Cuba had a number of communist and anarchist organizations from the early period of the Republic (founded in 1902). The original "internationalised" Communist Party of Cuba formed in the 1920s. In 1944 it renamed itself as the Popular Socialist Party for electoral reasons. In July 1961, two years after the successful overthrow of Batista and the creation of a revolutionary government, the Integrated Revolutionary Organizations (ORI) was formed from the merger of:
The Popular Socialist Party (Spanish:Partido Socialista Popular, PSP) was a communist party in Cuba. Originally called the Communist Party of Cuba (Spanish:Partido Comunista de Cuba), it was formed in the 1925 by a group including Blas Roca, Anibal Escalante, Fabio Grobart, Alfonso Bernal del Riesgo and Julio Antonio Mella, who acted as its leader until his assassination in Mexico in 1929. It was later renamed the "Communist Revolutionary Union". The party supported Gerardo Machado and Fulgencio Batista, joining his first government in 1940 with one minister without portfolio, and was initially critical of Fidel Castro. After the electoral victory of the Partido Auténtico in the 1944 elections, the party went into decline, and eventually adopted the name "Popular Socialist Party" for electoral reasons.
The Party hadn't convened since 1997, when Cuba's economy was undergoing a severe depression, known as the Special Period. Nevertheless, no significant economic reforms emerged during the Fifth Congress. The 6th Congress had been scheduled for 2009, but was postponed due to the global economic crisis. On November 9, 2010 the Draft Guidelines of the Economic and Social Policy of the Party and the Revolution were released, followed by a period of public discussions and consultations between December 1, 2010 to February 28, 2011. According to the Cuban government, 8.9 million people were involved in this phase, resulting in changes to 68% of the guidelines and increasing their number from 291 to 311.

Raul Castro has announced his resignation as head of Cuba's ruling Communist Party - putting an end to six decades of rule in the country by members of the Castro family. Raul, who took over as president from his brother Fidel in 2008, has said he is passing leadership to a new generation.
The news drew a mixed reaction on Cuba's streets.

After Fidel fell ill in 2006, Raul became the face of Communist Cuba.
The country's top position will be now filled by Miguel Diaz-Canel who has served as Cuba's president for the past three years. He is a party loyalist who has advocated reform of the ailing economy - without altering Cuba's one-party system.
Cuba's ongoing economic crisis presents a stiff challenge for the new leadership.
Last year, the economy shrank by 11 percent on the heels of new US sanctions - The coronavirus pandemic and domestic mismanagement have only compounded the hardships of daily life on the island.
But even though he's stepping down as party leader, Castro said he wasn't going anywhere.

Big response as Castro reinstates socialist parade
Hundreds of thousands of Cubans took to the streets of Havana on
Wednesday (1/5), brandishing red flags and huge portraits of
revolutionary figures. President Fidel Castro had cancelled the
last two May Day parades to save money, but this time he had
called upon a million of his people to turn out to celebrate and
prove to the world that socialism is stronger than ever on the
island. Pedro Ross, head of Cuba's labour movement, kicked off the
day's events with a rousing call of "Socialism or death!
Fatherland or death." Loudspeakers blasted out patriotic music as

Big response as Castro reinstates socialist parade
Hundreds of thousands of Cubans took to the streets of Havana on
Wednesday (1/5), brandishing red flags and huge portraits of
revolutionary figures. President Fidel Castro had cancelled the
last two May Day parades to save money, but this time he had
called upon a million of his people to turn out to celebrate and
prove to the world that socialism is stronger than ever on the
island. Pedro Ross, head of Cuba's labour movement, kicked off the
day's events with a rousing call of "Socialism or death!
Fatherland or death." Loudspeakers blasted out patriotic music as
marchers filed past a silent 70-year-old Castro, who watched from
a stand at the Plaza of the Revolucion. The Cuban leader had made
a three-hour speech the night before, urging people to show their
commitment to socialism. The demonstration of support was widely
seen as a rebuff to the USA's Helms-Burton Act, Washington's
latest batch of trade sanctions, which include punitive threats
against any nation trading with Cuba.

Cuba celebrated the 65th Anniversary of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution with a ceremony in its second-largest city of Santiago de Cuba on Monday.
The celebration was held at Santiago de Cuba's Cespedes Park, gathering national leaders, representatives from across the country and citizens in the city.
Among those present at the ceremony were Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and Cuban president, Cuban revolutionary leader Raul Castro, Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, and Esteban Lazo Hernandez, president of Cuba's National Assembly of People's Power.
Diaz-Canel said at the ceremony that Cuba will go all out to broke the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States, which has caused a total loss of nearly 160 billion U.S. dollars in over 60 years.
"We will tirelessly press for the lifting of the embargo and an end to the economic war. If they (the United States) do not lift the embargo, Cuba will definitely find a way to solve it. This country has enough dignity, talent and determination to rely on ourselves to break through the siege for our salvation," Diaz-Canel said.
On Jan. 1, 1959, the revolutionary army led by Fidel Castro captured the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba and the central city of Santa Clara, forcing military dictator Fulgencio Batista to flee to the Dominican Republic.
The events marked the triumph of the revolution and the beginning of social and economic reforms that led to the establishment of socialism on the Caribbean island.

Fidel Castro has stepped down as head of Cuba's Communist Party.
The move comes as the party holds a key congress to plot the country's future.
President Raul Castro said he has presented some 300 reforms in an attempt to end Cuba's economic crisis by correcting past policy mistakes. The reforms aim to boost the Caribbean island's state-dominated, debt ridden, unproductive economy.

Dark suit but no tie, Raul Castro kicked off the 7th Congress of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC) in Havana on April 16, with accentuation on economic issues and personnel arrangement.
(Soundbite) Raul Castro, PCC First Secretary and Cuban President
“The neo-liberal formulas and internal voices in the country that demand privatization of state property and social services like health, education and social security will never be applied in Cuba’s socialism.”
Raul stressed that social justice will be upheld, while the island country continues its process of economic reforms to update its socialist system.
He said that many economic and social changes have taken place since the last congress five years ago and a lot more remains to be done in the future under new leadership.
(Soundbite) Raul Castro, Party Secretary General
“For me, as it is not a secret, in 2018 my second term as President of the Council of State and Ministers will come to an end. I will hand over that responsibility to whoever is elected.”
Meanwhile, Raul clarified the dual monetary system as a main obstacle to more economic reforms, emphasized the importance of over half a million workers in the private sector, and called for constitutional reforms to limit terms of high-ranking officials.

http://www.euronews.net/ The Cuban president has re-affirmed the communist island's commitment to a one-party political system, dashing any faint hopes dissidents may have had of fundamental democratic reform.
At a communist conference in Havana Raul Castro said allowing more than one party would open the door to US interference.
"We defend the one-party system over the game of demagogy and the commercialisation of politics," he told delegates.
Castro did, however, announce the government would push ahead with changes to limit the terms of office of Cuba's top leaders.
Cuba's Communist Party is meeting in Havana for its first National Conference, and getting young people involved in the affairs of the nation will be high on the agenda.
Many say they would like to see new faces in government, stressing the need for generational change in a country where the top leadership is about 80 years old.
Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo reports from Havana.
Raul Castro steps down as head of Cuba's Communist Party | DW News
Raul Castro has announced his resignation as head of Cuba's ruling Communist Party - putting an end to six decades of rule in the country by members of the Castro family. Raul, who took over as president from his brother Fidel in 2008, has said he is passing leadership to a new generation.
The news drew a mixed reaction on Cuba's streets.
Raúl Castro has played most of his life second-string to his brother Fidel - first as a guerrilla commander, later as a senior figure in the socialist government.

The Cuban Socialist Party (Spanish: Partido Socialista Cubano) was a political party in Cuba. The party was founded in March 1899 by Diego Vicente Tejera. The founding of the Socialist Party represented the first attempt in Cuban history to build a political party representing the working class. The activities of the party were limited to the city of Havana. The party was dissolved in July 1899, and Tejera joined the Cuban National Party.
