The Venice Film Festival or Venice International Film Festival (Italian:Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica della Biennale di Venezia, "International Exhibition of Cinematographic Art of the Venice Biennale"), founded in 1932, is the oldest film festival in the world and one of the "Big Three" film festivals alongside the Cannes Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival.
The film festival is part of the Venice Biennale, which was founded by the Venetian City Council in 1895. Today, the Biennale includes a range of separate events including: the International Art Exhibition; the International Festival of Contemporary Music; the International Theatre Festival; the International Architecture Exhibition; the International Festival of Contemporary Dance; the International Kids’ Carnival; and the annual Venice Film Festival, which is arguably the best-known of all the events.
The film festival has since taken place in late August or early September on the island of the Lido, Venice, Italy. Screenings take place in the historic Palazzo del Cinema on the Lungomare Marconi and in other venues nearby. Since its inception the Film Festival has become the most prestigious international film festival in the world.
Venice (English /ˈvɛnɪs/VEN-iss; Italian:Venezia[veˈnɛttsja]) is a city in northeastern Italy sited on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. It is located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline, between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. Venice is renowned for the beauty of its setting, its architecture, and its artwork. The city in its entirety is listed as a World Heritage Site, along with its lagoon.
Venice is the capital of the Venetoregion. In 2009, there were 270,098 people residing in Venice's comune (the population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; of whom around 60,000 live in the historic city of Venice (Centro storico); 176,000 in Terraferma (the mainland), mostly in the large frazioni (roughly equivalent to "parishes" or "wards" in other countries) of Mestre and Marghera; and 31,000 on other islands in the lagoon). Together with Padua and Treviso, the city is included in the Padua-Treviso-Venice Metropolitan Area (PATREVE), with a total population of 2,600,000. PATREVE is only a statistical metropolitan area without any degree of autonomy.
The 44th annual Venice International Film Festival was held from 29 August to 9 September 1987.

THE 44TH ANNUAL MOSCOW INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL OPENS AMID CONTROVERSY
The 44th International Moscow Film Festival opened on Friday (26 AUGUST 2022) amid the special operation in Ukraine with most potential western participants boycotting the event.
Despite the controversy surrounding the festival, the organizers say it attracted three times as many guests as the previous gathering with 230 films from 65 countries being shown.
Asked about what kind of a hero is viable in modern cinema, the MIFF president Nikita Mikhalkov replied that "these days, the heroes are in Donbas", adding that "a new world and a new society are being born there."

"These days, the heroes are in Donbas. That is where the new elite and the new heroes are being born. Actually, a new world and a new society are being born there. The problem is that unfortunately not everybody understands that this is serious and it's here to stay."

4. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Nikita Mikhalkov, MIFF president:
"To me, from a certain moment - especially from the moment they started trying to cancel our culture in the world, including Tchaikovsky and Pushkin - it makes no difference how big are the stars that come. I'm interested in people who come because they are interested in meeting us, showing their movies, seeing other movies. And I think that generally this is the basis for a real film festival."
