Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater: Inside the House That Forever Changed Architecture

Inside The Home Frank Lloyd Wright Designed For His Son | Unique Spaces | Architectural Digest
Today, AD travels to Phoenix, Arizona, to tour the David and Gladys Wright house—the home designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright for his son. When your father is America’s most celebrated architect, the greatest gift he could give you is a house, and this unique home uses many of the same ideas Lloyd Wright incorporated in the design of the Guggenheim Museum. The spiral structures, often symbolizing the infinite or longevity, are poetic, as David and his wife Gladys lived to be over 100 years old in this house. After many years of neglect and threats of demolition, father-and-daughter duo Bing and Amanda Hu bought the house and have since been on a mission to restore it to its former glory, keeping its legacy alive.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian homes included many distinctive features, from the brick and cedar materials to the open floor plan. But one of the most distinctive features might be the windows — which reflected his broader philosophy of natural light.
As the above video shows, Wright considered natural light an important part of the house that deserved highlighting, both in the windows used and in the way the rest of the house showcased that light. The Pope-Leighey house in Alexandria, Virginia, is a particularly good showcase of the way these windows made natural light an integral part of the home.

Wright divulges two of his earliest influences, one logical (Louis Sullivan) and the other somewhat surprising (his mother). The house in Oak Park is shown and discussed, as is the Fallingwater house and Wright’s homes—Taliesin in Wisconsin and Taliesin West in California. A rural church that Wright designed is discussed as are interiors and exteriors of the Johnson Factory Building. Exploring his public persona, the architect makes no apology for choosing honest arrogance over hypocritical humility. He claims his greatest achievement will always be his next design.

From a young boy playing with blocks to becoming one of the most revered architects in history, Frank Lloyd Wright's journey is one of creativity, opportunity, and adaptability. Early experiences with geometric patterns and design principles laid the groundwork for an incredible career, challenging the notion that his skills were merely innate rather than cultivated through experiences and serendipitous opportunities.
This video traces the career of Frank Lloyd Wright in an attempt to dispel the traditional narrative that he was simply a singular genius. Rather, his ability to leverage economic and social shifts, especially in architectural practices, set him apart and propelled him into the cultural figure we know today.

__Description__

Note from Frank: "This is my version of the original arrangement of the Bach Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Nady Zolc. I have reinstated some of the original notation and changed some if the articulation to suit my own strengths, but kept the F minor transposed key of course. Enjoy!"
