GCatholic.org is an nonprofit organization the provides comprehensive information about the Catholic Church[2][3][4] via its online database of bishops and dioceses of the Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Catholic Churches. The website is not officially sanctioned by the Church. It is run as a private project by Gabriel Chow, journalist for Salt + Light Television, in Toronto. It also provides information about the performance of the Catholic Church itself in different countries and territories and provides biographical information on current and former bishops of each diocese, such as dates of birth, ordination, and (where applicable) death. When created, the site name was Giga-Catholic Information due to the fact that there are around 1 billion Catholics in the world (billion = giga).[5] It is used as a source for information on Catholic bishops and diocese, current and historical, by various news organizations[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] and authors.

Excessive citations to population boxes?

Hi, Patapsco. I notice you're adding many citations to population boxes for places around California. While giving references for the data in the boxes is good, it looks like you've been adding citations to old census records that aren't even used in the boxes. For example, in Twin Lakes, Mono County, California, you cited census data going all the way back to 1870, but there is only data for 2020 (when the CDP was created).

Would it be possible to only give citations for data that appears in the box, rather than all possible old census citations? Thanks very much! — hike395 (talk) 05:15, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello User talk:Hike395. Just wondering then. How can I make a statement that the entity has not appeared in prior censuses unless I include the prior censuses? In the past, I have had people removing my statement since they say it is unsupported. So I started adding the prior censuses so people can confirm what I am saying. California is the first state where people have objected (probably my fault since I added the information prior to updating the CDP for ease of updating; and the process is slower as CDPs seem to have been somewhat neglected in Caly...heck there is not even a full list of CDPs...just the largest). I guess I could put a direct statement in there that "xxxx has not appeared in a census until it was listed as a a xxxx in xxxx census" and add the citations but it seemed more appropriate to keep them in the population box. They way I have been working is to keep all the census PDFs open and make sure the name has not appeared in the past; and then add when it first appeared. cheers!Patapsco913 (talk) 07:31, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
When a piece of data is not in Wikipedia, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. That just means it hasn't been added yet. You don't have to prove that the 1870 data for Twin Falls doesn't exist. Another editor has to prove that if they add it, it can be verified.
Similarly, I don't think it is possible to cite to a negative claim. Just because a piece of data isn't in a citation, that doesn't prove that it doesn't exist. Again, I don't think you need to prove that data doesn't exist. But even if you did feel that, you would need to find a reliable source that states that it doesn't exist, rather than trying to cite to all possible primary sources which don't have the data.

Hmmm. I get your point but you are applying it very broadly and not specifically to census data. I am not adding 'all' the sources that say it is not listed in the census; rather I am just adding those few additional references from the US Census where it would have been listed ( where a necessary check would have to be done to be thorough when cleaning up the census portion of the page) and allow anyone to easily verify as much. Look at Moorpark, California#Demographics. I know that it is listed as an unincorporated place in the 1950 U.S. Census, but it is not listed here. Nobody has bothered to check since they likely think the list is definitive (and look at the laughable citation provided https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/decennial-census.html - basically impossible for the average editor to verify). So it lingers as unverified or gets deleted by an editor). The other problem is that California will be different from other state projects where the data is included. My main point is you don't need to cite the absence of data in Wikipedia. Think about all of the data for infoboxes across WP! It would be an incredible burden to make a citation for all of the blank fields.
