World's largest cities
Determining the world's largest cities depends on which definitions of city are used. The United Nations uses three definitions for what constitutes a city, as not all cities may be classified using the same criteria. Cities may be defined by the extent of their urban area, the metropolitan region, and the city proper.
Common methods for defining the boundaries of a city
Urban areas
A city can be defined as a conditionally contiguous urban area, without regard to territorial or other boundaries inside an urban area. UNICEF defines urban area as follows:
Metropolitan area
A city can be defined by the habits of its demographic population, as by metropolitan area, labour market area, or similar in a metropolitan area. UNICEF defines metropolitan area as follows:
City proper (administrative)
A city can be defined by its administrative boundaries (city proper). World Urbanization Prospects, a UN publication, defines population of a city proper as "the population living within the administrative boundaries of a city or controlled directly from the city by a single authority." UNICEF defines city proper as "the population living within the administrative boundaries of a city, e.g., Washington, D.C.". A city proper is a locality defined according to legal or political boundaries and an administratively recognised urban status that is usually characterised by some form of local government. Cities proper and their boundaries and population data may not include suburbs.

The World (film)
The World (Chinese: 世界; pinyin: Shìjiè) is a 2004 Chinese film written and directed by Jia Zhangke. Starring Jia's muse, Zhao Tao, as well as Chen Taisheng, The World was filmed on and around an actual theme park located in Beijing, Beijing World Park, which recreates world landmarks at reduced scales for Chinese tourists. The World was Jia's first to gain official approval from the Chinese government. Additionally, it was the first of his films to take place outside of his home province of Shanxi.
The World was a joint-production by Jia Zhangke's own Xstream Pictures, Japan's Office Kitano, and France's Lumen Films. It received additional financial support from the Shanghai Film Studio and several Japanese corporations including Bandai Visual and Tokyo FM, among others.
The film premiered in competition at the 2004 Venice Film Festival on September 4, 2004, but failed to win the coveted Golden Lion, the festival's top award, which ultimately went to Mike Leigh's drama Vera Drake, but which Jia would win two years later with Still Life. The World also premiered in 2004 at the New York Film Festival and would go on to receive a limited release in New York City the following year on July 1, 2005.

PRI's The World is a global news radio, audio and multi-platform program created by Public Radio International based on the program's congruence with PRI's mission, and in order to fulfill the critical need for more original global news created for and provided to Americans. This was partly a response to declining investments by commercial media in international news. The program is co-produced by the BBC World Service of the United Kingdom, and Public Radio International and WGBH of the United States. The program's goal is to bring international journalism/news that illuminates the world specifically for US listeners.
The World was PRI's first co-production—the company now has a number of productions. It was also the first news co-production of the BBC World Service. For the BBC, The World was conceived as stand-alone program and also as a template for future co-productions which might serve to expand the reach of BBC World Service resources. At its launch, it was the first program dedicated to focusing on providing global news and making the global-local connection for Americans on a daily basis.

World is a pavement artwork created by the Canadian-born architect and artist Mark Pimlott, installed outside Broadcasting House in London, United Kingdom. According to the BBC, the work "reflects the global dimension of the BBC’s broadcasting and consists of over 750 stone flags inscribed with place names from around the world, as well as those from history, mythology and fantasy. The artwork is enhanced by elegant steel lines of longitude and latitude, a subtle scheme of small embedded lights and some audio installation linked to key output from the World Service."

"World" is a song from the Bee Gees' fourth album Horizontal, released in 1967 in the United Kingdom. Though it was a big hit in Europe, Atco Records did not issue it as a single in the United States, having just issued a third single from Bee Gees' 1st, "Holiday".
Composition
The song's lyrics question the singer's purpose in life.
Recording
The song's first recording session was on 3 October 1967 along with "With the Sun in My Eyes" and "Words". The song's last recording session was on 28 October 1967. "World" was originally planned as having no orchestra, so all four tracks were filled with the band, including some mellotron or organ played by Robin. When it was decided to add an orchestra, the four tracks containing the band were mixed to one track and the orchestra was added to the other track. The stereo mix suffered since the second tape had to play as mono until the end when the orchestra comes in on one side. Barry adds: "'World' is one of those things we came up with in the studio, Everyone just having fun and saying, 'Let's just do something!' you know". Vince Melouney recalls: "I had this idea to play the melody right up in the top register of the guitar behind the chorus".

This video will compare the largest cities in the world from years 1400 to 2023. Technically, there is data starting from 1 AD, and I could have started there, but the data was sparse in those early years, and it would have required an inappropriate amount of data extrapolation. Therefore, the video begins by showcasing the population data for the individual years of 1, 700, 900, and 1100, skipping past the years in between that had sparse data. Anyways, this video aligns the cities with the corresponding country or empire during each year, so you can get a feel for the flags of different empires and the historical control of each city by various countries throughout history, which is more interesting! It was founded in 1554 by Jesuits and nowadays is considered as the most multiethnic city in Brazil. Between 1878 and 2010 it received more than 2.3 million immigrants, a lot of them were from Italy, reason why 60% of people from Sao Paulo has a close or distant family from this country.
-Jakarta
This city was the Indonesia’s capital and the most important on that country. In 1919 it was conquered by the Dutch who baptized it as Batavia and converted it in is colony’s capital, Dutch East Indies.
-Delhi
Most of the population speaks Hindi but also speaks English, this because the new government’s educational policy.
-Manila
It was an important open commerce dock until 1571, year where the Spanish took this city and forced it to only trade with Spain. Since then, it’s the main Philippines’ Catholic center and has the most Spanish speakers in the country.

More than half of the world's population – 55% – lives in cities. By 2050, that figure is predicted to jump to 68%, according to the United Nations. Recently, the world hit the eight billion population mark. The world's population is growing, but what is the biggest city in the world?
After the global population hit eight billion, various predictions have been made about when the number of people on Earth will peak. Studies vary, with some suggesting that world population will peak at 8.8 billion people by the middle of this century, before it starts to decline. Other predictions, such as those made by the United Nations, estimate that the world's population could hit more than 10 billion by the 2080s.
In any case, the substantial increase in population has led to significant congestion in several of the world’s largest cities, giving rise to major concerns regarding pollution and overcrowding.

This video will compare the largest cities in the world from years 1400 to 2023.
Technically, there is data starting from 1 AD, and I could have started there, but the data was sparse in those early years, and it would have required an inappropriate amount of data extrapolation.
Therefore, the video begins by showcasing the population data for the individual years of 1, 700, 900, and 1100, skipping past the years in between that had sparse data.
Anyways, this video aligns the cities with the corresponding country or empire during each year, so you can get a feel for the flags of different empires and the historical control of each city by various countries throughout history, which is more interesting!

These are the biggest cities in the world. Super populated cities with large areas. New York, Tokyo, Shanghai... Which one is the biggest?
-Tokyo
It was founded in the XV century under the name Edo and in 1868 it was converted in the capital of the country when the emperor left his reticence in Kyoto and established to this city, after this it was called Tokyo.
-New York
It was founded as a Dutch colony in 1624 and had the name of New Amsterdam, but after the English conquered them, they changed its name to New York.
The city was the United State’s capital until 1790. During the XIX and XX centuries, it received a lot of African migrants that left the southern places.
-Beijing
Its history comes from years ago, when it was named the Chinese capital during the Kublain Khan Kingdom, who was from Mongolia and decided to locate near that country. Also, Beijing was surrounded by big mountains, which made its defense easy. Its importance brought new residents and between the XV and XIX centuries
-Seoul
It has a Gross Domestic Product of 773 900 million dollars, one place behind Tokyo, New York and Los Angeles. According to the United Nations, the average life quality is superior to any big city like London and Melbourne.
-Shanghai
It’s the biggest Chinese urban area but, curiously, most of the people don’t speak mandarin but Shanghainese.
Its name means “upon the sea”, which is logic because it’s placed in the Yangtze river’s delta.
-Mumbai
In 1661, the English controlled the city and in the XIX century, they built roads that connected the islands with ground, converting Mumbai in a peninsula. Nowadays, 200 tongues are spoken on the street of this city.
-Sao Paulo
It was founded in 1554 by Jesuits and nowadays is considered as the most multiethnic city in Brazil. Between 1878 and 2010 it received more than 2.3 million immigrants, a lot of them were from Italy, reason why 60% of people from Sao Paulo has a close or distant family from this country.
-Jakarta
This city was the Indonesia’s capital and the most important on that country. In 1919 it was conquered by the Dutch who baptized it as Batavia and converted it in is colony’s capital, Dutch East Indies.
-Delhi
Most of the population speaks Hindi but also speaks English, this because the new government’s educational policy.
-Manila
It was an important open commerce dock until 1571, year where the Spanish took this city and forced it to only trade with Spain. Since then, it’s the main Philippines’ Catholic center and has the most Spanish speakers in the country.

This video will compare the largest cities in the world from years 1400 to 2023.
Technically, there is data starting from 1 AD, and I could have started there, but the data was sparse in those early years, and it would have required an inappropriate amount of data extrapolation.
Therefore, the video begins by showcasing the population data for the individual years of 1, 700, 900, and 1100, skipping past the years in between that had sparse data.
Anyways, this video aligns the cities with the corresponding country or empire during each year, so you can get a feel for the flags of different empires and the historical control of each city by various countries throughout history, which is more interesting!

World's largest cities
Determining the world's largest cities depends on which definitions of city are used. The United Nations uses three definitions for what constitutes a city, as not all cities may be classified using the same criteria. Cities may be defined by the extent of their urban area, the metropolitan region, and the city proper.
Common methods for defining the boundaries of a city
Urban areas
A city can be defined as a conditionally contiguous urban area, without regard to territorial or other boundaries inside an urban area. UNICEF defines urban area as follows:
Metropolitan area
A city can be defined by the habits of its demographic population, as by metropolitan area, labour market area, or similar in a metropolitan area. UNICEF defines metropolitan area as follows:
City proper (administrative)
A city can be defined by its administrative boundaries (city proper). World Urbanization Prospects, a UN publication, defines population of a city proper as "the population living within the administrative boundaries of a city or controlled directly from the city by a single authority." UNICEF defines city proper as "the population living within the administrative boundaries of a city, e.g., Washington, D.C.". A city proper is a locality defined according to legal or political boundaries and an administratively recognised urban status that is usually characterised by some form of local government. Cities proper and their boundaries and population data may not include suburbs.
