 was one of the first American network television episodes to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The original premise was to have a white student there and have Lena Horne as an acting teacher, but in production, the premise changed from being a story about a white girl in a black college to a black girl (Denise Huxtable) in a black college with a white friend. It was ultimately decided that Denise, who was of college age, would be spun off and have a white roommate in order to show the dynamic of a white girl in predominantly-black surroundings.Meg Ryan was originally cast for this role, but she decided to pursue a film career, so Marisa Tomei was cast. The first season of Hillman's student body consisted of both black and white students, but this was changed at the beginning of the second season and a very predominantly-black student body maintained until the series ended.
"A Different World" is the title of a debut song recorded by American country music artist Bucky Covington. It was released in January 2007 as the lead single from his album Bucky Covington. It was written by Jennifer Hanson, Tony Martin, and Mark Nesler. The song is produced by Mark Miller of Sawyer Brown, and was released by Lyric Street Records, a country label of Disney's Buena Vista Music Group. It peaked at number 6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
The song is a reminiscence of the narrator's formative years, its lyrics describing how much the world has changed since his childhood. Examples abound of how mothers "smoked and drank" during pregnancy, lead-based paint was available, children drank water out of garden hoses and rode bicycles without helmets or other safety equipment, parents physically disciplined their children when they misbehaved, towns had only one youth baseball team (per age group) and would-be players didn't always make the team ... and so on.
A Different World is a television spin-off of The Cosby Show set at Hillman College, the alma mater of Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable. It ran for six seasons on NBC, airing a total of 142 episodes, including three hour-long episodes. The last three episodes aired in syndication, bringing the total to 145.

YOU KNOW, TOM, YOU TOLD ME A LOT OF THE OLD-TIME STORIES... ABOUT HOW YOU USED TO... STICK YOUR ARM IN BETWEEN THE BARS OF THE CELL. THE GUARD WOULD COME BY, AND HE'D FIRE YOU UP A SHOT OF MORPHINE. WELL, THEY NEVER DID THAT FOR ME. WELL, THEY DON'T DO THAT FOR ANYONE ANYMORE. NARCOTICS HAVE BEEN... SYSTEMATICALLY SCAPEGOATED... AND DEMONIZED. THE IDEA THAT ANYONE CAN USE DRUGS AND ESCAPE A HORRIBLE FATE... IS ANATHEMA TO THESE IDIOTS. I PREDICT, IN THE NEAR FUTURE, RIGHT-WINGERS WILL USE DRUG HYSTERIA... AS A PRETEXT... TO SET UP AN INTERNATIONAL POLICE APPARATUS. BUT I'M AN OLD MAN, AND I MAY NOT LIVE... TO SEE A FINAL SOLUTION OF THE DRUG PROBLEM.

Step inside ‘The Bunker’ in New York, the windowless former apartment of the legendary writer William S. Burroughs, and let yourself be guided around – from Burroughs’ typewriter to his shooting target – by its the current resident, the iconic poet John Giorno (b.1936 - d.2019). William S. Burroughs lived several places throughout his life. Between 1975-82 the drug addict and writer –famous not least for his automatic writing in books like ‘Naked Lunch’– lived in 222 Bowery, one of New York’s first YMCAs in the 1880s. Performance poet John Giorno has lived at the address since the early 1960s and was delighted to host his friend and colleague, who lived in the basement for seven years and dubbed the windowless space ‘The Bunker’. “He was a brilliant transcendent writer, but he was more b...

At school he always had to hide
His feelings buried deep inside
A poker face, his features froze
At 12 he looked like William Burroughs
He talked but never moved his lips
Made love but never used his hips
His skin unused fell to decay
From fleshy pink to ashen grey
It's enough to crack a smile
It's enough to make you blind
It's enough to make you live your life backwards
It's enough to drive you out of your mind
And he became a figurehead
A 3-D sign that might be dead
And no one knew his state of mind
He fell into the great divide
It's enough to crack a smile
It's enough to leave you blind
At school he always had to hide
His feelings buried deep inside
A poker face, his features froze
At 12 he looked like William Burroughs
