Over time, the division's organization and equipment evolved to adapt to the changing nature of warfare during World War II. As the war progressed, the U.S. Army recognized the need for more heavily armed and armored tanks, and the 1st Armored Division transitioned to using medium and heavy tanks in addition to its light tank assets.
This transition in equipment and organization allowed the division to effectively adapt to the different theaters of operation and combat scenarios it encountered during the war, from North Africa to Italy, France, and Germany. The division's flexibility and ability to adapt to evolving military requirements contributed to its success in World War II.
